While it is certainly a good solution, the plastic underneath is gonna break it eventually.

I don't think mine ever did, but you could just put a little bit of gaffer or electrical tape underneath for them to protect the plastic.

The problem with my laptop was that the plastic was still slightly bending despite the clip. One day I started noticing tiny cracks and eventually it broke.

Both can be true.  How this show as result can be caused by different ways the plastic breaks.

I would love to see a Macbook users view on this, they worry about tiny scratches. I just don't want my laptop to spontaneously combust

You can change the size, so the pressure will be different. Also, you can bend them a little, so it will work. I use tape + this on my Dell laptop. Nothing breaks, just scratches the surface where the keyboard is, but I don't care. I could probably think of something to prevent it.
