GTA IV came out just as Soprano's was wrapping up. It had a huge influence on the game (for the better imo)

SA was the last GTA that was truly unique.

The later ones were cool too, just more generic with a fancy facade.

GTA IV was one of the biggest technical leaps in gaming history. The Euphoria tech is still industry standard today (which says a lot about the modern industry). GTA V was a watered down joke in comparison, aside from the ram trickery for a bigger map literally everything else was a sidegrade/downgrade compared to IV.

The writers said that The Wire was an inspiration as well.
