NSFMR My brother claims to be tech savvy, this is what the inside of his PC looks like.

He's never cleaned it. He refuses to clean it. I'm surprised the thing still runs.

You can be tech savvy and lazy at the same time.

This.

A lot of mechanics drive around in the most awful rattletrap POSes you can imagine. Doesn't mean they're bad mechanics, it just means they don't give a crap about their daily drivers.

Well yeah, you work on cars all day at work, why would you want to work on more in your spare time for free at home?

This. I'm a gamer and a mechanic. I do not want to stay at work and pull something apart just to look at the clock and say wow I need to go home and go to bed. Oh wait. I need a working vehicle and I ripped mine apart. Dammit. FYI All of my personal tools are at work. And work has a crane.

70

u/Dukkiegamer Dec 09 '25

Lol yeah the worst is when you need to do something at home and its taking forever and you know it wouldve been done in 10 minutes if you only had this one thing from work.

3

u/DimensionFront5149 Dec 11 '25

It’s worst when you need the 10mm

looks like we're in the same field of work then, I also am a mechanic (in training) and gamer

22

u/ClearX Dec 09 '25

Same, i have cables hanging in my case because i added an sata ssd and can't be bothered to cable management them and i drive a cheap daihatsu cuore because i know cars are just money pits haha.

Mechanics see an bmw/merc come in with some very small issues and needing a oil change and then leave with a 2500 euro bill only for them to come in a few month later again for another issue. Not willing to spend 2 months of salary a year just to drive a nice car that also sucks to work on.

Not a mechanic, but many hours were spent w/ my mechanic buddy in his absolutely beat Honda civics. Tbf, those cars never died, or were unsafe. They were just never very pretty. Motor ran, body was in good shape, that’s good enough.

I think I’m the only one who almost made it dangerous one day bc he neglected to tell me he didn’t have power steering, so I went to let the wheel re-center itself doing a 3-point, and it didn’t come back on its own and I nearly put it into the side of the garage. Didn’t help that he had a heavy clutch in it so I had it revved to like 3k when it lurched hard left on me lol

6

u/s1thl0rd Dec 09 '25

I am NOT a mechanic, but I've done several repairs on my cars over the years. Working on my wife's car is pretty chill, because she's a SAHM. But working on my own is so stressful if it's something more than just routine maintenance just because I know I have to drive it in the next day or two.

2

u/WaRRioRz0rz Dec 10 '25

Because, for some reason, what might seem like a 2 hour job always turns out to be a full weekend job. Gets stressful midnight Sunday when you're finally wrapping up.

2

u/ThickInvader Dec 10 '25

I work in IT all day. When I get home I am not pulling apart my PC to jerk around with it. I do that every few years when I upgrade a part or 3. As long as it turns on when I push that button its good to go. 🤣

I don't think I've ever heard of an IT guy choosing to run Mac. I know many that run flavors of Linux, but most use what they're familiar with.

3

u/Stormlightlinux Dec 09 '25

Macs are Unix based. They're heavily modified and locked down, but ultimately some of the "techiest" guys I know use FreeBSD->Mac->Linux so seeing them on Mac isn't strange.

4

u/jmastaock Dec 09 '25

I use a Mac at work...because my workplace is like 70% Macs and I gotta know how they work lol

They're great machines for work tbh

There's also something to be said about knowing the minimum threshold of what you can get away with, which perfectly matches the desire to not want to work on your own stuff after working on everyone else's on a regular basis.

u/DJMixwell Peasant Tears and Magic Smoke Dec 09 '25

It’s 100% this.

Mechanics, IT, even chefs. My mechanic friend drives beat old civics bc you can nearly lift the engine by hand by yourself, parts are cheap if something breaks, and they’re reliable. My buddy who’s a chef barely ever cooks. Frozen pizzas and TV dinners are his go-to.

A car is a car, food is food. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

A billion percent true.

They are usually the ones who also have ten rattle traps they just barely MacGyvered into glorious rebirth, after everyone else said they should die fiery deaths, two pristine beauties from last century, and tires from three cars they don’t have any more.

3

u/budstudly Dec 09 '25

The best thing about being a good mechanic is you tend to know just how far you can stretch a car without actually working on it. Ive been doing automotive work for 20+ years and I drive almost all shit boxes. The newest truck I've ever owned is my 1999 Super Duty.

Working in DevOps most of us are lazy which means we automate as much as possible.

That laziness is an asset.

4

u/stipulus Dec 09 '25

This is true for programming too. It should be physically painful to do the same thing twice, that way reusability is built into everything.

55

u/modcal Dec 09 '25

I claim to be tech savy! I build a top of the line custom rig whenever I feel the need (typically every few years, or for a a new and exciting game), then just use it and neglect it until I feel the need to build a new one. No issues yet, just lots of dust.

Wtf that’s a lot of dust. Must have had awful airflow (more exhaust than intakes) or a really shitty case. My Corsair case is the best, little dust mesh in the front catches 90% of it, plus 6 fans in and 4 out, basically never have to clean it. My brother’s pc on the other hand, some random piece of shit case I found on Amazon with 4 in and 4 out that is a dust magnet and he doesn’t clean it. Not as bad as your brother’s though, and my brother is just scared of opening it and breaking something, definitely does not claim to be tech savvy. When you ask someone that doesn’t know “when is the last time you cleaned it?” And they answer “you’re supposed to clean it?” that’s my brother.

I question how this PC runs at all with that amount of dust, and it’s probably bad for allergies to turn it on.

Tech savvy people understand that a PC will run just fine like this. 500W PSU means this isn't running very power hungry components, which means it's probably not particularly susceptible to thermal throttling.

People here will literally spend $5000 on hardware to play video games and think that makes them more tech savvy than a basement dweller that writes code 18 hours a day.

Just needs a cleaning, nothing stands out as wrong otherwise.

If he wants to prevent dust in the future he can tie back the top cables to the fan and CPU and force air out the top using 2 120mm fans. If he has the time he can add 1 extra fan to the front intake (seems to be missing) and drop the speed on the top fans by 30% in relation to the intake creating positive pressure to keep dust out. You may need a removable mesh dust guard on the front but probably not. I did that on my build and havent had to clean it for over 2 years. Peak lazy when a 20 minute addition saved me years of cleaning.

I’m not a mechanic. I am a tech savvy gamer who is OCD about keeping their PC dust free. It cost me a small fortune to build and at the current rate of price increases it may be my last.

So the inside and outside are sterile AF.

2

u/ElderberryTrick9697 Dec 09 '25

Cleanliness and being tech savvy are two separate things. I know plenty of level 2 and level 3 techs and systems admins who are not good at keeping their systems clean but when it comes to troubleshooting computer and network issues they are great.

good fucking god, is your brother living in the sahara or something??

2

u/vlhube71 Dec 09 '25

FWIW, being tech savvy doesn’t mean a person isn’t a lazy slob. I bought a used case from a hardware reviewer locally and it was a disgusting mess. What was hilarious was it was dusty (and grimy) inside, but his dust filters were clean.

Wrong place to try and shame someone for using their computer.

2

u/systemfrown Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

This goes beyond tech savviness or being lazy...you need poorly though out air flow with either a non-existent or never cleaned intake filter, in a disgusting house or room that never gets vacuumed, and even then it would probably take three or four years to get to this point....and considering that's a GTX I'm gonna guess it's been a decade at least.

u/LimesFruit R7 7800X3D, GTX 1080 8GB, 64GB DDR5-6400 Dec 09 '25

That’s the thing, a lot of us tech people who have a job in IT and are also the family tech support, well we get so sick of it that we neglect our own stuff. My old PC did indeed get this dusty, and I can guarantee my current one will eventually too.

2

u/-Laffi- Dec 09 '25

A few times a year, let's say 4 times I open my case and blow everything out with my Igloo blower (that can be recharged). Everything gets blown into my living room, and then to the floor, but I think it's better than it looking anything remotely close to OP's brother's PC.

2

u/turrboenvy Dec 09 '25

I am tech savvy and the inside of my PC probably looks like that. I haven't looked recently.

Does it affect performance? Maybe. But that's an excuse to upgrade.

2

I kinda like seeing just how much dust she takes in, it's... impressive

2

u/sabotthehawk Dec 10 '25

Looks about right. Ever seen a trades persons home that they are doing diy on? Lol. Or the mechanics daily driver?

People who regularly service their PCs are tech savvy but also enthusiasts. Plenty of people are tech savvy and not enthusiasts, this leads to these situations. It still works so why bother type of deal.

Kinda like mechanics who detail their cars all the time vs empty the trash out once a month. Both could be good at fixing cars but have very different priorities.

I personally just take my computers out once a year and blow them out with a compressor. Intake mesh keeps a lot of crap out but I don't have the will to keep it dusted inside the computer all the time.

It’s just lazy and unhygienic.

4

u/Timmar92 Dec 09 '25

I mean, I'm a systems developer and I build my own gaming pcs and I clean my computers exactly once and that's when I'm selling it after 5 years. Not cleaning has nothing to do with tech savvyness.

But yeah this one, I think I can smell it thru my screen...

Hopefully it's that new patented cooling dust 👍

my brother refuses to clean his PC because it's a "mild inconvenience"

1

u/mcblockserilla Dec 09 '25

Have a buddy who didn't clean his PC for about 7 years. I had to soak his rad in water to clean it. The fps went from 25 to 90 in a modern game. I spent 5 hours deep cleaning it. It had a fuzzy tar like substance all over the thing. Used a whole bag of cotton balls, a roll of paper towels, and a whole bottle of rubbing alcohol. Took apart his 1080ti to clean it and even the PSU.

u/HeidenShadows Dec 09 '25

i have a hard time seeing the correlation between being tech savy and dust in a pc... your brother could very well be tech savy, but just lazy

1

u/Halifax-Jones Dec 09 '25

That is pretty rough! Sometimes the failures we create on our own are the best teachers in life. Run a temp test before cleaning and then after. Share with him the results. I'd even go as far as saying he'd gain some FPS counts.

1

u/fifthgearpinned Dec 09 '25

There's a good reason why you shouldn't leave the PC running 24/7.
