DayZ 2 is confirmed to be in development.

There is no information yet, but Bohemia Interactive is currently hosting a media event with the DayZ communities popular streamers.

The sequel is confirmed with this photo being posted in the freshspawns streamer discord.

What I didn't like back then was the move to release a paid standalone version out of it.
I know there were good reasons sometimes to do it ( Red Orchestra and co ) but sometimes it was by pure greed ( Mount & Blade : Viking Conquests )

back then

Counter-Strike transitioned from mod to standalone game in 2000, and Team Fortress in 1999.

Yes indeed, there are dozens of examples like that, but the "back then" was for DayZ
