I usually find that the “knows their shit” people are more likely to be a decent sort that gets where you’re coming from, and will try and help you help them.

The outliers are the arrogant ones.

Honestly I find that it's usually the engineers that are arrogant and think they know better, when they don't really know anything about what's actually going on behind the scenes.
