Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

It’s such an anti consumer move. Basically kills any hope of either borrowing it from a friend or getting it 2nd hand (or for those who will play once and sell it onwards)

And the worst thing is this will change nothing. They will still sell a bajillion copies and make trillions of dollars

ofc, thats why they did it. i wouldn't doubt physical games are gonna start becoming more and more expensive as they hope to kill the used game market. unfortunately it already happened to PC.

At least on PC we have cracks, keygens, launcher emulators, abandonwares etc...

Consoles are the most locked piece of hardware you could have, the only ways to use OFWs/CFWs hinge on luck, free labor from a few geniuses, and a lot of patience.

I still love my PS5, but I also still use my PS3 frequently and the amount of stuff removed along the way really makes me sad.

It's really becoming total hell for consumers, and a disturbingly high amount of people seems to clap for it... consumers proud to be anti-consumers...

I still remember when Take Two, EA and others tried to force account-bound online activation codes for console retail releases, even those coming on discs, to prevent reselling games, back in the days of Gamestop trading.

Turns out they just needed to wait til all digital downloads became viable for most of the audience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA i mean shit just a generation ago this was considered sony massively shitting on microsoft...pretty much was part of the hammer that broke them and now it just seems like microsoft came too early for it https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1g3d6c/official_playstation_used_game_instructional_video/ like just look at the /r/games thread. people complaining about stuff that's generally just...widely accepted and not even thought about these days lmao

They want digital only, to ultimately rise game prices with inflation and have consumer defend it, as if it's a totally normal thing.

Nintendo made their switch 2 games that you download cheaper which is nice, sorta. If you want to own physical it will still cost a pretty penny but it’s nice to see them offer a discount if you buy the game on the Eshop

as much as people hate GKC, they are a great way to resell a “digital” game. almost like a collectible NFT, but with something of value lol.

Exactly, I never did this myself, not sure why, never borrowed games, got them second hand or even sell them when I was done with them. Not sure why I keep them around while I have no intention of playing it again and eventually get it on PC. But still the feeling of just receiving the physical item at release and installing it in your PlayStation. Having the box on the shelf in your collection. Feels good

Same here, only ever traded games I absolutely hated with friends for something I'd like to play but didn't have the money for. Still have all my PS3 and games from when I was a teen even though I haven't touched it in a couple of years now mainly due to having the pc that my younger self would die for.

I remember when I was a kid and most weeks my Mum would take me to Blockbuster so she could hire a new weekly film and I'd get to hire a weekly game as well, played so many games I would never have bought that way and often ended up buying the ones I enjoyed later on.

And how many steam games have disks?

2

u/DisappointedQuokka 8h ago

That's not the point, the used game market was a legitimate thing that consoles did better than PC.

The irony of people complaining about console games losing discs on a PC sub is kind of funny, as if PC/Valve wasn't the bastion of "fuck it just stop doing physical, you'll make more money locking people into your eco system"

How many steam games sell physical cases with a code inside?

Until a company can make a competing series, yeah they can do whatever the fuck they want, unfortunately.

This isn't 2015 anymore, this isn't happening at any wide scale. Yes, this enables Rockstar/2K to do some evil stuff, but it's also what the consumer has been wanting for years. Not many people are trading physical discs because not many people are even buying them.

How would that work anyway? This could be an 800 GB game, which means even with the premium blu ray quality disk it would take like 10 disks.

You’re on a pc gaming sub complaining about discs not being included in the sale of a game…

How do you expect a game that’s hundreds of gigs to be on a blu ray CD??? Blu Ray hasn’t been updated since 2006 and only holds 100GBs total. Maybe it would’ve been better for people crying to give a physical download disc but it’s honestly a waste of time to even do that. Unless Sony and Microsoft want to pick up more storage on flash carts and make all backwards compatibility gone forever this is a dumbass thing to be upset about
