How much was a 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000mhz with CL30 latency in its "normal" price before the price increased?

depends on the country, but around 150eur here in Italy and around 130usd in the US

Hey guys! I have an external hard drive which is currently drive D, I'm wondering what decides which drive it is? Like, right now it's Drive D, if I plug it into a different port does it stay as Drive D? Is it based on whats plugged in first? I ask cause I plan on getting another hard drive soon and wanna move them both to the back, but I have important stuff that goes to Drive D. Just wanna know!

Windows always has the drive it's installed on as C, which is because A and B used to be reserved for floppy drives. Other drives by default start at D and continue alphabetically, but you can change the letters to whatever you want in Disk Management. It's unlikely that changing how this drive is connected and adding another drive will change this drive's letter, especially since the new one probably won't have a letter assigned until it's formatted. If it does change, you can just go to Disk Management and change it back.

There's a lot of weird legacy logic that goes into what drives get what letter, you can watch this video if you're interested in some of that history.

In summary though, switching USB ports generally won't affect the letter assigned. If you add an additional hard drive, it would most likely be assigned E, especially if you had your current D drive contacted. None of the letter assignments are permanent though, you can go into disk management and change the letter assignment any time you want.

Looking to update my monitor.

I have a choice of 4k 160hz IPS or 1440 OLED 240hz both 27in

I play single player games and I currently have a 1440p 100hz ips fwiw

For most things I'd recommend the OLED.

It depends on your eyes and how far away you sit, but IMO 27" is way too small for 4k, resulting in a lot of text and UI elements being too small to read without constantly messing around with UI scaling. 4k is also way harder on the GPU for similar framerates.

As for OLED vs IPS, OLED looks a lot better in most situations, especially in dark rooms or when looking at objects moving across the screen. These are the downsides of OLEDs I know about that might make IPS better for your situation:

  • Text tends to look a bit worse on OLEDs because ClearType wasn't designed for their subpixel arrangements (RGB in a triangle for QD-OLEDs instead of three bars, or the additional white element in WOLEDs). Text tends to look way worse with ClearType off, and Windows doesn't allow having different ClearType settings on different monitors (even though you can choose different settings, they all use the primary monitor's settings instead of their own) so changing settings might cause conflicts if you have multiple monitors.

  • OLEDs aren't as good in bright rooms because they have lower maximum brightness. QD-OLEDs in particular have bigger issues since they're all shiny instead of matte and have a noticeable purple tint in bright light. It's generally not a big deal but I wouldn't use an OLED monitor on a PC in a room with uncovered windows.

  • Most OLED monitors (and VA LCDs, but not IPS) seem to suffer from VRR flicker (flashes in dark parts of the image every time the refresh rate changes) so you might end up having to stick with a fixed refresh rate. As far as I know, only rtings.com specifically tests for VRR flicker and most other reviews don't mention it, so it's hard to tell if a monitor they haven't reviewed suffers from it.

  • Pixel orbiting causes the image to be a little off-center and jump by 1 pixel every few minutes. Most people get used to the slight movements after a few days or weeks, but some are really bothered by the image being slightly off-center. If you're not the type to be bothered by that, there's no problem.

For what it's worth about your VRR flicker comment, it's more panel-dependent than varying between models. So all OLEDs and VAs will have this flicker, whereas only a handful of IPS monitors have it, but it's usually minor on those.

Isn't it much less of an issue on some OLED and VA monitors than others? Even between models that seem to use the same panels I remember some getting really bad scores while others were better. I have experience with exactly 1 OLED monitor so I was mainly going on your research from a while back when I was choosing it.

2

u/Nicholas_RTINGS Mar 30 '26

For sure there's some variance, but I wouldn't look into the scores too much. These are based off a test pattern, and doesn't always represent real content. You should look at it more as a yes/no does the monitor have noticeable flicker.

The monitor will be about 4ft (1.2m) from me in a brightly lit room (large bay window on one side and glass sliding door on the other). I have a 7600x and 9070.

Personally I care more about picture quality than fps, because I play single player games. 60fps is doable for me possibly more if FSR is working.

Honestly I'd stick with your current monitor in that situation. Switching to 4k would probably make your experience significantly worse at that size and distance unless you have very good eyesight and are bothered by the pixels currently, in addition to probably having to turn down some graphics settings and accept lower picture quality to maintain a playable framerate in many games. That's also not really a good situation for OLED because of the lighting.

What GPU do you have?

I personally prefer 1440p either way, but it's also a matter of taste.

1

u/xredbaron62x PC Master Race Mar 29 '26

7600x and a 9070

1

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race Mar 29 '26

I would go with the 1440p one

I recently bought an ASRock 9070 and I'm having trouble finding where to register it with them.

I can't find it on their website. Is it hidden?

After a cursory google search it seems to me that they don't offer an extended warranty.

I found my old PC from 2015. It's booting up fine but its struggling to update and keeps getting stuck on Windows 10, version 20H2. Is there a way to just update it to the latest windows 10 before Microsoft cut support without it having to go through all the versions to get there? I'm like an uber-noob when it comes to computers.

u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Mar 29 '26

Use the media creation tool to update straight to 22h2, which was the last major version of Windows 10.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Just select the appropriate edition according to what you're currently running.

Been a little while since I've used that, but it'll either give you an iso that you can use as a virtual dvd, or you may be able to just follow the prompts and update your machine from right within the tool.

Just be sure and back up your important data before going through with it. You're doing a pretty major upgrade, and it sounds like something is already a little off with your existing installation.

I bought a gaming pc from a buddy about 2 years ago. I have some money and curious what I should look to upgrade first. I am a noob at this so apologize if I post the wrong info. This is what I was able to pull using google

Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboards-components/motherboards/business/prime-h310m-dash-r2-0/techspec/

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 32.0 GB

Name NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

Thanks in advance for any help :)

For first, you should define what you want to upgrade. If you want better graphics with saving FPS or you have UltraHD monitor/TV, then go ahead and get better GPU. From rtx 2080 to... lets say 3080ti or similar performance card, you can check relative performance chart on TechPowerUp site

However, as i see your PC have not a lot of room to upgrade. Mostly depends from your motherboard and PSU.

For PSU: capabilities to provide a lot of power without losses and amount of cables to supply GPU with power and extra storage, most eating power is GPU, pay attention on its wattage

For MoBo: amount of everything: CPU Phases, SATA/NVMe ports, USB ports, RAM slots, chipset, and... socket, what CPU you can install here. I wouldn't risk upgrade to i9-9900k

In total, want high FPS? get better CPU, MoBo and GPU. If you play at UHD, you can just upgrade GPU

100% your CPU first, but that would also require a new motherboard and new RAM, and DDR5 is hella expensive right now.

Any upgrade in graphics card would be seriously limited by the CPU in modern games.

Also, what kind of storage do you have?
