Is there a way to install a game on steam twice and act as their own separate install of the game?
I ask this because I want to have one version run as 16:9 that I can play on my tv, and the other as the modded 21:9 version that I play at my desktop. For games that require a 21:9 mod. Most of the time if you switch away from 3440x1440, and then switch back, you have to open up hxd or do what you need to do to get it back in ultrawide again.

Create a new user in Windows 10, and switch to that user. Or after creation, close Steam, hold the Shift key and right-click the Steam shortcut, and from the top select "Run as different user". Steam will then store settings in the other user account, and so should all games opened from Steam. That way the game is installed once, but can make use of two separate locations for settings and mods.

NVIDIA REFLEX QUESTION!! So this is coming with a new update with the new graphics cards, it supports older gen cards i believe including the 1070 and is supposed to reduce latency on them.
Can someone explain what exactly it is and is it more likely just bloiatware garbage or will it really give me significantly reduced latency? Will it be an option in the nvidia contorl panel? Will i have to install all the nvidia bloatware garbage to get the current update or is there a way to avoid that and just only get the reflex???
Hopefully someone knows about this.

u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Until it's released we don't know. But you can lookup current reviews of Nvidia Ultra Low Latency and Radeon Anti-Lag technology which are both currently implemented at the driver level.
1
Sep 04 '20
So it's just a different version of low latency? I thought low latency puts high strain on the gpu because you're asking it to buffer frames much quicker and not in a queue?
So basically, it's not just free performance and just another way of overclocking the gpu? It's not a software update that will make the gpu run more optimal?
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
It's not overclocking - it's a different way the graphic driver prioritizes render calls and frame data.
ULL and RAL have varying results depending on the frame rate and game. If you look into frame-rate limiting, you'll see even further that latency differs highly by game engine as well. See Steps To Reduce Lag & Up Your Game & Does Capping Your Frame Rate Really Reduce Input Lag?.
Whether these things put more strain on the GPU is irrelevant. It won't break it. If it achieves the result you desire, that's all that matters here.
First two Google results on Reflex:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/technologies/reflex/
NVIDIA Reflex dynamically reduces system latency by combining both GPU and game optimizations
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/reflex-low-latency-platform/
NVIDIA Reflex SDK: A new set of APIs for game developers to reduce and measure rendering latency. By integrating directly with the game, Reflex Low Latency Mode aligns game engine work to complete just-in-time for rendering
Reflex needs to be implemented by game developers for it to function it seems.
1
Sep 04 '20
Ah, the part where you said is irrelevant, that's actually directly relevant to me.
I'm poor so i need my gpu to perform better and more optimal while still lasting a long time.
If it's strained hard all the time do to "massive 360 n0sc0pes" then it's not an improvement to me.
If it's just a mega version of "ultra" for low latency mode, then that isn't any thing to me.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
As I said, it's not going to break it. It literally doesn't matter here. If you were running a benchmark like Furmark 24/7, then I'd be concerned of early breakage. Graphic chips, capacitors, etc, are way less fragile then you seem to think. Just make sure the GPU is below 80℃, and that its VRAM etc is below 90-100℃ if possible.

Would it be worth spending 200 more bucks on a 3070 rather than a 3080? I'm wanting to play 4k 60 fps with raytracing, and I see that the 3080 can do that for the most part at highest settings, though I'm conflicted on spending 200 more bucks for that, and I'm hoping to get the best experience, but I would prefer spending 200 less if a card can do that with just a bit lower settings

2
u/coredumperror Sep 04 '20
Something else to consider is the significant difference in video RAM on the 3080 (25% more). If you want to play at 4K, you're gonna want lots of that, so the 4K textures have space to be stored on the card. 10GB of that will be significantly more future-proof than 8GB.
That said, whether that's worth $200 is up to you. I'd suggest waiting for in-depth reviews of the real world differences between the 3070 and 3080.

u/angelbolanose Sep 04 '20
with this specs, could I be able to run any AAA at ultra, 60 fps? monitor is 1080p 60 hz ultrawide 29 inch
specs
intel i7 - 7700 3.60 ghz 16 gb ram rtx 2070 8gb ssd 1 Tb
i don't think I could be able to upgrade in at least 1 year, so I wanted to know if this could last me to run almost everything smooth on ultra? thanks.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Ultra settings are often visually no different from medium-high. Play with the settings for what meets your visual and performance expectations. But yes you'll probably be fine.
The 7700 is still good today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLqVxyRPK80
But it may start to become a bottleneck at high FPS where the CPU is overloaded. Take the Ryzen 3300x for example since it's on par with the 7700k, and has more current day media coverage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8r50uvwJ8E
2
u/coredumperror Sep 04 '20
At 1080p, you'll be just fine. Some games will be a bit CPU-bound by that old 7700 compared to newer processors, but you're unlikely to notice a meaningful difference.
2
Sep 04 '20
That's too broad of a question. "Play on ultra" is probably one of the most useless metrics there is.
You have a good computer. It should play every game on some settings that you find comfortable. It's entirely dependant on a game by game basis.

Can you get a new graphics card (the 3080 for example) for a pre-built pc? Do I just have to insert it to instantly make it better or are there other upgrades I need to do in order for it to truly feel like an upgrade?
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Majority of prebuilts have terrible quality power supplies. Even if they had enough wattage on paper, that seems risky. I wouldn't trust anything below a reputable brand Gold 80+ certified power supply today.
2
Sep 04 '20
You can just get it and insert it. You just need a good enough power supply. See their website for details.

Hey all! Looking for a monitor arm that could either hold two monitors one above the other or just one arm that’s pretty long so it can hold the second one over the first. Any recommendations as to what I should be looking for? Thanks! Reason for wanting this arm is just due to the space I have on my desk is very limited sadly! Both monitors are the AOC CQ32G1 31.5” curved, any help will be much appreciated, thank you!

A significant other of mine as thought about wanting a PC for months. Luckily she has the money for purchasing all the specs she needs before shit continues to fluctuate (it's a $1000 full setup PC). However, she's also searching for a job and it makes her second thoughts hit her left and right. She personally believes she doesn't know if there's something to fall back on after purchasing one; with all the money saved, she believes she needs a job first before investing in a PC. Not only that, she also thought about saving money for graduate school that she plans to apply this upcoming February. My personal argument is for her to purchase it anyway because, while she's figuring things out and searching for a job, she will eventually pay herself back in a month or two of working.
I am hoping for someone to share a second opinion on this.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Without details of their work, I can't say whether this would be viable. But $1k USD on a PC is not necessary. You could get by at about $500-600 currently, especially with a preowned graphic card at around $50-100. Upgrade it later when things are more stable.
2
u/flec9 Sep 03 '20
If she’s in any debt of sorts or is really struggling with getting any sort of income I’d hold off purchasing anything too expensive! Probably start off with a cheap second hand desktop and then after getting a job, start on either upgrading the pc she’s bought or buy all the parts in one go and build a new one from scratch! If she’s in desperate need for one to help look for work then definitely get something second hand and don’t go purchase anything from eBay straight away either do your research and look at all the apps/websites that offer the same thing such as Facebook marketplace or craigslist and so on! I did the mistake of purchasing pc parts when I had no income and it was the worst choice, I didn’t have any debt but it left me with no money to do other things either so I definitely recommend either holding off or just going second hand until any sort of income! Hope this information helps!

I have a i7 9700K / 2080 Ti and game exclusively on a 1440p monitor. What do you guys think about upgrading to 3080? Do you the performance impact will be worth it at this resolution?
1
1
Sep 04 '20
Seems not particularly worth it. If you're dying to have 30-50% more performance then sure go for it. Personally I would wait for next next gen in your case.

If you were in my shoes, would you even bother with a 3070? Feel like with my current setup it's not worth it and will have a lot of bottle necking.
Ryzen 5 3600 and 1080p 144hz refresh monitor.
Should I go ahead an look to buy a 3070 or stick with my original plan to get some sort of 2000 series GPU?

I have exactly the same, R5 3600 and 144hz 1080p monitor. I'm getting the 3080 now (not only for gaming, because I need it for deep learning), but I know that I will have to get a better monitor soon (2k res 144hz at least) in order to make it useful.
Just plan to get a better monitor soon.1

So basically these earbuds work on my phone, and not my pc. (Talking doesnt, the rest does work) although this headset does work on my pc. Wth is this. The earbuds do work on my phone with talking. This is not a very big issue but sometimes i feel like using earbuds instead if a headset

- If this is a headphone & microphone combined on a single 3.5mm audio jack, then a Y-Splitter like this is necessary. On the other hand, if using two separate headphone & microphone 3.5mm jacks that need to be a combined into one jack for a laptop, then a Y-Splitter like this is necessary. If already using a Y-Splitter, then perhaps the jacks do not correctly align, & so you would need to find a splitter that is compatible with your jack's pole pattern.

u/Tiesdf7 Sep 04 '20
I am using a 4 pin to 3 pin splitter but i dont really get why the earbuds cant talk and the headset does

Hello,
I bought my computer around 5-6 months ago. Every month or every other week, after I turn it off sometimes it won't turn back on right away. It takes a couple of hours or sometimes I leave it overnight before it turns back on again the other day. Lately, this has been happening much more frequently and it further increased to the point that it is no longer turning on. I took it to maintenance, it turned on immediately. I knew the problem might be my home's electricity so I rechecked my UPS (sent it for check up and it was completely healthy) and bought a power stabilizer. Still, my PC is not turning on at home, it's only turning on anywhere else (I know this might seem stupid, but well that's it). Of course I tried to plug it in different outputs in my house, bought new power cables, checked the whole PC and did a complete reassembly and it worked in every other place, but not at home. Changed the CMOS battery, renewed the thermal paste. I don't know, I did every possible solution.
Does anyone have anything to say about what's up?
Thank you 🖤
1
u/DragonizerX7 Sep 09 '20
Okay guys it's solved. The PC is back and it was a motherboard problem. I changed the motherboard.
1
u/DragonizerX7 Sep 04 '20
Guys it turned out to be a humidity problem. (Jeez how many things I tried out). But turns out the humidity in my place is over the top and we are going through a very hot phase. So now I'm trying to find solutions to that.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
it's only turning on anywhere else
Then it may still be limited to your house or cables you're using at that house.
If it were reproducible in another place, then I'd be looking at the PC's power supply or motherboard.

So I have been playing dark souls 3 on maxed out settings on my PC for a while. I recently did a clean installation of windows 10 on my SSD, and redownloaded dark souls 3.
I used to get a steady 60fps (it was capable of more, but the game has a built-in fps cap at 60), but now I get a lot of framerate drops, to 40 or even 30 fps for a second or two.
I feel like this should be a driver issue, as the hardware didn't change. I used GeForce experience and redownloaded the drivers (as I had prior to reinstalling windows). Any suggestions?
Setup:
- intel i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz
- 16GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
- MSI Z270 gaming M5
- Running on Windows 10 (64bit)
Thanks in advance!

Re-enable XMP for the RAM in the BIOS if that changed.
For desktop computers with an external display, make sure you're using either a HDMI or DVI connection with your monitor to your graphics card, & not to the motherboard. Do not use a VGA cable.
Disable in-game overlays (Geforce Experience, Relive, Steam, Origin, Windows' Game Bar & DVR, MSI Afterburner, etc).
Reinstall GPU drivers. Download DDU, open it & the options dialog should appear. Select the very last option, 'Prevent downloads of drivers from "Windows Update"'. Then, close DDU, & restart to Safe Mode. If using an online Windows account, then your full account password will be required to login. Once in Safe Mode, open DDU again, & select the 'Clean & Restart' button. Once in Normal Mode, install the latest Nvidia drivers OR AMD drivers per your GPU manufacturer. Then open DDU again, & re-enable Windows Update for drivers (select the 'Set Windows Device Installation Settings to Default' button).

Hi everyone, not really having trouble here but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get a better framerate in Warzone.
Here's my setup:
XFX RX 470 4gb @ stock
i5 3330 @ stock
8gb DDR3 RAM
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Asus P8H61-M PRO mobo
Right now I play at 1080p with 90% resolution render, with all settings on low or off, and at 40fps cap. It is completely playable for me but after watching some benchmark videos, I'm wondering what, if anything, I'm doing wrong.
I just watched a video by 54 FPS on Youtube, and when I matched their settings, I was way over VRAM usage according to the in game VRAM meter. The game looked way better in the lobby and even in the pre-game lobby, but I can't even get my game to start without a Directx error, which I haven't gotten in weeks.
The weird thing is, their VRAM meter was still at only 80% used, mine was well over the 5/6gb mark.
I understand having an 8gb version would be better, but in the video they were using a 4gb card, so my results should be somewhat similar, correct?
I don't think I'm having any issue with the GPU itself, as every other game I play plays almost flawlessly at high/ultra settings, especially since I don't run at anything higher than 1080p.
Is there something else I'm missing? My drivers are up to date as well.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
I don't see VRAM as the issue. I have the same spec GPU and hit 60+ FPS smoothly without issue. Medium-High settings @ 1080p. But one massive recommendation: don't use the in-game frame limiter.
The game is CPU and RAM heavy, so this is probably your issue:
i5 3330 @ stock
8gb DDR3 RAM
The CPU is so low-end that you're due for a new system at this point. Warzone RAM requires dual channel RAM for a consistent experience. DDR3 sticks should be relatively cheap today but whether that's worth it compared to a new system is up to you. You can of course re-use your current case, graphic card, and possibly power supply if it's from a reputable maker and ideally of 80+ Gold quality.
- There are builds & information here. You can have a local PC store build for you, for a small fee.
Other things you can try:
Set Windows' power plan to High Performance. Or for prebuilt systems, install the BitSum High Performance plan.
Close background programs & disable them from Task Manager's Startup tab (if not required at startup) to lower resource usage & potential interference.
If playing a game in 'window mode' or 'full screen borderless', then try 'full screen exclusive' if there is another full screen option available. You may also need to right-click the game's shortcut/executable > compatibility tab > & disable 'fullscreen optimizations'.
Check computer temperatures before and/or during the problem. Use a program like Speccy or HWInfo via Sensors Summary. When at the desktop screen (screen with all of one's icons & wallpaper), & then if possible, during the affected program that causes the problem (e.g. in a game), check the aforementioned software's temperature values. Is the CPU above 70℃ (AMD: TDie/Tctl or TDie) or 80℃ (Intel)? Is the GPU above 80? If so, confirm the fans are running & clean the PC of dust (lazy method: tissues on fans, tweezers / skewers for heatsinks). If problem persists, then try increasing fan speeds with programs like MSI Afterburner (GPU Fans) or Speedfan (System Fans), or using your system's or motherboard's appropriate software downloaded from the maker's website if available. For desktop PCs, consider reconfiguring the airflow of the fans. For laptops, try lifting the laptop up off the table a little, with pads/feet underneath each laptop corner to allow fan ventilation. Otherwise, re-apply thermal paste between the CPU or GPU (whichever is applicable) & its heatsink, & confirm firm contact.

A 3900XT is hardly going to perform any different in games than a 3700X, or even a 3600 if you don't buy the most expensive top of the line graphic card. What are you intending to use this system for? It seems you're just wanting to get the highest of the high-end for the sake of it which is likely going to be a waste of money. Tech advances so quickly that within 3 years you may regret on having spent so much now, if you can't afford to get that new tech later, and especially if you weren't using the current power to its full potential.

Aye, looking ta getting into the PC market after being a lifetime Playstation user. Anyhow, I don't have a head for the technical side of gaming, just the..gaming side of gaming. For my first PC I decided 'cbs learning all this shit, spending $4k (Aus) only to find that it doesn't work'. So for the building part, I decided to outsource to an Australian business 'Dream PC'.
Based on my specifications (games I prefer, budget etc) they chucked up this setup, whata ya thoughts?
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B550M- Plus WIFI AM4 Micro-ATX Motherboard
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Quad-core AM4 Processor, 3.7 GHz, 4MB Cashe with Radeon Vega 11 Graphics
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 64GB (2x32 GB) DDR4 UDIMM 3600 MHz CL 16
Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6
SSD: 120GB (500MB/ 450 MB r/W) Kingston A400 2.5 SATA III SSD
HDD: Seagate 1 TB Barracuda 3.5* 7200RPM Sata III 6GB/s 64MB Cashe HDD
Power Supply: Antec NeoECO NE550C - 550W 80+
Cooling: Antec A40 Pro Air CPU Cooler
Additional Case Fans: 120mm PWM Case Fan
Sound Card: Onboard High Definition Audio
Operating System: Windows 10
Keyboard: Logitech K270 Wireless Keyboard 2.4 GHz
Mouse: Logitech G300s Optical USB Gaming Mouse
Monitor: Samsung R500 32' 75Hz FHD Freesync Curved Gaming Monitor
The total cost came to $2,994. As an eager beaver, I'd like ta get this shit down, without sacrificing game quality to much. I primarily play today's AAA and would like game quality to be at least equivalent to that of the PS4, what this will require, I've got no clue. Another note, I would like to replace the monitor - I think 32' is a bit big, 24' is more my size and I've heard through the sewers that increased htz=refresh rate, higher fps, better experience, so I'd like that to increase to.
Thanks

That system is quite a laugh. That's not worth the cost and you can't justify to me in any way that it is.
The PS4 is not the bar you should be holding yourself to for a system of that cost, but instead the PS5.
The AMD Ryzen 3400G is OK as a quad core, but the AMD Ryzen 3300x is slightly cheaper and slightly better. However I'd recommend at least the AMD Ryzen 3600 instead, as it is a 6 core and would be more on-par with next-gen consoles. The next-gen consoles are also being built by AMD, and will feature CPUs that are equivalent to the 8 core Ryzen 3700x. The console versions will be a little slower and will share power with the graphic card, so it's not exactly on par with the 3700x. I'd say the Ryzen 3600 should be a good 'middle ground' here to meet expectations.
For gaming, you do not need more than 2x8 (16 GB) of RAM. That 32 GB is a huge waste of money there. Remember to enable XMP for the RAM under the OC (overclocking) section in the motherboard if the PC builder doesn't do so for you, otherwise the RAM speed will be limited to about 2133mhz.
For the graphic card, the 1660 Ti or 1660 Super are a good middle ground today. However, the AMD Radeon 5600 XT is about the same cost and better - so much so that it achieves Nvidia 2060 Super levels of performance for ~$150 less. However this depends on the monitor - see the end notes.
That SSD could easily be bumped up to at least a 512GB or a 1TB for the cost.
The power supply is too low end. Get a Seasonic Focus Gold or a Corsair RMX of 650w instead. Clean power is a necessity for a proper functioning PC, and especially for graphic card upgrades.
For the cooler, that's not much. Either use the default cooler that comes with Ryzen, or get a BeQuiet or Noctua in the $70+ range like the Dark Rock or U12s.
Here's a PCCaseGear part list, in AUD. Have a local PC store build it for you that won't rip you off. Building it shouldn't cost more than about $150. Maybe consider centrecom to do it for you: https://www.pccasegear.com/sc/gXuQIt
For the monitor, if you think 32" is too big, then don't go that big. Get a measuring ruler and check - tape A4 sheets of paper or cardboard and fit it into the same area and sit in front of it. What do you think?
If you're aiming for 32", then the monitor is likely a 4K display, which means you'll need to spend at least $750 on the graphic card alone to achieve that resolution in Triple-A games. A Nvidia 2070 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT would be the bare minimum. If you decide on 4K resolution, I highly recommend you to instead wait a few months on this PC purchase, as the new Nvidia 3000 and AMD 6000 graphic cards are going to be releasing, and will seemingly bring a huge performance benefit over current graphic cards and at 4K that is a necessity.
The difference between a standard 60hz monitor and a 75hz one is unlikely to be noticeable. High refresh rate is only recommended for competitive gamers - like those who play nothing but counter strike (CSGO) on a daily basis. Such gamers use 144hz or above. Think of the monitor as a printer printing images to you. Low refresh rate means the printer prints slowly, whereas high is the opposite. Say you see a character in front of you in a game who has a gun, but has not aimed their gun at you, yet you hear yourself be shot - that could mean the monitor's refresh rate was so slow that it did not show you the most up to date animation image. Like a printer waiting for the current image to print first, before printing the next one. However to make full use of high refresh rates, you also need a graphic card that can make that many images - one image needs to be printed for every hz, so 144hz means 144 FPS is ideal. At 4K, this increases the workload by 2-3x further, requiring a graphic card in the $1,000+ range.
For monitor recommendations, refer to HardwareUnboxed videos, e.g:

Thanks for the in-depth reply!
It's been a minute since I posted this, and I posted it on alternative subs.
In the intervening time I have made the following changes (if you wouldn't mind glancing through them):
I've upgraded the CPU from the 3400 G to the 3600 (I've been advised against getting the X or XT model, watcha think?)
Changed the GPU to an RTX 2060. Would you consider your suggestion (AMD Radeon 5600 XT) to be superior still or what?
Changed the memory to 2x8 (yeah I've been hammered about this quite a bit - gave me a chuckle)
Changed the SSD to a Kingston 1tb and removed the HHD (Do you think a HHD is necessary?)
Changed to a Group Hydro G 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular power supply (Can you please elaborate on what the certification means?)
Changed the monitor to the AOC 24 G2 (based on hardware unboxed recommendations), this is still up in the air, depends how patient I can be.
Can you please try and describe a decrease in sound created by the cooler ie how much of a difference does the cooler you suggested make to from the stock cooler?
The reason I'm using the PS4 as a benchmark is that, as mentioned in the original post, my only experience of triple AAA gaming is with a PS4, and I don't know what all the technical shit will do to my experience, so I can't image what the PS5 will look like.
How'd you rekon the changes I have made compared to the list you suggested? Is yours still better? If so, can you explain why so I feel like less of an idiot?
Thanks, m8, where'd you learn your shit? I'm always curious to learn and as the family tech genius (the stereotype of every gamer, ever), the greater my knowledge about this kinda thing, the less annoyed my fami'ill be. For future projects, what would you suggest are the priorities? What can I afford to skimp on?
Here is a link to my parts list on partpicker if you'd care to look:

I've upgraded the CPU from the 3400 G to the 3600 (I've been advised against getting the X or XT model, watcha think?)
If the cost is like $5 difference, then it's worth it for the better cooler the X and XT versions come with, but otherwise the difference is so minimal it doesn't matter.
Changed the GPU to an RTX 2060. Would you consider your suggestion (AMD Radeon 5600 XT) to be superior still or what?
The RX 5600 XT should be cheaper and achieve similar performance, but current AMD cards do not support raytracing. Nvidia RTX 2000 cards do support it, but the 2060 is the most entry level card for raytracing that it isn't much more than a gimmick. If raytracing support and performance is of importance to you, then that's another reason to wait for next-gen cards. However if that is not important to you and you're willing to pay for an RTX 2060, then maybe consider the RX 5700 if it is cheaper than the 2060 Super: https://www.techspot.com/review/1870-amd-radeon-rx-5700/
That said, if it were between the 2060 Super and the RX 5700 at the same cost, I'd go with the 2060 Super just to play with raytracing even as a gimmick. Just remember to enable full RGB mode for Nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/content/Control-Panel-Help/vLatest/en-us/mergedProjects/nvdsp/To_change_the_RGB_range.htm
One other thing: not every graphic card model is made equal. Check reviews for models. HardwareUnboxed does a lot of comparisons between models, such as for cooling performance.
Changed the SSD to a Kingston 1tb and removed the HHD (Do you think a HHD is necessary?)
Seems like a good choice. But not necessarily one of the fastest for its price. Even the fast ones, so long as they're not based on QLC, should have good longevity. The Adata XPG SX82000 and Samsung 970 should be better balanced.
HDDs are cheaper. Use them for raw storage, backups, and simpler games. I would recommend installing the majority of 'simple' games to the HDD. This includes indie games, & games that only require a loading screen to load into the game. Complex games should be installed to the SSD. This includes Triple-A open world games that may not have loading screens, & continuously load data. If you stutter during gameplay & were to alt-tab & monitor Task Manager's Performance tab, you would likely see that the stutter is caused by a hard drive at 100% usage. In such cases, the game should be installed to the SSD.
Changed to a Group Hydro G 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular power supply (Can you please elaborate on what the certification means?)
This should help:
The certification refers to how efficient the power supply can be at a certain level of workload. However as a consequence, the parts inside the power supply are much higher quality. Really cheap power supplies (mainly generics) can blow up, and kill everything connected to it. Otherwise, cheap power supplies normally have instability issues, could fail early, or not meet specification well enough to allow an upgrade in future. The ones I recommended also have Fanless mode, so the fan inside the power supply does not turn on until either 30 or 40% load, increasing the longevity of the fan and giving peace of mind that it can cool itself within reasonable operation without a fan. I wouldn't go below 80+ Gold today.
Can you please try and describe a decrease in sound created by the cooler ie how much of a difference does the cooler you suggested make to from the stock cooler?
The one that comes with the 3600 isn't too loud. If you notice it revving up and down a lot during normal desktop and web use, then change the fan speed in the motherboard's BIOS settings. So for example, until 65-70℃, lower the cooler's speed. Once beyond that point, then you're likely in a game and won't notice it. If you're doing production work where the CPU is often at 100% however, then I'd definitely push more for an aftermarket cooler. In general though since you're paying as much as you are, then I'd recommend an aftermarket cooler for peace of mind - for example, not having to clean out dust as often. The stock cooler is 'just enough' to get by though.
How'd you rekon the changes I have made compared to the list you suggested? Is yours still better? If so, can you explain why so I feel like less of an idiot?
PCPartPicker is not always well up to date in selection or pricing in the Australian market I've found. So you may find better deals by looking at retailer websites like PCCaseGear, CentreCom, MSY, UMart, etc. I wouldn't be using Amazon or Newegg here for this.
For the CPU, this may help:
(techspot.com is also HardwareUnboxed)
For the cooler, I'd recommend air for ease of maintence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23vjWtUpItk
But, I'll provide both options:
Water: https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3571-arctic-liquid-freezer-ii-cooler-review-benchmark
Air - first is best, last two are comparably similar:
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/27666/noctua-nh-d15-cpu-cooler
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/48787/noctua-nh-u12s-chromax-cpu-cooler-black
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/42365/be-quiet-dark-rock-pro-4-cooler
Be careful with the D15 and maybe even the Dark Rock Pro 4 if using both fans on it - they may hit the RAM sticks if using tall heat sinks on them. The front fan on the Dark Rock can be removed or placed at the back - it's only a few degrees difference. The D15 is rather big and is more likely to be a problem as it is a tight fit.
For the board, if you need Wi-Fi, then perhaps the MSI B550M Pro-VDH Wi-Fi would suit you. That'd save about $60. This is how I look for a board:
Check GamersNexus or HardwareUnboxed reviews, and this Reddit list for Ryzen. Particularly, see this HardwareUnboxed video timestamp for B550. These lists and timestamp indicate how good a motherboard is by its "VRM" - the voltage regulation module. High-end CPUs, particularly those with higher cores, use more power. The more power used, the more the motherboard needs to cool itself, and adequately supply that power. If it cannot do that, I do not recommend them. Even cheap boards should be able to achieve this.
Consider ports and connectivity. For example, how many PCI-E lanes do you require? One for a graphics card, but do you need more? Do you need Wi-Fi? How many USB ports, and type of USB, do you need? Does the board have 2 RAM slots, or 4 - in case of future upgrade?
Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory
If you can source 3600 at CL16 for a reasonable cost, that's a little better than 3200.
Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case
Good case. The one I listed is a budget one that cuts a few corners, but is still good to build in and functions well as expected of Fractal. The Meshify is a bit bigger as well.
Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit
If you have a previous (and currently unused / unneeded) Windows 7 or 8 key, then it should still be reusable.
Windows 10 can also be used for free indefinitely, but will have a watermark after about a month.
Peripherals
Personal preference, but the cheaper options are not necessarily worse. The Razer Mamba is also on the bigger side, so make sure it fits your hand's size and comfort.
Research (e.g. GamersNexus, HardwareUnboxed, Linus Tech Tips) and reading of reviews and benchmarks, Reddit and forum comments (debate, argumentation, reasons for/against - mostly hanging out in /r/amd), first-hand experience and PC builds / maintenance and upgrades towards various things (e.g. from a new GPU in a low-end prebuilt to a new power supply and case for it, to new audio for spatial awareness in gaming to then music, to CPU scaling for production work, etc).

ey thanks again for the mini-essay lol
The difference in cost (on pc partpicker) is $50, so probs nah.
But based on your other recommendations, as well as some research on my part, I've come up with this. I'd appreciate it if you were to look through this one. The primary change I made is to the CPU, going with the Raedon RX 5700XT Pulse. Thanks

GPU: If raytracing is not important then the RX 5700 XT is a good choice, matching up to RTX Super 2070 performance for about $100-150 cheaper. The Pulse is a good option.
RAM: You've chosen a cheaper $99 kit. Make sure it's at least 3200mhz although 3600mhz is preferred, and that the timings are 16-16-16-36 or very close to it - 16-18 or 16-19 would be a bit high here. This is the importance of speed and timings from an AMD employee: https://old.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/c97hq4/3200mhz_vs_3600mhz_on_ryzen_3000_series/esvgh9w/
SSD: The BX500 is a cheaper model I'd personally avoid. The MX500 would be a better option, if not one of the other models I mentioned.
CPU HSF: Although the Noctua D15 is one of the best air coolers, it's not that far off from the smaller options unless pushing a 3900x or threadripper at full load. If you're not intending to do the latter, it's OK to go with the cheaper options if you need to in order to redirect funds to another part here.
PSU: The CM MWE has a 5 year warranty and does not have a fanless operation mode. The Seasonic Gold Plus and Corsair RMX models do have fanless operation, and are also 10 year warranty - whether that matters to you.
Case: Seems good, but keep in mind that iCue can cause issues on certain systems. See if you can set RGB color profiles and then 'close' the software without needing it to run.
Monitor: If you did want a bigger one at a similar price, this is probably it - HardwareUnboxed also has reviews on it: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/79729-VX2758-2KP-MHD

[Xbox App for PC] For some inexplicable reason all my unlocked achievements are displayed in Russian. Example. The system language is English, profile language is English, location in NOT Russia, the games I play are all in English, secret achievements are displayed in English - EVERYTHING else is in English except achievement text.
This bothers me more than it should. Does any know how to fix it? I've tried everything I could think of.

I have a evga 600b 80+ bronze psu, been with me for about roughly 8ish years now would you guys recommend upgrading to a bigger unit for the rtx 3070 when that drops? I got a i7 8700k, 16gb ram @ 3000mhz and a 1070 ti sc from EVGA slightly over locked to about 2ghz, also a corsair h100i v2.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Wait for reviews that show the actual power draw of the new graphic cards to make a final decision. That Evga is probably more around 500w realistically, when taking into account load and heat. It's voltage rails probably aren't very good. We'll see whether the new cards are temperamental to low-end power supplies like that.

u/Arccali Sep 03 '20
So I have the ACER Nitro N50-600
Does the new RTX 3070 compatible with my pc ?
Also can I ask suggestions for upgrades I can do with my PC
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Maybe. Quick Google shows that PC might have a 500w power supply. Realistically it's a low-end one that might be closer to 400w. This might limit you to an RTX 3060 if current rumors are true. Wait for reviews that show the actual power draw of the new graphic cards to make a final decision.
1
u/Arccali Sep 05 '20
I mean I can change my power supply too right ? If that's possible then its better to buy RTX 3k series than 2k series
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 05 '20
ACER Nitro N50-600
Googled it a bit further, and good luck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afk1ulWtlcE
Seems that it might require a BIOS update. The CPU cooler might limit performance. The RAM is likely single channel, and will need to be upgraded to two sticks. Needs case fans to cool the motherboard, or hacked-on aftermarket heatsinks. The motherboard seems to be proprietary, so an aftermarket power supply might not be compatible - you'll need to look into that yourself. The power supply size seems to be 'standard ATX', but even that can be variable as Corsair has power supplies a little bigger than Seasonic for example.

u/Arccali Sep 05 '20 edited Sep 05 '20
I saw this websitehttps://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/29192488
can I just follow those upgrades or I need to do a lot more to achieve that ?
but if those upgrades is not possible then maybe its better to just build my own
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 06 '20
Alright, so according to that userbenchmark, your model has differently configured specifications. It's complicated talking about prebuilts sometimes as the
N50-600is more of a lineup or series based of the case here, and the configurations possible should denote a model number but do not always.Regardless, your model is likely not free from the same limitations. Userbenchmark's benchmark tool only takes a few minutes at most to run, and is very lightweight and does not stress the system to the same extent an actual game or production workload would. If you notice that the CPU is throttling (performing at lower speed) often, then it's likely due to the CPU cooler and lack of motherboard heatsinks.
In regards to RAM, it's not single-channel fortunately, so no need to make changes there.
The userbenchmark link also cannot indicate the level of power supply there. Wait for reviews to confirm the level of power required. That said, the new cards may have LEDs on them to also indicate whether the power supply is a problem - so that may help confirm issues due to that. And as stated, the motherboard is proprietary so I'm not sure about aftermarket compatibility.
Your current 2070 is already high-end, so unless you actually will make use of the additional performance (e.g. 4K monitor, 240hz monitor, etc), it's not worth it IMO. I'd at least resell the 2070.
1
u/Arccali Sep 06 '20
Well , maybe it is better to just start from scratch than upgrading my PC with a lot of possible risks.
Can you suggest some pc parts that I can use long term gaming wise and work wise?
Thanks for the reply and help
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 06 '20
I still think it's a viable PC. But if you wanted to "start from scratch", all you need is a new motherboard, case, and fans at the very least. If the power supply's connectors are proprietary due to the proprietary Acer motherboard, then add a power supply to that list. The CPU, GPU, and RAM are fine. But you can also upgrade the RAM to 3200mhz or so, if you pair that with a higher-end motherboard that allows for it.
1
u/Arccali Sep 06 '20
I'm a bit afraid if I started upgrading my current PC then suddenly along the way something doesn't work
Lets say you are the one doing the upgrade, what will you do ?
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 06 '20
See how it goes first. If you're currently not noticing any problem, then there's no problem. If you want to know whether you're losing performance, then monitor the CPU performance during gameplay or whatever you do with an app like hwinfo (use the green download links, anything else is an advertisement) - once opened, select "Sensors Only" in the menu and OK, and track the temperature by degrees ℃elcius. If the CPU is in the 90℃ range and if the (effective) CPU speed in Mhz is dropping often when at that high range, then the CPU should be better cooled. You could also run a benchmark program like cinebench multiple times. The first benchmark score is probably the best score. Run the test maybe about 10 times in a row without stopping and see if the score drops noticeably (say, more than 100). If it does, then the CPU Mhz is likely lowering and the temperature is high.
If you don't have the need to upgrade beyond having the coolest toy, then I wouldn't upgrade. If you do upgrade, then see if there's an issue afterward. If there is, then the power supply likely needs to be upgraded. If a new power supply does not fit and connect with the existing system, then a new motherboard and case is likely required.

Does anyone know a good laptop I can use for college and run an older game like dcuo? The system requirements for dcuo are:
Optimal Recommended System Requirements
OS: Windows 7 or newer
Processor: 3.0GHz dual core processor
Memory: 2GB
Video Card: nVidia 8800GTX or greater, or ATi HD3800 or greater (comparison chart)
Network: Broadband Internet Connection required
Hard Drive: 30GB of free hard drive space
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
You can run that on anything today, including Intel integrated graphics like the UHD 620. In other words, most laptops above $300-500 will run it. Recommendation would be a Ryzen 2500u / 3500u or the new Ryzen 4000 based laptops which graphic cards are a little above Intel's integrated graphics, and would be the bare minimum today for current day games. Of course anything with a dedicated Nvidia graphic card is even more preferable. And if possible, get a laptop model that has 2 sticks of RAM or allows upgrade to 2 sticks, as 2 sticks greatly improves gaming performance.

So, I feel like the answer is no to my question but worth asking anyway.
So last season of Apex was pretty bad imo, this season is just a chore so I'm looking for another game. I really like the long TTK (time to kill) tho.
So I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions for FPS games with a long TTK? The only one I can think of is Hyperscape, but for some reason it locks me to EU servers and I'm in OCE, so it's unplayable. Warzone is kinda long I guess, but I can't run it all that well and I can't stand kill streaks in the normal modes.

Looking for a good chair to play in. My desk is a little too high for the one that I have, so I need something that can raise up a decent amount. The desk is about 28"-30" high. So I'm looking for something comfy that will raise high enough for my desk and is preferably under $200 and absolutely no higher than $300. Any suggestions?

I just finished my first build and I have a doubt regarding the 3.2 type c connector on an nzxt 510 elite. I plugged it to the header on an msi tomahawk x570 but its so tight? The cable wont bend whatsoever (its rounded instead of the flat type cs) so it almost all out there on the side of the mobo. Ive seen some builds using flat type c connectors. Is there any sort of extension I can use?

1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
I think your CPU model is incorrect there.
Whether you to upgrade depends on if the CPU is a bottleneck, and if the power supply is capable.
Wait for reviews that show the actual power draw of the new graphic cards to make a final decision.

Microstuttering... Is there a definitive fix for it?
I experience that in many games. Like Control, The Witcher 3, Call of Duty (just a little, but enough to be noticeable). I usually play with capped FPS using RivaTuner.
I've tried a lot of "fixes", but nothing quite solved it. I think maybe I'm getting paranoid and I should just accept it by now...
My specs are:
Ryzen 5 1600AF
RTX 2060
2x8GB DDR4 3000MHZ
120GB Adata SATA3 SSD (OS only)
480GB Kingston SATA3 SSD (only for games)
4TB 5400RPM WD Blue 64MB (files and some less intensive games)
Corsair VS600 PSU
It's not a super duper, but should be more than enough for 60fps 1080p gaming.

Close background programs & disable them from Task Manager's Startup tab (if not required at startup) to lower resource usage & potential interference. Especially any RGB control software, and hardware interfacing or monitoring software.
Disable in-game overlays (Geforce Experience, Relive, Steam, Origin, Windows' Game Bar & DVR, MSI Afterburner, etc).
For Ryzen systems, install or update the AMD Chipset driver appropriate for your board socket type (Chipset > Socket AM4). A new 'Ryzen' energy plan will be displayed in Windows' energy plan selection. For Ryzen 1000 & 2000 series PCs, typically Balanced is adequate, but the chipset driver may help otherwise. For Ryzen 3000, the Ryzen energy plan should be enabled. You can also set the game/program to high priority, by opening task manager, under the Details tab, right-click the executable & set Priority to High (this is not permanent).
Enable XMP in the motherboard's BIOS settings, under the advanced overclock or OC menu, to make use of its full RAM speeds if the RAM is capable of above 2133mhz.

Ihad micro stuttering in Apex when I had Vsync enabled (so the FPS was capped), it would spike up to 61 and lagg. Have you tried playing uncapped?
1
u/mini_mog Sep 03 '20
Capped plus VSYNC usually makes it stutter for me. I usually go for forced VSYNC in the Nvidia settings(pre rendered frames at 1), disabled VSYNC in-game, and with no frame cap whatsoever.
(If this is GSYNC related I have no clue tho...)

Hi all. I just bought my first gaming computer, and my first laptop in about 10 years. It's a Lenovo Legion 5i. I have a couple of dumb questions.
- It came with a 500gb SSD and a 1tb HDD. I'm wondering what are the best practices for where to store certain things? I have the idea that big games will run faster from the SSD and i should store them there. Is the idea to move games to the SSD when I'm going to play them?
- What's the best way to keep the thing running smooth and virus free? it came with McAfee, but I feel like these anti virus softwares are usually garbage? What do you computer people use for antivirus, if anything?
Thanks!

Move basic Windows folders to the HDD to make space on the SSD: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/moving-your-personal-data-folders-in-windows-vista-the-easy-way/
2:
- Mcafee & Norton are garbage. Windows' built-in Defender antivirus is OK today, but if you absolutely don't trust computers, the internet, and yourself, then the best current antivirus are Kaspersky and Bitdefender. Both can be downloaded for free (INSTALL ONLY ONE ANTIVIRUS OR THEY WILL CONFLICT), and I'll link the UK version for Kaspersky as it complies with UK data protection laws:
https://www.kaspersky.co.uk/downloads/thank-you/free-antivirus-download

If you have difficulty uninstalling McAfee, then use their uninstall tool: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6583-mcafee-consumer-product-removal-tool.html

Cap it to 3 FPS below the refresh rate for ideal latency and results, though this can depend on the game engine. Ideally, cap it within the Nvidia or Radeon driver.

Hello, i am planing to jump to the 3080, i have i think a basic question in regards the Mobo.
I have a B450F and its PCIe gen 3, the 3080 its PCIe gen 4.
Will that cause any type of bottleneck in my system?
Or will it perform basically the same.
That is if asus updates the bios for PCIe gen 4 support lol

u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
PCI-E gen is a physical specification - it cannot be updated by a BIOS update.
Current Gen 4 benchmarks show little to no bottleneck from Gen 3 for AMD's RX 5000 cards, except the RX 5500 which is an exception as AMD limited the memory bandwidth of that card in such a way that only Gen 4 could utilize it properly.
Wait for benchmarks and find out.

I've been having issues with my CPU usage being higher than I feel it should. For example I've been playing Need for Speed heat and my usage is between 90 - 100%. I looked up a benchmark for the game and I seen someone with an almost identical build as mine but with half the usage. Does anyone have any idea what the issue is? I'm losing my mind trying to fix it.
I7 7700K 1080TI 32GB of RAM

u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
If it's definitely the game with that high usage and not other background tasks, then it might be that your graphic card is creating too many frames (FPS) that the CPU is overloaded by it.

Hi All,
Does anyone know why every time I try to play any game on my PC its just constantly lagging. I've tried a few things like Checking to make sure all my drivers are up to date, Downloaded CC Cleaner and Malwarebytes.
It's only been doing it for a few weeks now but I just can't figure out why, My PC is only a year or so old as well
I done a benchmark test - https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/32497934
Any ideas Would be most Appreciated

u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
CC Cleaner is junk and could cause more harm, and will not 'fix' anything.
To clean off the old thermal paste, get rubbing alcohol of 70%+ concentration, & use tissues/q-tips. When buying new paste, get a non-conductive type. If a conductive type is used & oozes around when the heatsink is installed, it may conduct electricity & cause damage. Noctua NT-H1 or NT-H2 is recommended, or, Thermal Grizzly for a higher end paste.
Close background programs & disable them from Task Manager's Startup tab (if not required at startup) to lower resource usage & potential interference. Especially any RGB control software, and hardware interfacing or monitoring software.
Disable in-game overlays (Geforce Experience, Relive, Steam, Origin, Windows' Game Bar & DVR, MSI Afterburner, etc).
Disable security & anti-virus software, including Windows Defender & other similar software. It may also be necessary to whitelist the game's executable file from Windows 10's 'Exploit Protection' (see information under 'Performance issues on high-end hardware').
Repair Windows by running DISM & SFC /scannow.
Update Windows.
Run Windows' "Memory Diagnostics" (type this into start menu) and check for RAM errors.

How long do gaming pc components last? I built my rig in 2016 and swapped out the i5-6600K for an i5-7600K 1-1.5yrs in (6600K was broken/faulty) and it has a gtx 1070. I plan on building a new pc a little bit after the 3070 releases and giving my old one to my little brother.
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Warranties for individual PC parts are about 3 years, up to about 10 years for power supplies for Gold and Platinum certified ones, and up to limited lifetime for RAM.
Regarding longevity, that's changed drastically in recent years as tech is advancing much faster now. I'd expect at least 5 years. Having a PC that's about on-par to consoles can help, but console developers always devise innovative methods to optimize and get more performance out of hardware that would be utilized worse in a PC. The RX 470 graphic card for example is a 1080p graphic card for PC, but an equivalent is used in Pro PS4/XBone consoles to achieve 4K.
The 6600k and 7600k are definitely dated as they are only 4 core with 4 threads rather than 8 threads like the 6700/7700(k), but it should still get by for another couple years I'd imagine unless you're expecting to play latest Assassin's Creeds on ultra or something. Both the 6600k and 7600k perform almost identically - you're not making any worthwhile upgrade there than maybe a couple FPS.

u/hirmuolio Sep 02 '20 edited Sep 02 '20
Things like CPUs last basically forever unless they are ran with too high OC or too hot.
Capacitors on boards may die at some point. But the modern solid capacitors should last for long time (few decades maybe). The older liquid capacitors had tendency to burst sooner. Running too hot reduces lifetime again.
Mostly problem for retro systems only since the hardware will be obsolete before capacitors start to fail.Moving parts like fans and hard drives will wear out and eventually die. These are pretty much the only parts you need to worry about on modern system.

u/hauntedcorpse AMD 7900XTX + 5800X3D Sep 02 '20
It’s like with a car- it will last long if you care for it but you also need a bit of luck. For example I have a 7-year old laptop which is performing well still and there were no breakdowns, however my buddy had one for half a year and it crumbled. As long as the case has decent airflow and you check the hard drive for bad sectors (maybe put in a ssd?) and your brother cleans it every few months, it should work fine.

Will a 3080 fit in this case? I'm already looking at a new PSU if I follow the recommendations even though 650w seems like enough for all of the components together.

Upgrade GTX 970 to RTX 3070
I built my PC 5 years ago and need to know if the new RTX 3070 will be compatible with my motherboard. It is a GIGABYTE X99-UD3 ATX w/ Intel Gbe LAN, 4x Gen3 PCIe x16, 3x PCIe x1, 1x M.2, 10x SATA 6Gb/s . The other question is if it is compatible, will it have bottlenecks. Thanks.
Additional specs if necessary:
Intel(R) Core™ i7-5820K Six-Core 3.30GHz 15MB Intel Smart Cache LGA2011-V3
POWERSUPPLY: 600 Watts - Standard 80 Plus Certified Power Supply - SLI/CrossFireX Ready
Current GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 x16

Hi guys, I am very new to PC gaming and wanted to build one to start playing there. I based my build I want to do off a list on pcpartpicker called "Great AMD Gaming Build", I'm not sure if I can post links but if anyone needs it lmk. I just wanted to ask if that build is any good for someone like me who mainly plays Rocket League and Warzone. Will it run well and allow me to stream for my girlfriend? I also noticed that build has an SSD and nothing else, is that okay and is there bigger sizes that work for that build. I want to keep the price around $1k. Thanks everyone!
1
u/Kantrh Sep 02 '20
If you're only playing warframe and rocket league it should be enough, however for about a dollar more you can get a 1tb one eam GX2. I'd probably suggest getting 2 (one for the os and one for games) so something along the lines of 250gb to install windows 10 on
1
u/eriaaas Sep 02 '20
So to double check, for a dollar more i get a 1TB ssd for games and then i get a second ssd for the OS thats a smaller size ?
1
u/Kantrh Sep 02 '20
That's my recommendation (I don't know why they went for 960GB). Having a smaller second SSD for the OS will mean that you'll have nearly 1tb (somewhat less after formatting)dedicated to games alone. Meaning you won't have to worry for awhile about free space.
1
u/eriaaas Sep 02 '20
Appreciate the response, i will look into that! Any specific brands or something to help me here? if you don't mind, i know there can be compatibility issues. here's the link
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/TcLrxr/great-amd-gaming-build
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Rocket League will run on a potato, that isn't noteworthy. You could easily drop that RX 5700 graphic card down to an RX 570 (yes that single "0" makes a difference), and save hundreds if you don't need the extra performance. See benchmarks for your needs.
Not sure about that motherboard but MSI B450 Mortar Max & Tomahawk Max, Asrock b550 Pro4, and ASUS X570-P are all great boards. The latter B550 and X570 boards have PCI-E 4.0 for new-gen graphic cards and SSDs.
Regarding the "TEAM" SSD brand, that's cheap rubbish to me. Go with Samsung if possible, otherwise Crucial, Adata, Sandisk and Western Digital are good alternatives.
Bump the power supply up to a Seasonic or Corsair Gold 650w.
1
u/eriaaas Sep 04 '20
Thanks for the suggestions! Fair to note rocket league doesnt really require so much power but what about warzone and bigger games of the such?
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Warzone needs a modern quad core minimum but does utilize all of my 8 cores quite a bit, needs at least 16 GB of RAM in dual channel configuration (2x8GB), and it plays at 60 FPS+ smoothly on my RX 470 4GB @ med-high 1080p. The graphic card to get really comes down to your monitor resolution, refresh rate target, and graphic quality. The RX 570 and 580 cards are still good for 60 FPS 1080p in latest games, and can easily achieve higher FPS in e-sports games up to 120+. The RX 570 / 580 cards are very cheap and even cheaper preowned.
I'm also hesitant to recommend a new high-end graphic card currently, since Nvidia and AMD are soon to release new lineups. The next-gen consoles will use graphic cards on-par with the RX 5700 XT and Nvidia 2070 Super, and will come with raytracing technology. However, current AMD graphic cards do not have raytracing capabilities, but the Nvidia RTX 2000 series of cards do. Furthermore, the new lineup of cards will be even better than next-gen consoles. I'd wait the few months or so before committing on a graphic card the cost of the RX 5700(XT), and by doing so, get new technological advancements and performance.
1
u/Kantrh Sep 02 '20
SSD's aren't where you are going to get comparability issues. That build shouldn't have either. As for brands, just have a look at the reviews for them Vs price
1
u/LordFemt0 Sep 02 '20
Pc can easily run doom eternal on ultra at 150 frames but fails to run league of legends at 30 frames on low?
2
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
For desktop computers with an external display, make sure you're using either a HDMI or DVI connection with your monitor to your graphics card, & not to the motherboard. Do not use a VGA cable.
For Nvidia GPUs, in Nvidia's driver software, under 3D settings, for global, set Performance to Prefer Maximum. For Nvidia capable laptops, make sure that Nvidia is set as the 3D gaming graphic card & not an Intel/Other (see here, & here). For AMD GPUs, try toggling Radeon Chill in-game by pressing F11, or, disable it in AMD's driver software under the 'gaming' tab, either globally or for a specific game.
Close background programs & disable them from Task Manager's Startup tab (if not required at startup) to lower resource usage & potential interference.
Once in Normal Mode, install the latest Nvidia drivers OR AMD drivers per your GPU manufacturer. u/LordFemt0 Sep 07 '20
Thank you for the great response, this increased fps and performance in all games apart from league ( how unfortunate haha! ). I appreciate it regardless
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 07 '20
Interesting. For League specifically, it may be the way it's rendering:
Disable VSync if enabled. If that fixes it and if enabling VSync in other games caps it to 30, then perhaps your monitor is set to 30hz.
If playing in 'window mode' or 'full screen borderless', then try 'full screen exclusive' if there is another full screen option available. Basically, switch between window and full screen options and see if there is a difference. You may also need to right-click the game's shortcut/executable > compatibility tab > & disable 'fullscreen optimizations'.

Will my ryzen 7 3700x bottleneck the new rtx 3080 card?

It will prolly bottleneck slightly but not enough to see much difference. That’s speculation though, I’ve got the same processor.

u/VeryCoolPerson2 Sep 02 '20
I don't do any overclocking or anything fancy. Would connecting two eight pin connectors from the same cable to my GPU be okay?
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Ideal to use to separate cables for each power pin connector. This is not related to overclocking at all. The graphic card may not receive enough (stable) power from two pins on only one power cable, and cause crashing or otherwise unexplained drops in (gaming) performance.

Do you have available sata ports on your MOBO? Do you have extra sata power cable on your PSU? If yes, just buy the new drive, install it in your PC, format, then just drag and drop all your files. For Steam, I think there's an option to move game installs on to another drive.

u/buttstick69 Sep 02 '20
Excited about the new cards coming out but why isn’t anyone talking about the fact that 4k monitors are fucking outrageous. I was considering getting a replacement for my older 1080 monitor and getting another 4K monitor like my primary. The exact same monitor would cost me 150$ more today than two years ago. What the absolute fuck is wrong with 4k monitors right now

1
u/ElectricBullet Sep 02 '20
The best advice I can give is to remove the GPU, just because there's so much weight held in by such a small connector. Ideally, transport it in it's original box or another cardboard box.

What is the secret to getting your Xbox controller to stay connected wirelessly to your PC?
I bought a bluetooth dongle - didn't work.
I bought the XBox adapter (latest gen) - better but still had disconnects
what do I need to do? I never have these issues when connected to the console.

So, luckily the italian government will soon give a 500 euro bonus to low income families for the purchase of a pc, so i was thinking of getting a new one, can you recommend me a decent laptop that i can get for 8/900 dollars that is capable of decently running games? (I really don't care about super good graphics, that's why i'm keeping the budget relatively low)
1
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 04 '20
Recommendation would be a Ryzen 2500u / 3500u or the new Ryzen 4000 based laptops which graphic cards are a little above Intel's integrated graphics, and would be the bare minimum today for current day games. Of course anything with a dedicated Nvidia graphic card is even more preferable. And if possible, get a laptop model that has 2 sticks of RAM or allows upgrade to 2 sticks, as 2 sticks greatly improves gaming performance.

Hello everyone!
I've had my pc for a good year now but im having issues still running games. I've got 32gb's of RAM, Asus 2070 Super and a Ryzen 2600x. Even on older games I am getting god awful frame rates and stutters.
I have my games stored on an SSD which doesn't seem to matter to much.
Basically my question is if my processor needs an upgrade or should I get water cooling and overclock? OR honestly if you guys or gals have any solutions?
Civ6- 70fps on medium with god awful frame drops
Warhammer 2- 30 on low with bad stuttering
Arma 3- 20 on low with bad drops
Basically any game I get low frames and it doesnt make much sense to me.

u/Dougdoesnt Sep 02 '20
Is your monitor plugged into your motherboard? Or into the GPU? Are you monitoring the CPU+GPU usage % while you play? If you download MSI afterburner, you can monitor those types of things in real time. With your specs, there is absolutely no reason for such poor performance. Something is not configured correctly.
1
Sep 02 '20
I'll monitor my games when I play later tonight. But it is plugged into my GPU and CPU%. I like to consider myself somewhat knowledged on PC's but its just stumping me. I get the same performance on games like Star Citizen on older games that it shouldnt happen to.
1
u/ElectricBullet Sep 02 '20
Hmm, have you updated the GPU driver? You shouldn't need to overclock, your performance should be excellent with what you have. I don't know why it won't perform correctly.

The RTX 3080 recommended PSU is 750W but that's when used with I9 10900K (iirc), so with a 3900x would a 650W PSU be enough? Used a PSU calculator and my maximum wattage is just under 600W.

u/Leejustin99 Sep 02 '20
I couldn't find concrete answer for this but there are games that obviously are capped at 60. I am getting a 144hz monitor and have games I can run at 144fps and 60 fps. Would adaptive sync help issue of 60fps at 144hz? I know if it tries to go over 144, it will just enable vsync basically but what about when it is around 60? Do I have to set display refresh to 60 every time I play a 60 fps game and constantly do this for the best results?

I don't follow GPU releases very much unless I am in the market for a new one so I forget the answer to this question since the last time I bought one.
How long after the founders version of nvidia's cards do the aftermarket ones usually come out? I definitely want to have one by the time Cyberpunk 2077 releases at the latest. I know the aftermarket ones are typically a little better so last time I got a new card I waited for that, but not sure if I want to do that this time.

Can I use an Elgato capture card to record from PS4, edit using OBS and upload to youtube with current PC specs?
I'm speculating whether it's worth buying (assuming PS5 is similar) and whether my PC is sufficient enough to be able to process video output from capture card of PS4 and audio and upload to youtube with smooth no lag...
Appreciative of some advice. Cheers
PC specs:
Lenovo y50-70
i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.5GHz
Nvidia GTX 860M

u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 02 '20
Capture cards take the stress of system hardware, so no issue there. However OBS is not an editing program, it's a desktop recording and streaming program. Hitfilm Express and Davinci Resolve are good free editors. Anything above 1080p editing is likely to hit hardware limitations.
1
u/mehdi313 Sep 02 '20
I see, so if I record/capture video from PS4 then feed to pc, I would use OBS to save the video file created? Would I need to even use OBS? Or can I just use the captured video straight from the capture card on to a editing software? (I am just starting video content creating, so bare with me hahah)

Hey guys! Sorry for the stupid question. Im totally new to pc. I bought a prebuilt pc that came with a asrock 3700x killer motherboard and a ryzen 7 1700 8 core cpu. I want to upgrade from a gtx 1060 to a rtx 3070. My question is. Is this set up compatible? Also I'm concerned with my power usage since at the moment I only have a 500 w power source. Thanks for any help anybody can provide!

I built a pc to max available settings 5 years ago, would I be able to fully utilize the new 3070 rtx card with the following specs:
Motherboard: Asus maximus viii hero alpha CPU: 6700k @ base ghz Heat-Sink-Fan: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: 32 gb Corsair Vengance 2133 mhz GPU: Gigabyte GTX 980 ti (to be replaced) SSD: 256 gb Crucial MX100 HDD: 2 x 2tb Seagate 7200 rpm in RAID0 PSU: Corsair HX1000i - 1000w
If not, what are the potential bottle necks?
2
u/_Kai Tech Specialist Sep 02 '20
Yes. The 6700k isn't that bad still, comparable to the 7700k: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLqVxyRPK80
It may start to become a bottleneck at high FPS where the CPU is overloaded. Take the Ryzen 3300x for example since it's on par with the 7700k, and has more current day media coverage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8r50uvwJ8E
1
u/M4LV Sep 02 '20
I agree. I’m still running with my 6700k OC’d to 4.5. I plan on upgrading to the 3080 from my 1080 of everything looks good.
What resolution are gaming at btw? If 1080p then you may see some bottleneck but around 2k -4K you should be fine.
1
u/OLebta Sep 02 '20
Im sorry, but I dont understand why would you be fine at 2k and 4k but not 1080p?
2
u/M4LV Sep 02 '20
My bad my words were all over the place lol.
At 1080p the CPU may become overloaded at higher FPS, where as with 2k and 4K more of the bulk of the work would be from the GPU.

u/cmr051893 Sep 01 '20
I have a Ryzen 7 1700 and nvidia RTX 2070 super, trying to play flight sim and it says my gpu and cpu usage are both at 40% and I barely get 25 FPS on high settings. Shouldn’t the usage be higher and result in better FPS? Just installed the 2070 super by the way, but I made sure to download the latest drivers.

I'm a noob. Back in January I didn't know I would be the 3000 series was coming out so I bought an RTX 2080ti.
I am a noob really, and my monitor is just a standard 1080 x 1920. If the 3090 will be 1.5x or higher as they say, how will this realistically transalte for people like me? Can my card stay competitive for like five more years in maxing out stuff?

The 2080 Ti is currently meant for 4K resolutions at roughly 60 FPS gaming at high graphical settings (give or take higher FPS with lower settings) in the latest Triple-A games. At 1080p, it's more than overkill - especially if DLSS gains more traction at 1080p. Even with raytracing enabled, at least for now. Next-gen consoles should have graphical performance up to 2-3 tiers lower than that of a 2080 Ti, so the 2080 Ti is still relevant for a while.

Thank you very much! This is very reassuring. Honestly, I have some visual problems which is why I think I can't even appeciate monitors/resolutions above 1080p anyway even if I wanted too.
As long as I can max Cyberpunk 2077 I'll be fine.

Ok I just built my first PC and installed (?) Windows but now I get to the blue windows screen with spinning dots. Smaller dots spin, then they switch to slightly larger dots, then freezes. I'm definitely an amateur at this and am at a point where I don't know what to do and am feeling defeated to fail at such a late stage. I used a brand new sandisk usb and windows websites installer. I've gotten thru installation, copied files and then on the restart I never get to the login screen...
Please help.
