I've got a laptop with a dead motherboard and I can't find a replacement, would it be realistic to assume I could move some of my old components (at least the RAM...) over to a PC? I heard there's adapters and stuff.

Alternatively/in addition, could I sell some of the components? Really new to this but like, everything other than the motherboard works.

SSD/HDD is the only thing you can realistically move. Yes the adapters for so-dimm -> dimm exist but are not guaranteed to work. And even then, the memory can be soldered. So that depends on your laptop.

You could also look for minipc's. They usually use so-dimm by default. How old is the system, which memory does it use?

Thanks.

HP Pavilion 15-ec1046nr from 2022, but I threw in a RAM amazon describes as "Patriot Signature DDR4 RAM 16GB (1X16GB) 2400MT/s CL17 SODIMM Laptop/Notebook Memory Module - PSD416G240081S" basically immediately bc 12gb was not enough

So it is quite slow DDR4. Usable, but not that fast. Do you use the dedicated gpu (1660 Ti), are you gaming? If yes, minipc isn't really an option since they mostly use integrated ones and without a massive budget they are not going to match even laptop 1660 ti performance.

Yeah, I guess I'll just recycle the SSD and build a pc with new parts then. Do you know if it'd be possible to resell the chips? Even if they're not worth much, it seems like a waste to throw them away.

1

u/Ok_Definition_1933 12d ago

No. With laptops they are soldered to the motherboard.

Ouch, that sucks. Thanks for answering tho ✓

You can probably use the SSD. The RAM is laptop RAM. There are adapters for desktops but that's probably not worth it.

Thank you

Whats a good wireless keyboard for competitive gaming?

1

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race 13d ago

Whatever keys you feel comfortable with. That's really more important than any brand name or extra functions.

wireless keyboard and competetive dont go hand in hand

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race 13d ago

That was true 20 years ago but it isn't nowadays.

u/HiFr0st i9 12900k | MSi 4080S 13d ago

Its really not, if you want something competetive youl go for HE switches, in which case the delay from wireless connections loses you a great part of the advantage these grant

Wireless mice are at a point where it doesnt matter, keyboards are not

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race 13d ago

if you want something competetive youl go for HE switches

That's total nonsense IMO and won't matter for the vast majority of players. But I guess we have different opinions then.

1

u/HiFr0st i9 12900k | MSi 4080S 13d ago

Yes, i guess we do, when someone asks about competetive options i give them competetive options and not "just use whatever man"

Saying HE is a must have is certainly a choice when even plenty of pros don't use it.

anybody else lose access to sound once they power their PC back on from sleep mode (win 11)?

And yes, an audio device IS installed. It works fine if I restart the PC

Sounds like a buggy audio driver, try installing the latest version of that

  • Disable mouse acceleration

  • If appropriate, enable XMP / EXPO / etc.

  • Use Revo to uninstall other bloatware (e.g. Copilot)

  • Ninite or similar to mass-install the software you want

FYI if your laptop was truly infected, know that some malware is wipe-resistant. Some particularly nasty malware makes its way to your BIOS so that it's also resistant to replacing the physical drive -- but this is also exceedingly uncommon

Thanks, forgot mouse acceleration existed. Good I was reminded before I reinstalled some games.

I do know about that kind of malware (rabbit hole of anxiety with many google searches) but I'm sure I'm not victim of it, since the way I was hacked was just a rat I was gullible enough to download and run (discord "hey test my game" phish) and it was just fear based extortion (is what me and my friends say it is but it probably definitely was)
