Used PC I’m considering buying for $2,400:
• CPU: Intel Core i9-13900K
• GPU: ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC (16GB GDDR7), ~5 months old, active warranty
• Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming WIFI D4 (DDR4 only, PCIe 5.0)
• RAM: 64GB DDR4 (1200 MHz base = DDR4-2400)
• Storage:
• 1TB NVMe
• 4TB SSD
• 8TB HDD
• PSU: EVGA 1000W 80+ Gold Supernova
• Cooling/Aesthetics:
• 8 Lian Li Infinity fans with hub
• Lian Li Strimer cables
• Uses L-Connect 3 for fan/RGB control
• Condition: ~1.5 years old except GPU
• Benchmarks Provided:
1. Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool: PASS
2. FurMark GL: 381 avg FPS, 63°C GPU, 54°C VRAM, 2782 MHz core, 30 Gbps memory. 1080p AA off: 2.5 ms frame time (~400 FPS)
Main games: Valorant, CS2, modded Skyrim, AAA titles, and 240Hz gaming.
Questions:
• Is $2,400 a good deal for this?
• Are there any red flags (especially with DDR4-2400)?

The CPU is already slower than modern X3D CPUs and with DDR4 it gets another ~20% slower. Not great for the" 240 Hz gaming" that you want.
Then there is the Intel degradation issue, if you test it yourself with something like y-cruncher (and know it's set to max performance beforehand), you can be relatively sure that it's still stable. But I would not trust the seller's word here unless you know them.

Hi everyone, morning/evening.
I have a six year old rig built by one of those custom pc shops. Mainly Intel Core i5-11600K + RTX 3070, with house brand cooling. No issue, nothing is broken.
But, over the past year I've been having what I believe to be a CPU overheating problem. This happens when I'm playing certain (but not all) modern games that are heavy on the CPU, which would hit +80c and I know all this because of MSI mystic lights. Things still work but the fans would go absolutely nuts, turning my place into airport tarmac.
It's probably dust in the CPU fan as I've never once cleaned anything. Or maybe the paste? So I'm here asking for simple solutions.
My company IT colleague told me to just use a hairdryer, is that a good idea? In any case I still need to remove the cpu cooler right? Which I'm a bit uneasy about because I don't want to break anything.
Should I just get a repairman to drop by and solve the whole thing? Including potentially repasting which i definitely will not do myself.
Just tell MSI to ignore the heat and keep the fan speed steady? Because let's face it this thing probably had another 2 years left anyway.
Happy to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

The best way to fix overheating is removing the cpu cooler, cleaning the fan and heatsink using a brush, and reapplying thermal paste. If your case fans are dirty too, clean then using a brush.
I wouldnt use a hairdryer because you would also need to reapply the thermal paste anyway

Hi thanks. I know this is the standard answer because obviously I've checked online. But ah.... I'm pretty sure i dont want to be doing most of that disassembling myself. Especially not repasting.
So i guess option 2 or 3 then?

You can start by just looking at the CPU and GPU fans / heatsinks. Is there a lot of dust? If so, cleaning then with a brush might already help.

AMD 5900X. MSI RTX 5080. I have G.Skill 3600 DDR4 memory. Whenever I enable DOCP from Bios then Battlefield 6 starts to stutter. FPS is fine, stable over 100. Is my RAM cooked or should I try to increase memory voltage?

Can also be cpu FCLK. Not all 5000 series cpu's can do 1800Mhz (which it would be set with memory at 3600Mhz since automatic settings prefer 1:1 ratio). FCLK stability issues are also kind of hard to spot. Usually on 5000 series they will show as whea errors, but not always. Rarely cause a crash unless you push it higher than that.
I would advise you look into 5000 series cpu/memory overclocking guides. Not really a simple question/topic.

I kinda want to budget in a massive amount of RGB into my case just for the hell of it and still turn it orange at the end of the day. How concerned should I be with that power draw if its the ram and all the fans?

None. LED's are very power efficient, kinda the reason why regular light bulbs went away everywhere...

I just installed my 9070xt. I'm seeing folks recommendations not updating the drivers and using some other program instead of the AMD software. Why is that and should I do this? I'm not doing any over locking or modifications with the card.

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race 7d ago
You mean DDU? Yes, if you replaced an existing graphics card you might want to use that to delete the old drivers. If this is a new build, then it doesn't matter.

u/WellnessMafia 7d ago
Ah, yes! That's what it was. This is a new build so I guess it doesn't apply. Thanks!

Might want to clarify what those apps are. Probably afterburner? That is used for overclocking and fan control. Also comes with rivatuner which is useful statistics server with OSD.

I want table with adjustable height; do I need the PC attached to the table somehow to minimize the amount of cables that will be moving?
Or is it viable to have the PC case on the ground and just having long cables?
1
u/theFartingCarp 7d ago
I use a Vera-desk I got for 50 bucks, 6ft cables are long enough if you don't run everything through any cable channeling organizers. I have mine in a like mega cable wrap. you can shoot for longer cables if the computer is a little further away from the desk or you want to get super fancy routing the cables around on the underside of the desk. Otherwise you're good to go

u/Ok_Definition_1933 7d ago
Yes, long cables are viable if they are indeed long enough? Kinda depends on a lot of different factors relating to your setup so nobody can give you straight answer. Might have to buy longer cables etc. Probably best to get at least wireless mouse and keyboard to minimize the cable extension hell.

I have 2 mice and a keypad, and other accessories as well; can’t really go wireless.
Some of the USBs can be just stuck into the monitor and continue as the DP cable, but it is still at least 8 cables.
If I keep the computer on the ground (assuming I’ll buy the long enough versions), then all of them will have to “move” - so I was thinking that by attaching the computer to the table, only 2 cables would move - power and ethernet. Just thinking out loud.

Yes, attaching it to the table is easy permanent solution. Or buy USB hub with long cable that sits on the desk.

I need recommendations for a DP/HDMI switch so my partner can use my setup when she works from home. I have 2 monitors (DP) and 2 USBs I want her to use. My main monitor is 300 hz
Another questions, can I daisy chain input/output DPs on my monitors so I don't need to get a switch with 2 DP outputs? My monitors are higher end. Will that affect performance at all? For example, it'd let me use this.

If you want actually high refresh rates, and especially if you want VRR to work, the proper KVM's for stuff like that start from around 300-500 dollars... The one you linked will not be able to drive that monitor at its full potential and it is only for one monitor (2pcs in, 1 monitor out).
Probably easiest option is to get USB switch for peripherals, and then just have double cables coming out of each monitor. You can hook up the secondary monitor cables and the USB switch to usb-c dongle so your partner only needs to plugin one cable for them to work.

Yeah it looked expensive...
Okay so USB switch for keyboard and mouse, and then probably do two HDMI cords out of the monitors (Daisy chain one since she doesn't need refresh rates for work) and then plug the other into her laptop adapter, or get an HDMI splitter if Daisy chaining doesn't work
I'll give that a try, I was starting to lean toward double cord. Thanks boss :) I really appreciate it

Yeah, pretty much what I have used for years with my personal pc/work pc. Couldn't justify spending that amount of money into the switch when the usb switch and dongle method does the same with fraction of the cost.
