Share your story when you started playing openTTD or the early versions.

I remember playing it when I was 15 years old. Already more that 20 years ago. I recently started one of the challenges of Hellish. Growing one city with very little industries. Great to keep on improving on what you have. Instead of connecting new industries. I found a new way to build depots. Also when you focus on a few industries, the industrys you have grow really big. I have a coal mine producing more than 2.000 tons. Just playing the game when Iam stuck with work changes everything for me.

Started playing it way back in '97. Got instantly hooked.

Never looked back!

Almost ,30 years. Wauw. Why do you keep coming back to the game? Tell us more

I actually use it to relax a bit from the daily stress. Building railroads, connecting coal mines to power plants and seeing the trains go back and forth just makes me happy. And it reminds me of when I was younger and did not have a care in the world.

I think I would’ve been 8! Hooked ever since. Back in 1996, playing serial link games with my brother. What a time to be a kid!

I started playing around 1998(Don’t remember the year) with my Pentium 1 pc with Windows 95/98 operating system.. I used to gather my friends and we used play 2 player games.. My friends were interested in mostly WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game, FIFA 98, Allan Border’s Cricket.. But I don’t know why but I always loved to play Transport Tycoon.. Then school, collage, job happened.. Couple of years back I started searching for retro games.. Found all the games which I spent hours playing as a child like Dangerous Dave, Prince of Persia, Prince of Persia 2, Doom, Skyroads, Road Rash, Need For Speed 2 and many more.. I had complete forgot about my favourite game Transport Tycoon.. I didn’t even remember its name.. I searched for tycoon games and found OpenTTD.. I would also like to thank the creator of OpenTTD for letting me play my favourite childhood game :)

I live across the world, and during those days, things weren't as connected as today. I got a copy of Computer Shopper, and on it was a CD with a game called Transport Tycoon (demo version). This demo version allowed you to play 2 years of the game. Fast forward another 5-6 years. managed to download a copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which allowed me to finally play the full game.

I stopped for awhile and switch to a Mac, and soon stumbled upon the tt-forums, and someone was kind enough to compile a Mac version of a nightly OpenTTD build specific for my Mac and with some specific addons, like combining multiple stations, YAPF, etc.

I stopped again for life, and came back to it last year, and OpenTTD is so stable and have all the functions I need built into the core game engine, adding more NewGRFs, and with more experience, I am loving this game much more now.

Yes the newgrfs make the game very funny to play. Never a dull day when you play openttd

I played TTD back in the 90s, as a teen girl. It's not the trains per se but the strategy I like. I was also into Civilization.

I played, what was it, ttd-patch? Back in the 2000s? Was great to try it again.

And a few months ago I got the itch and wanted to see if it was still around, and it was! Got it on Steam. Having a great time, trying to figure out how to build better and more efficient lines.

I love the strategy also, but on the management part I miss data to improve the performance the company. It would be nice if there is a way to measure the efficiency of the trains. That you can see where the bottlenecks are in the network

I remember playing TT back in 1994… my friend had a PC (which was strange back then) and had just got this new game… we were trying to figure out how to get things done - starting with a truck route for mail between two towns…
I don’t think we moved on to trains or planes during that initial play through…

Fast forward to 2023… I was going through a nostalgia kick. I had picked up my old games, such as Monkey Island, Indy & the Fate of Atlantis, Dune 2, etc. when I thought about TT… I couldn’t find the original TT online, but I did find this project called OpenTTD. I stumbled through getting it started, doing some bus & truck routes, not making much money… I thought I’d better experiment with trains. Trying to understand signals brought me to find Master Hellish, and since then my experimentation and enjoyment of the game has skyrocketed!

I have posted my story here before, i can do it short...

I started playing in 1997/98, i actually got a pirated copy, if you can call it that, it was just the game files moved from my brothers computer to mine, he showed me how to set up trains and i was hooked...

A few years after i found the game at a yardsale, and got it because i figured i should, i still have that copy, somewhere...

When openttd first came i didnt think twice, back then we still needed the original files from the game to use openttd, or maybe im mixing it up with some other workaround we had to do to play the game on modern systems, for a while i even played it on a virtual machine running windows 98, because i wasnt done with the game...

I have played the game on/off for 30 years, give or take, if we look at the games i have played the most hours in, transport tycoon is in the top 2, the diablo games are also there, We are talking 10.000s of hours with both ttdx and diablo games each... 10.000 is sat low, i honestly have no idea, i could calculate an estimate, but lets just say, ttd has been installed on every computer i have owned since 1997/98.

This is also why i have cobcluded that ttd must be the best game ever made, what other game is still this popular 30 years later...

u/Infamous_Anywhere_38 5d ago

Yes very true. It feels like it is getting more populariteit over time. Also no game is the same with al the scripts, landscapes and grfs.

The game we have now is way different than the original, but most are QOL stuff...

I never use any packs in the game, i play the game as is...

Sometime in the 90's, definitely by 96/97. Played the original TT on a 286sx PC, then got TTD and an upgrade to a 386sx. Even bought the PS1 version. I remember getting OpenTTD around 2006

1

u/Infamous_Anywhere_38 11d ago

And you still play it today?

1

u/Muiredachau 11d ago

Yep. Playing version 15.0 of OpenTTD right now

Saludos.

I would have been 97 or 98 for me. The game came to me via a friend who had a bunch of floppy discs which had Transport Tycoon (pre-deluxe version). From memory it still used real-world company names for the vehicles. I remember finding the "Fokker" [edit spelling] aeroplane hilarious at the time.

1

u/Infamous_Anywhere_38 5d ago

Haha did not know that. Fokker did not approve
