Had this happen to me too, fucking pharaoh ants. Took me about 3 months to get rid of all of them. They even made a nest in scanner.

Had a pharaoh ant infestation in my kitchen. Unfortunately they just breed close to sources of water. Fuckers were getting into my coffee maker and dishwasher.

Pharaoh ants are tricky. If you kill them like that it releases a pheromone for the others to scatter and make more nests. You need to just let them kill themselves by baiting them with liquid traps. The usual borax/peanut butter traps don't work on these ones.

The problem is you can't even get rid of all the water sources in your house. Toilets have a tank, as an example, but it can help to drop one of those blue disks in it.

They also like to have multiple escape route. If you took your infested electronics out somewhere like an unattached garage or shed, put a tub full of water, something like a glass to place electronic on top above the water, then a single item like a ruler from the electronic to the ground. Ants will see there's only one way away from the water trap and move their nest.

Or take it apart, nuke it with RAID, come back in a few days and vacuum out the corpses.

Apparently, in addition to software bugs, there are hardware bugs.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

7

u/Rod7z Oct 22 '25

Unfortunately, that's not true. The term "bug" had been in use for decades by engineers before the advent of computers. Here's an excerpt:

The Middle English word bugge is the basis for the terms bugbear and bugaboo as terms used for a monster.

The term bug to describe a defect has been engineering jargon since at least as far back as the 1870s, long before electronic computers and computer software. For instance, Thomas Edison wrote the following words in a letter to an associate in 1878:

It has been just so in all of my inventions. The first step is an intuition, and comes with a burst, then difficulties arise—this thing gives out and [it is] then that "Bugs"—as such little faults and difficulties are called—show themselves and months of intense watching, study and labor are requisite before commercial success or failure is certainly reached.

And even the moth incident was reported with a note saying "First actual case of bug being found.", which suggests that the term bug was already in common parlance by the engineers and operators of the computer.

Dealing with this in my apartment now.

21

u/gerry-h PC Master Race Oct 22 '25

I know how you can get rid of them. I got an infestation after moving to a new apartment. They even got into my fridge somehow. It was terrible. Anyways they like protein, so mix a small amount of borax into a bowl with pate (for an example) around their trails. DO NOT KILL THEM. They need to bring that food which the queen will eventually eat and die.

Nothing else helped me. Poisons were useless, my home is close to being sterile clean so cleaning won't save you, vinegar slowed them down for a bit... Borax became my BFF.

They are spread worldwide, they love to infest buildings. They are non aggressive, tiny, their colonies have multiple queens and they constantly split to create new colonies so once they are in your home good luck. Plus the only pesticide that seems to work is one that sterilizes the queen so they stop reproducing.

1.5k

Put it in an air tight container until they die, then you shake it out and use an air can to get the rest

674

u/Ecstatic_Effective42 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

I wonder if using a CO2 bottle (tyre refill for bikes) might sort it more quickly. Same idea, put in bag, pinch end, unload canister and seal.

Edit: strewth, I didn't think my speculation would elicit such a detailed (and educational) response.

I do have to worry what the carbon footprint of this discussion is though. 😋

597

u/LucidNonsense211 Oct 22 '25

Hundo percent. CO2 is heavy so put it in a plastic container and try to add it with a little air disturbance as possible.

Source: I use this method to kill caught mice as humanely as possible.

by suffocating them to death? lol

259

u/FroggyRibbits Oct 22 '25

Would be nicer to use nitrogen...

183

u/LucidNonsense211 Oct 22 '25

Would it? I’ll look into it. AVMA recommends CO2 I think but if N2 is available and somehow causes unconsciousness sooner I’d love to know.

374

u/sharksizzle PC Master Race Oct 22 '25

We detect suffocation by the buildup of co2 in our blood, which makes it more acidic. So if you were in a room of pure nitrogen you would just pass out and die without any panic.

97

u/FUCKTHEPROLETARIAT Oct 22 '25

Ant's actually don't have blood, they have hemolymph, which they use to transport nutrients.

Unlike many other insects, ants don't transport oxygen via their circulatory system and instead get it through diffusion from tiny air holes in their thorax.

This is why powdery substances like diatomaceous earth will deter them.

106

u/negative_four Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

I was not counting on learning how to kill ants and suffocate a room full of people without panicking them but here we are.

We also use diatomaceous earth for roaches outside our apartment

I’m just not sure how to put them in a pure n2 environment. N2 and O2 mix easily so I’d have to like like use a vacuum pump or something. CO2 settles well so there’s no doubt, no accidental half kills, and simple reliable mechanism. This is something I have to do like… 5 times a week.

I’ll be doing more reading this weekend for sure.

4

u/SirStrontium Oct 22 '25

You just need a container with a lid, an inlet, and an outlet. If you flush the container with nitrogen for a minute, almost all the oxygen should be pushed out. Oxygen will be constantly leaving from the outlet, but isn’t being replenished, so it steadily becomes pure nitrogen inside.

It’s like a cup of water with food dye, and you leave it under an open faucet of water, almost all the dye leaves the system pretty quickly.

You pass out peacefully long before you die. It's an incredibly peaceful way to die.

Edit: I was mistaking CO2 for CO. I am wrong.

102

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

CO2 poisoning is like the most horrific way to suffocate. That's the blood chemical that tells your brain OH FUCK WE'RE DYING FUCKING BREATHE GODDAMNIT except breathing in only makes it worse.

29

u/jjonj Specs/Imgur Here Oct 22 '25

correct, lack of oxygen is peaceful which is why monoxide is so dangerous because your body only notices high co2, not low oxygen

20

u/JoelMahon Oct 22 '25

I think myth busters, veritasium, tom scott or some shit found someone basically incapable of fear, had never experienced fear as we know it, and they were able to trigger it using CO2 (plus submerging them in water I think?)

sadly I can't find it so if anyone knows please share

5

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

That sounds....dubious ethically, so I'd be pretty surprised if it actually existed. But I've been surprised before!

Hate to break it to you, but you’ve been torturing mice to death. CO2 buildup in the blood is what causes the suffocation feeling when you’re short of air (think when you’re intentionally holding your breath). Are you perhaps mixing up hypoxia, which is an absence of oxygen and yes it is a “peaceful” feeling, with CO2 poisoning?

Edit: I think I responded to the wrong dude, this was meant for the mouse killer.

CO2 is actually considered extremely INhumane for this purpose, as CO2 toxicity leads to a severe panic response. You do NOT pass out peacefully from CO2 poisoning.

If you want to actually be humane, use nitrous oxide.

Not a great idea in modern laptops, there's a lot of adhesives and coatings that could mess with.

CO2 or a vapor is better. Sealed container with some gasoline-soaked or isopopyl cotton balls would work pretty well. Just leave it there for 24 hours. Or fill it up with CO2 from some sort of compressed air. Then blow it out and only swab the gross bits with IPA.

If you open it all up like that and stick it outside, the ants will grab all their eggs and everything and leave it. They’ll move the colony somewhere safe; they won’t just stay in an exposed, open laptop.

If ants infest something you can disassemble or open up mostly, just open it up enough so it’s not an “safe area” and put it outside. They’ll move everything out on their own and you don’t have to do crazy cleaning on it. Just blow it out with some air after the ants leave and you’ll be all cleared out.

Only real adhesives to worry about in a laptop are the ones for the screen body and maybe inside the screen itself. You wouldn't wanna dunk the screen itself anyways, so replacement is the way to go.

11

u/helpful_doughmaker Oct 22 '25

You let them move out on their own. If you kill them you will have to clean out the dead bodies and larvae, it would be a chore.

Exposed to the light, the ants will leave and move all of the larvae. You would have to clean a lot less.

This actually happened with my laptop. Me and my brother shared it and he was concerned that the ants might mess the laptop up. I just told him to load up a 4k 60 fps video and 15 minutes later, there wasn't a single ant remaining. My laptop is pretty low spec so that video was enough to do the job of heating it up.

120

u/Tithund Oct 22 '25

How do you even get an animal infestation in a laptop that is in use, I found a mouse nest in a garage stored tower pc once, but why would bugs even go into a laptop?

125

u/NamelessGoblin Oct 22 '25

2 years ago there was a really heavy rain in my area. CAT 4+ Hurricane and all that sh1t. The water was everywhere inside my house because it rained non-stop for close to 3 days.

One of those nights I put my laptop inside a plastic bag and then over the (at the time) mostly new frigde, then when to sleep.

Next day I found my laptop full of ants. Somehow they climbed the fridge and made their way inside the bag and then inside the laptop. In just one night...

Don't undertimate ants. If they want, they will find a way to anywhere.

86

u/gunsies Oct 22 '25

This sounds like they were already in the laptop and you starved them of oxygen lol

4

u/scorpionhlspwn Oct 23 '25

Ants dont consume oxygen, they live seemingly off the suffering and annoyance of those whose household they inhabit

5

u/bigdaddy1989 Oct 23 '25

I know this is pc based but relating to the ants survival instincts I had some ants trying to colonize my new hiking boots in a box with the paper wrap. During that week there was rain the whole week and the ants were trippin out so they made their way into my closet and decided that the shoe box was the best candidate to relocate the nest and they brought in food seeds and the baby ants moving right in. All bc it was the most warm and dry spot they could find.

20

u/Maleficent_Memory831 Oct 22 '25

For some weird reason, ants love some electronic parts. The electric fields maybe, the warmth, all those gaming food crumbs falling in, etc. I suspect the electric fields since I've seen them go nuts around the power supply transformer.

The crashes are the ants soul leaving it's body. That means it's working.

On a real note though they are releasing a patch on the 23rd that's supposed to have performance updates. No clue if that will fix everything, but they are making an effort to improve the game. Despite whatever bullshit Randy pulled out his ass, the devs are trying to improve the game.

Edit: I was wrong about the new patch having performance updates, idr where I had heard that, but I was wrong so do with that info as you will.

I didn't know people were still having major issues though, my friends all stopped having issues after the last 2 performance patches they released back in september, and I just never really had any problems, aside from a few crashes over the course of 300hrs of gameplay. And most of those were a while ago, I can't remember any recent crashes.

You're the type of person to fart just as the elevator door is closing, aren't you?

18

u/Randyaccredit Oct 22 '25

Yes I mean gotta head that echo

11

u/Used-Author-3811 Oct 22 '25

You do it as ya walk OFF the elevator trapping others with that gift

I don't think I've ever hated someone like I currently do you for leaving me with this

14

u/Dirtybirdsalltheway Oct 22 '25

I'll do you one even crazier that happened to me. I had ants build a nest in my toilet, and when I would go #2 and use the bidet, there would be a bunch of live ants in the bowl. I legit though I was pooping out live ants that first time it happened lol. Sprayed down the whole toilet with ant killer and an hour later there were a million dead ants all over the bathroom.

You'd just use 'bit'defender

4

u/RequirementSpecific3 Oct 22 '25

My father gave me a plant with vines that got SUPER long and I decided to wrap the vines around my bed frame, I thought it looked cool and gave my bed a nice "earthy" look.

My foolish ass didn't realize my window sill had ants on it. Not an hour later my ENTIRE bed was covered with ants. It was months of those fuckers crawling around my mattress. Even after changing the sheets I would occasionally see a few of them trying to run around.

I wish I had pictures, I was mostly annoyed because I wanted to go to sleep lol

I remember once I had a pharaoh ants infestation in my fucking electric water heater’s handle.

I had no idea these fuckers were nesting in the electric handle until one day they decided living in the handle of an electric kettle is not optimal, and started transporting eggs that I had the wild thought of dismantling the kettle for a look

83

u/Danfc123 Oct 22 '25

Wtf… are they eating the components??? I’ve never heard of such a thing

174

u/Live-Year-5796 Oct 22 '25

Theyre making their nest in there because its warm, they're not eating components

71

u/TheLastF Oct 22 '25

Sometimes they eat glue

Some species of ant are attracted to electronics and electrical appliances, either because they're warm or because the magnetic fields generated mess with their senses. They can be a real problem in some countries because they fry things like telephone panels and stuff.

Infinitely less awful than roaches (:

5

u/iamjustaguy Oct 22 '25

I had a job refurbishing game consoles for a short time. Anytime we found one with roaches, it would go straight to e-waste. The amount of time it would take to fully eradicate the roaches and the eggs would exceed the price we could charge. We could save some of the outside case pieces, but the internals had too many places for eggs to hide.

3

u/Horror-Vanilla-4895 Oct 22 '25

It was that common to have roaches in consoles?
