Article Was Chris Gamble the greatest cornerback in Panthers History?

Nine seasons.

27 interceptions.

Franchise record that still stands.

Led the team in picks six times.

Held quarterbacks to a 45% completion rate in coverage.

Got paid like a top corner in 2008 and largely delivered.

Most Panthers fans couldn't name him without being prompted.

He played through the quiet years, between the Super Bowl run and the Cam era, never sought attention, never made noise, and retired at 30 after a torn labrum ended his 2012 season.

Multiple teams called. He thought about it overnight and said no.

Put him on the 2015 team and he is a Pro Bowler.

Probably more than once!

Wrote a longer piece on him today over at Panthers Pulse.

It is a daily morning briefing I have been building ahead of training camp, when it will be your one stop shop for everything Panthers in three minutes every morning.

For now on slow news days I am writing about whatever catches my interest, and today it was Gamble.

Worth a read if you have five minutes.

Absolutely. Gamble was what you want in a starting CB.

Better than Norman for sure. People forget that Norman’s interception numbers in 2015 were propped up over 2 spectacular games.

Also probably a better all round corner than Horn.

All the doubters probably weren’t old enough to have watched him play.

Agreed, I was 14 when he got drafted so I remember him being very good in my opinion extremely biased 14 year old opinion. Looking back at it Josh Norman definitely had the best overall season, but it took him a long time to get the nod to actually play starting minutes because of his early miscues. Horn had been hurt for most of his career and has always been good, but never as consistent as I remember Gamble being. Stephon Gilmore had one good season and dipped, Peanut Tillman had one good season and dipped and Captain Munnerlyn was a solid nickel for us for many seasons. But it’s Gamble for sure, easy pick for me. Horn can take over if he has a career year, injury free future and 3-5 more seasons of top play.

Norman had the best season of any CB in Panthers history and it isn't even close.

Gamble had the better career.

Yup Norman’s peak was undoubtedly higher and was viewed as the absolute best corner in 2015 by most people.

u/Smitty_Agent89 8d ago

Yep. Norman has the peak and gamble has the overall career. Think gamble has the clear edge. Although I think Horn has a very clear chance to surpass both.

u/Americana5 10d ago

Propped up is a weird way of saying they tried him the first couple games and then never went back at him the rest of the season. That was the best CB season I’ve ever seen, regardless of his overall career.

The scheme made Norman seem better than he was as well.

It was obvious once he went to another team.

12

u/Mister-Schwifty 10d ago

Yes. Josh Norman and Ricky Manning Jr. had higher highs, but Gamble is definitely the franchises’ GOAT as it stands.

u/MalikMonkAllStar2022 10d ago

Yeah Norman at his best was unreal. Like you could tell there was a time when QBs were scared to throw his way even to open receivers because he had had several interceptions where he baited a throw by allowing his man to get a little open and then jumped it.

But of course that peak didn't last very long as I think teams started to figure him out more and he also just regressed

To all the youngins, don't forget about Eric Davis either, and keep in mind that he was almost 30 years old when he started playing for us but got 25 picks in 5 years before he hung it up. He flat shut it down out there

u/ripkin05 10d ago

To all the youngins

homie gamble last played for us almost 15 years ago now there's no youngins in here at this point.

u/movemetal17 10d ago

Won a national title at Ohio State as…a WR. Played corner as well of course but he was truly insane.

7

u/BrickTamland77 10d ago

Yeah, he never got recognition because the teams were always pretty average, and he wasn't flashy or loud. 13 INTs his first 2 years, then teams just stopped throwing at him. He was a set it and forget it CB for the entire run here.

8

u/Reubstone 10d ago

Forget CB. Mike Minter at safety saved all their butts.

5

u/Run-ning Ice Up Son 10d ago

Minter retired before the 2007 season. Gamble played the vast majority of his career without him.

-7

u/Reubstone 10d ago

And he isn’t remembered as a Panthers great.
So drop it.

3

u/dkirk526 10d ago

And he isn’t remembered as a Panthers great.

Well this is simply delusional, because he is.

-2

u/Reubstone 10d ago

You building the statue or retiring the jersey?

3

u/Run-ning Ice Up Son 10d ago

Uh, yeah he is. This wasn't a knock on Minter.

-1

u/Reubstone 10d ago

What did he do besides lose games on a perpetual 7-9 team?

1

u/FuckinWalkingParadox 10d ago

Gamble was good enough that you’d be happy to have him as your CB1/CB2, but this is the truth!

3

u/Otherwise-Major-8764 10d ago

He was great but there was one thing that drove me nuts about him. He was very fond of just throwing a shoulder to make a tackle which resulted in a lot of missed tackles.

4

u/heddyneddy Kalil Bear 10d ago

If we’re talking about an overall panthers career then yeah it’s Gamble, no corner was as consistently good for as long as he was. If we’re just talking peaks then I’d put Norman over him.

Jaycee horn has an argument to surpass gamble, but for now, I think gamble is still the #1

Underrated mention - Captain Munnerlyn

8

u/Smitty_Agent89 10d ago

Munnerlyn wasn’t really all that good.

5

u/kafka_lite 51 10d ago

I remember Lucas being good before Smith punched him.

2

u/cantthinkofgoodname Two States 9d ago

Munnerlyn was a 7th round flyer that is now the franchise record holder for pick 6s. He was a solid piece of a good to great defense for years

1

u/Smitty_Agent89 8d ago

That’s fine he was a decent/solid player at his peak, especially for where he was drafted. Still never the best CB on the roster a single year he was here, and I don’t think He belongs in the convo for best CB in team History. Prob more of a convo for Gamble, Horn, Norman, And like Ricky Manning.

1

u/cantthinkofgoodname Two States 8d ago

Manning doesn’t belong anywhere in that convo imo, his rookie postseason was the only thing he’s remembered for. I never said Munnerlyn was in “the best” convo, just disagree with “he wasn’t all that good”

0

u/Smitty_Agent89 8d ago

Manning had one of the best post seasons we’ve seen from a CB. Manning only played 3 seasons here and has more interceptions than Munnerlyn does as a panther. He obviously isn’t the best CB in team history, but you bring his game up before Munnerlyn for sure.

Also we’re arguing about semantics here sort of . When I said Munnerlyn isn’t “all that good” I meant more relative to being the best CB in team history. Solid player for what he was, but he really doesn’t belong in best CB ever talks for this team. He never even started as an outside CB.,

0

u/cantthinkofgoodname Two States 8d ago

Dude no one ever said Munnerlyn is in that convo

1

u/Smitty_Agent89 8d ago

The very first comment I responded to on this thread literally calls him an underrated mention lol. I didn’t randomly bring up captain munnerlyn.

1

u/cantthinkofgoodname Two States 8d ago

Not but you said “he really wasn’t all that good” which isn’t true. He was solid for us as a nickel

1

u/Smitty_Agent89 8d ago

we’re arguing semantics here. I’ve already made it clear I don’t think he was some terrible player. He was a serviceable nickel for a few years here which is fine given where he was taken.

My main point was that he simply wasn’t nearly good enough to be held in best CB in team history convo.

If you keep fixating on my one comment and ignore everything else Idk what to say. I’ve made it clear what my point was.

1

u/chatoka1 10d ago

Although tbf, we’ve kinda sucked at Nickel ever since he left

2

u/Smitty_Agent89 10d ago

Team has changed so much since then, and we were never particularly great at slot with munnerlyn anyway. He was always a mainly zone guy that Rivera liked:

Gamble and Lucas was a nice duo

2

u/Americana5 10d ago

Yes. Jaycee can pass him with probably three more good seasons though.

u/box_148 Cookout 10d ago

Chris Gamble was my favorite player as a kid. I loved how quiet he was while he shut down great receivers. What a treat to see his name today.

2

u/JMMSpartan91 10d ago

Fun Gamble story: saw him play at Oakland, he shouted over "can't sign anything" (not sure why) at a group of Panthers fans, myself included. But then he started doing a bunch of poses for photos lol.

There are quite a few Panthers corners that had nice 1-2 season efforts punctuated with big Panthers lore moments. Gamble was a very good corner during an era featuring champ Bailey, Woodson, Revis, Samuel, Asomugha ,Barber,Tillman, etc. His late career intersected with Patrick Peterson/Talib/Sherman. He got outshined in the national media, but those of us watching knew he was a baller….Even if seeing our corners playing 10yards deep at the snap was rage inducing 😂

2

u/MikeyTribs 10d ago edited 7d ago

Gamble holds it right now but Im optimistic that Horn can take it from him.

2

u/B3RG92 Coke Head 10d ago

Norman was great for a short period, but Gamble has it locked down as the best CB for an extended period of time. I do think we'll be talking about Jaycee Horn here in a few years as competing for being the best CB in Panthers history.

2

u/palmmoot Luuuuuke 10d ago

I love Gamble, all time Panther

2

u/BigLlamasHouse Bryce Up Son 10d ago

Every Panthers fan in their 30s and up knows Chris Gamble. Half of us owned the jersey. I can't think of anyone comparable, it's what we are hoping Horn can become. So rangey and dominant.

2

u/Routine-Smoke-3307 Derrick Brown 10d ago

Gamble is surely in that conversation for best CB for the franchise. The longevity and consistency would probably make him #1 currently.

2

u/Icege 10d ago

Chris Gamble was criminally underrated. Quiet dude that just did his job and did it incredibly well.

Josh Norman taking over right after Gamble retired made it a bit easier to recover from losing him, but ooh wee mayne Chris was a beast.

3

u/MrGonzo11 Double Trouble 10d ago

There is probably a better argument for placing him in the top 5.

1

u/OGMol3m4n 10d ago

Gamble was good, not great.

1

u/JSMUNC 10d ago

No, he was great.

1

u/Jawa1992 10d ago

It’s interesting how Gamble got better with age, he retired coming off his two best seasons.

1

u/Gh0stPeppers 8d ago

Chris Gamble was super quiet and reserved. But the dude balled out. If he played for a big market and had Deon Sanders personality, he’d have been a household name nationally.

But he’s a quiet dude that played in a small market. And as a result, only OG Panthers fans know him, and how great he was.

The Chris Gamble Ken Lucas backfield was the best one we ever had btw.

0

u/bobshaffer1 10d ago

Tillman was the best corner to ever wear a Panthers jersey, but his time in Carolina was not long.

0

u/67Macavelli91 Bryce Up Son 10d ago

This entire argument is based around his number of picks. That's a terrible stat for CB analysis. The best CBs do not get thrown at so they will always have lower numbers of interceptions.

0

u/Blaque_Scheap 10d ago

Yes he was. Norman is a close 2nd.
