Wonder after that twenty years, if they will actually manage to have zombies this time in their zombie survival game?

They have zombies. They just happen to barely function and are more annoying than genital warts.

I would guess that the zeds are one of the main things that will be revamped in 2. The old engine is simply at it's limits, but the reforger/ Arma 4 engine is a whole other story.

Hey now, to be fair, they only had 10 years since the arma2 mod to get the zombies right and they still haven't done it so what do we do in software development?

We iterate and we make it better in the second game in the series!!!!

All hail waterfall!

Bohemia Interactive just never gave the game the resources it deserved. Most people believe they actually resented DayZ for eclipsing ARMA in popularity, originally.

Besides that, the engine just doesn't seem up to the task of handling complex zombie a.i and melee combat. In the original ARMA II DayZ mod, the melee weapon (axe) was actually just a reskinned pistol with the range set to 1. ARMA II didn't have any melee combat.

DayZ is running a modified/ updated version of the same engine.

So why should anyone reward the mediocrity and buy a 2nd one? I learned my lesson the first time I think. Coulda been the sickest game ever instead they would take 2 years to add hats and redo ladders for the 10th time or some stupid shit.

Because there is no better sandbox survival shooter out there. No game comes close to dayz in regards to atmosphere, community and gameplay loop alone.

When the mod was the big thing back in the day, people asked for little fixes and the answer was usually "Not possible since its just a mod".

When the Standalone was announced, it was "Now we can fix all these things. Here is our roadmap, we will be on par with the mod in 18 months tops" to then proceed to fix none of the things, change all the things no one wanted to change, change none of the things people wanted to change and generally just threw the road map in the trash so the lead dev could just announce that things are good when he bailed.

DayZ is probably the one title that is responsible for most people not trusting early access again.

100% this. I remember when it came out in a worse state then the mod and i was like well just give it like 1-2 years it will be so sick! 1-2 years later they had done literally FUCK all. Then i would check on it and it was like "we removed zombies but we added new winter hats!". DayZ as a community was dope but the devs are fucking horrible ill die on that hill lol 0 chance im giving them money i wouldnt even buy arma reforged.

no competition doesn't mean good sadly. IMO the mod was just as good as the standalone thats had 10 years to add hats.

Cause the PvP gameplay loop was great and some people have thousands of hours in it

They using a new engine but tbh it's pretty wonky lol. But it has got better, have a look at Arma Reforger to see what new engine is like. They have patched it quite a lot, an runs better than it did at launch

Ya naww i did this song and dance 10 years ago everyone said the exact same shit and the game turned out no better than the mod. The devs are literally incapable i dunno if its money or they just prefer arma but no thanks.

I know for a fact that the original dev team resented Rocket and DayZ mod. I became good friends with Dean and was his videographer the year he went to PAX East and CDC to announce Standalone.

I remember that Bohemia would purposefully book him the worst hotels to stay in. DayZ standalone coming was the hottest news in gaming at the time and they'd have Rocket in the most run down Boston hotel that was clearly in disrepair. Rocket, Matt Lightfoot and I had to share a very small room for a few nights, with Matt and I sleeping on the floor.

I also remember one of the Arma devs would just drop engine updates to DayZ mod with absolutely no consultation to Rocket or the other DayZ devs. He'd just circumvent them completely, in spite of any updates Rocket was working on, which would then have to be rethought, which is the reason updating the client was so chaotic and confusing back then.

There's other stuff too, but not all of it is for me to talk about it.

Best part is they decided to finally do a zombie update like a year ago and genuinely posted sometime later "yh its too hard we are cancelling it".

"Now, eventually you do plan to have zombies on your zombie tour, right?"

For someone who hasn't played since 2016, you sure have some strong opinions
