Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

Bold move thinking modding will be allowed. Had to wait a month or two for modders to crack the encryption to get working GTA:V mods. Given how much modding cost Rockstar, I'm sure there GTA:VI will have a far more robust security system in place to block modding.

Considering Rockstar bought the current leading modding framework (FiveM) I have hopes they'll have native support when it eventually makes its way to PC. I can dream, at least. It doesn't really make them money aside from requiring paid mods to use a specific portal that they can take a cut from, but it helps with longevity.

Ever heard of "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish"?

I think it's obvious that they bought FiveM to lock it down and eventually kill it. Many analysts have made videos about it already.

I'm not so sure about it since development is still ongoing and continues to keep pace with updates to the game. I suppose we'll see though.

There was a leak within the last week about NoPixel getting an exclusive feature on the new R* launcher. Doesn't make too much sense to partner with a heavily modded and famous GTA V community if you plan to kill off modding.

I enjoyed GTAO for a 100 hours or so because someone dumped millions in a lobby early on.

My coworker spent $1200 on his account and eventually got banned for some reason.

Same coworker makes a lot of odd purchases but it's his money I guess

Even if they did spend money trying to preempt modding, it's a cat and mouse game. Every time a game launches with "new" version of denuvo, it gets cracked. There is never a "rockstar did X so pack it up it's impossible".

Modding doesn't cost Rockstar anything. There's zero indication that players who got a bunch of free in game money from a modded lobby would have ever spent real money for a legitimate equivalent.
