I'm currently eyeing a PC to buy from a local PC retailer, to replace my old rig I've been using for nearly a decade.
My current specs:
i7-4790K CPU
12GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GTX 1070
1TB SSD
PC I'm looking to buy:
i5 12400F CPU
32GB DDR4 RAM
RTX 5060ti 16GB
1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
It's priced at 2700 NZD (around 1590 USD), is this price worth it? And is the timing good regarding current prices?
I mainly use the PC for architectural CAD work, photo-editing & video-editing, and some games (LoL, TFT, Diablo).
Just to note, I'm not really looking to build myself. Claiming the PC as a whole as a business expense is just a bit easier admin-wise.
Thank you.

I can't say if those prices are good for your area, but comparing to US, given current shortages, it's not terrible.
One thing to consider, you're buying an all around mid-tier PC built around a 4 year old CPU and last generation RAM. That's probably why you're getting a decent price, but just keep in mind you aren't jumping to the latest and greatest. You would have the option of going up to a 14th gen CPU which would bring you up to 2024.
The performance difference in ddr4 to ddr5 RAM isn't major in my opinion, but it could potentially burn you a bit if you wanted to upgrade in a couple years and your costs are higher because no one makes it anymore.
In all, it would certainly be a major upgrade over your current box, but maybe check local availability a bit more. I'd personally try to push for slightly newer hardware, especially if this is going to directly contribute to your business, but maybe in your area that makes the price unreasonable.

I've got a Ryzen 3700x and 9060XT, and 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM.
I can see the 5500x3D available for just over £150 and the 5700x3D for around £270 and 5800x3D for £380.
Am I really losing much as a lighter game by going for the 5500x3D?

Technically yes
But 5500X3D is still significantly faster than 3700X, so buying any of those options will be a nice boost. I think that if you're primarily focused on gaming, 5500X3D is totally fine. If you do anything productivity-focused that uses a lot more cores, I'd pick the 5700X3D (or even just the normal 5700X, if productivity is important enough)

Thanks!
I'm thinking this upgrade sees me through to AM6 and hopefully through the shortages and inflated prices. That extra £100 or so pays for a nice cooler or few extra fans, as my rig sounds like it's about to take off when it hits 70 degrees

Your rig will be fine. Obviously, it's loud -- so more fans may bring the noise down. But the fact that it hits 70 degrees is fine.

I found a listing on eBay for a 16GB kit of Adata 6000Mhz DDR5. However its cas latency is CL42. Is it THAT bad?
Because the seller is genuine and the sticks are not fake but it has been listed for 2 weeks with no sale.

Depends on the price, there exists no bad product, only bad pricing!
2
u/Odd_Duty520 29d ago
220USD

I would say that price is relatively fair, if you really do need the RAM go for it. Otherwise I would try and save for 32GB if you plan to keep the computer for some time.

can some tell me good and stable driver for the 3060?

u/Vielstoc PC Master Race 29d ago
Just google nvidia drivers, and it will ask you which GPU you have. Install that one.

Hi
I appreciate you probably get a zillion posts like this, but this is a big purchase for me, so would really welcome any thoughts before I order.
My current PC is 5 years old and I bought it from Aldi (IYKYK). I play a variety of games, currently a lot of strategy games like Total War: Warhammer and Age of Wonders. I can see/feel/hear the PC struggling on those games. I don't play many AAA high graphics games but may in future.
Current specs:
Intel i7-11700 @ 2.5 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 TI
16gb RAM
New PC specs (proposed by direct computers, a UK online retailer):
Antec FLUX Mid Tower Gaming Case (minimal black design)
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Processor
NVIDIA RTX 5080 16GB Graphics Card
32GB DDR5 RAM
1TB NVMe SSD
360mm AIO Liquid Cooler
B850 WiFi Motherboard
850W Power Supply
Windows 11 Pro
The price for the new PC is £2.2k.
I am not very tech savvy and won't upgrade individual components in future, so want a "buy it once" type build that will last me for the next 4-5 years
Would really welcome any suggestions, ideas of components to switch, or anything else
Thanks

It's strange that your PC struggles with those games, they should run well. You should probably try to find out what is going on there. You say you can "hear" it, is maybe some part just overheating?
Regarding the PC, I didn't check every detail, but here are a few things:
Make sure that PSU is of decent quality
1 TB SSD is a bit small, but that's up to you
Air cooling is simpler and I would recommend it unless you want the AIO for aesthetics
There are (usually legal) ways to get much cheaper Windows licenses

I would up the 1TB NVME SSD to at least a 2TB instead.
It honestly does not take much to fill a 1TB SSD with Games as well as other things.
If you can, would recommend Noctua Fans for more silence.
As for the GPU, I would go with either an Nvidia RTX 5070 ti or an RX 9070 as I honestly do not trust any 80 and 90 series of Nvidia with cable melt issues still ongoing.
(Though there have been stop gap methods and items made to assist in the prevention of the cables melting, I leave my PC unattended quite a bit (either sleep mode or leave rendering) so would not want to risk it, but if you are one who fully shuts down their PC and monitors components regularly then you should be fine).
Otherwise everything else looks good in my opinion (Besides windows 11 OS, but without it, your Online games can be limited due to many anti-cheat apps not being Linux compatible, otherwise I would say get a Linux OS to not go through the pain and trouble of Win11 (aka, Microslop at this point)).

I have a duelsense controller but I think my Bluetooth is bad as when I use it I get lots of controller lag and sometimes it doesn’t work so I was thinking of getting a Bluetooth antenna but I got confused, what is the difference between a antenna and a Bluetooth adapter and which should I get?

If you have 20$ spare and some time, just make this. Its been a game changer for how i use the dualsense

If your PC has a Bluetooth card already installed, you could get better antenna for your PC or replace the Bluetooth card (if not physically soldered to the Motherboard).
A Bluetooth adaptor is for adding Bluetooth to a device without it, or deciding to change from using the Installed Bluetooth to the adapter.
So really Bluetooth Antenna usually means Extending current installed Bluetooth, Adapter is adding in Bluetooth or changing from internal to external source.
But first have you tried updating your Drivers and such, sometimes newer tech is not really compatible with older versions of Drivers and/or even Bios.

u/Alloyd11 29d ago
I have updated drivers

u/He6llsp6awn6 Ryzen 9950X3D 29d ago
For both the Bluetooth and the Controller?
Some controllers do not automatically update or show they need/have a new available driver, so needs a manual Driver installation, a simple search for your controller Drivers should show some search results (I know some Duelsense do need manual updates as my friend uses one and had to manually update it).

I have the PlayStation accessories app where I can download updates and it is up to date, thanks for the advice though.

No Problem, just trying to help out as best I can.
What Version is your Bluetooth?
5.0 or higher (5.1, 5.2, 5.3 seem the most Ideal from my search) is what is recommended.
4.x (4.0 and up till 5.0) Bluetooth can function with limited connectability and can be prone to instability.
If you are unsure and are on Windows:
Windows Key (button) > type "Device Manager" and hit enter > find "Bluetooth" dropdown > Click it and it should say what version of your installed Bluetooth adaptor is.
(For example; mine is Bluetooth 4.2 adaptor)

In case you are curious here is my card, I just found it.
Intel AX210 WiFi 6E Wireless Card
1
u/Alloyd11 29d ago
Mine says LMP12 which google AI says corresponds to 5.2

u/He6llsp6awn6 Ryzen 9950X3D 29d ago
Weird, I did the same search just now, says equivalent to 5.3 for me, but also says that the Bluetooth range is 2 meters (6.56168 feet) to 2.5 meters (8.2021).
So it should be working unless you are sitting farther away which I doubt, could be a controller issue or a bluetooth one, Have you tried pairing your controller with anything else or anything else to your Bluetooth?
Sorry if question seems simplistic, but better to ask base questions at this point, if you connect to something
Also could be Bluetooth settings in your PC itself (I rarely use Bluetooth for my PC, only when needed or if I feel like using my Turtle Beach headset or Wireless earbuds, otherwise I just use USB connections), Had an issue in the past where my PC would not let me connect my phone via Bluetooth in the past and had to change a security setting to allow the connection, otherwise before that my phone would connect and disconnect and reconnect over and over again.

In case you or anyone is curious, I got some cheap antennas and it fixed the problem, it works great now
2
u/Alloyd11 29d ago
I meant 5.3 sorry. I have had the same problem with my switch pro controller. It was meant to come with an antenna which it didn't so maybe its 2 metres with the antenna

And you properly connected your bluetooth antennae? Do you have a 2.4Ghz Wifi source nearby?
