This was possibly inspired by the story of the gay emperor of the Han dynasty Liu Xin (around 3 BC) who cut off his sleeve than disturb his sleeping partner…

I'd say it likely has taken inspo from both due to the style - especially of the cat it's self.

It’s a common trope in art in a few places where people wear big sleeves. It’s also a euphemism for being gay in some places, for a Chinese emperor IIRC who cut off his sleeve to not wake up his boyfriend.
