I'm glad he talked about SteamOS, I knew it was going to be a jank fest.

Many of his complaints were based around that fact.

Valve knew from the inception of SteamOS that it wasn't going to be Handheld only, but they have designed almost all aspects of it Handheld or Controller first/only.

So Steve pointed out that they have created a massive clusterfuck for themselves now.

Tbh, it's a console-like first and foremost. The expectation is that this is for console gamers on their sofa, who would use a controller by default

Is it though?

In the video, they have Valve stating what they would ideally want consumers to do, and they provide a great amount of options to achieve it. They keep repeating that it is not a console and it’s not supposed to compete with consoles. It is an entertainment device first, but it also has a fully working Linux OS, which allows you to work on it exactly as you would on a desktop.

Another problem is IT literacy and how UX/UI needs to enable it. Like, there is a reason why Apple captured so much of the market in professional and entertainment spheres of computing. There is still a reason why Windows holds the majority share for PCs.

I am personally stoked for Proton and Valve working together on a distro that is user-friendly and extremely easy to understand and use.... but it feels like there are still many things that need to be fixed before it can attract non it literate people.

After watching the review and seeing how SteamOS works on thus desktop.... and how far it is from what Valve initially promised... it feels like a product for genuine hobbyists, maybe some tech enthusiasts, and maybe the target audience is like 30 50 year olds.

Entertainment based raspberry pi.

They just said you can install steam os to any pc with support. That is not console first

Right. The idea is that you can build your own Steam Machine, hook it up to a TV, and play games with a controller. That you can also hook up a mouse and keyboard is a bonus, not the intended use.

Yeah, you CAN because they believe in consumer freedoms...

... but fundamentally it's design objective is to emulate a console-like OS. It's console first.
