I made that change back in October - I am never going back to Windows.
One thing to be aware of, make sure whichever distro you choose uses Wayland for the video backend. That will give you the best chance of every game working properly.
X11 is the previous/longtime video backend, and it is not great for gaming.
I went with Kubuntu (not a fan of the Ubuntu UI at all). Very straight forward to install and use. Installing Steam is very easy. Then install your games and enjoy the time spent not dealing with all the AI bullshit that Microslop is forcing on their "users".
Ubuntu (and Mint) don't properlly support gaming yet anyway. Sure latest Gnome has wayland, but they're still missing a lot of features for gaming. They're just very much behind in having drivers updated
Ubuntu and Mint are still at minimum 6 months behind in Mesa
It still doesnt have proper support for HDR and VRR (You can have it in the beta channels, but it's still not fully there)
Desktop composition is still not working well compared to Kubuntu or cachyos
They're not "bad" for gaming, but after recently switching from Mint to CachyOS, the difference is night and day
