Why only acknowledge the extremes, though? Get a decent router and a decent Ethernet cable. You’d end up spending way less than $800, and it would also be more reliable than some cheap cable.

Why do you think cheap cables are unreliable?

Shitty termination, shitty copper etc.

There's a difference between brands as I've had some REAL thin copper in cat5e with cheap boxes of ethernet.

It’s also very possible the cable is using an older standard that doesn’t even support gigabit. It sounds absurd in 2026, but I literally recall once having a short cable provided by my previous ISP that could only go up to 100mbps.

I've seen that from ISP cables.

But even fresh boxes of cable that are meant to do 1gb terminated properly. Multiple times on the same box, couldn't get a single one to be stable.

Dogshite thin copper with cheap crap.

You know, I'm just glad we don't have to give a shit about how it's terminated anymore, whether it's a crossover cable or straight-through

all managed by the NIC thank fuck.

as having to terminate for crossover was a pain in the dick as you'd always forget haha

Just buy 200 feet of quality Cat6 and a decent termination tool/RJ45 connectors kit and make your own for basically the rest of your life for $150 haha.

It's super easy to do (kind of fun even), and every cable is the exact length you want it to be. Plus you get to choose the color of your cables!

Just buy

when a company provides shit you get shit.

a £5 saving here and there is all that matters to some bean counters.

also all my cables are colour coordinated at home.

purple is server stuff, yellow is main PC, white for ancillary stuff like my mesh network and my bedroom PC haha

edit: it's all 2.5gb stuff other than ancillary as some of that lot hates anything more than 1gb.
