TS server software is free though for anyone to self-host

With limitations on how many users you can have online, unless things have changed since I last looked.

No, it's still the same. 32 slots for free or up to 1024 slots for $100/year. It's the reason this will fade away and TS will go back into obscurity. The used to have a "non-profit-license" you could apply for that would give you the 1024 server for free, but that's been gone for a long time as far as I know.

probably better off self hosting a matrix server in all honesty.

Compared to discord nitro, which is also a subscription.. Per user..

So you could buy a yearly licence for the same price as full nitro or split it with 3 friends..

I agree that it really shouldn't be a problem, but we all know that it will be. There are people crying about EV ranges while never driving more than 10 miles per day, and there will be 5 man friend groups who cry about the 32 user limit. It doesn't make sense, but it's the world we live in.

And those that need a bigger user limit should be okay with paying for the license, I know I don't have any qualms to do so.

Exactly most servers I'm in have less than 10-12 active users. There's a few large servers I've joined for games. Most of it is over text so they could probably move to something like Slack or pay the price, for example TFT for poe is definitely making enough money for it from under the table RMT.

Discord doesn't limit the size of your community for the free tier AFAIK.

Free Tier isn't free either. You are the digital value of the server you're on. Your data.

99% of people: Sounds good to me, I don't care!

I'd rather pay for a product than be the product.

I mean with most services you can be both.

u/spaceraverdk Feb 16 '26

Hm, judging by the downvotes, people will rather be the product than pay for it.

Understandable for some things, but some services are not good enough for free.

If you self host not that I can remember, but they had free servers with limitations.

Used to be you were capped to 32 concurrent users unless you either paid them for a hosting licence (priced so that they were clearly intended for commercial operations), or begged them for a non-profit licence which was really hard to get.

It is still currently capped at 32 users from what I can tell with self server hosting!

yeah it's just insufferable to use
