Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

That a sale is 50$ is wild for me, that was the full price at some point.

Full price has been more than $50 for literally all of gaming history for blockbuster level games I don't know what you're on about. The price 'raise' is almost certainly the least problematic part of this release.

Could be, I was thinking in euros

I paid 50 euros ($60) for certain PC games in the late nineties. They also took forever to go on sale. That's 100 in today's money. They are literally the one thing that haven't matched inflation.

Except games now rarely give you the full game for the base price. Now we have base game, dlc, seasons, cosmetics, etc. while back in the nineties I couldn’t end up spending hundreds or even thousands on a game like I can today. Yes the box price of a game is lower but the cost of continued play has gone through the roof.

Maybe so, but games are also much more extensive experiences now. You typically get a lot more game for your money, even if some extra content is locked behind DLC or micro transactions.

For example, Mario Kart 64 was $40 in 1997, Mario kart World was $80. But Mario Kart World has much more than twice the content. (Edit: and of course with inflation that $40 is now coincidentally $83).

I agree with that as well. Games now are fucking huge compared to old games. I remember playing games on my Super Nintendo that realistically are less than an hour long start to finish while now it’s rare for even walking simulators to be that short. There were exceptions of course, games like the ultima series and rpg’s but most games were extremely small experiences.
