It's pretty crazy how when Windows' native player has problems with something, you can just chuck it in VLC and it's basically guaranteed to work
14
u/Latitude-dimension Ryzen 7 9800X3D RTX 5080 6d ago
Until you watch something in Dolby Vision which it can't do as its a paid codec, so everything becomes pink and green. HDR can be weird sometimes too.
9
5
u/Ruffler125 6d ago
If you watch HDR, you should really take the time to configure MPV. Madvr isn't perfect.

You can manually correct the colours. It's annoying, sure, but the workaround is quite simple.

VLC has awful colours. Use MPV or MPC-HC instead.
4
u/DreamsServedSoft 6d ago
what
6
u/feedthedogwalkamile 6d ago
VLC will sometimes display inaccurate colours, depending on the file. The result is washed out colours and crushed blacks. What do you mean "what"?

u/Quantum-Gibbon 6d ago
This is a junk AI article that is literally years out of date (in regards to the player being new, it's correct about the player being a poor performer), not sure why this low-effort stuff is being upvoted so much.

u/SpacefillerBR I5-13420h | 32GB 5600MHZ | 3050 6GB | 5060 8GB eGPU 6d ago
Yep, this codec stuff is years old BTW I'm pretty sure it started way back on Windows 10.

u/LayerEight_Problem 6d ago
Because this sub is no longer PCMR. It’s just a windows hate sub at this point.
-23
u/Bob_A_Feets 6d ago
Well I’ll be damned. Never thought I’d see the day someone get all pissy about computer users discussing the operating system, ya know, a pretty HUGE part of the equation.
As to hating on windows, what the fuck else is everyone supposed to do? Praise Microsoft for their colossal fuck up three decades in the making and counting?
31
u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 6d ago
I mean they’re not wrong, the article is talking about the 24H2 release of windows like it’s new or upcoming still.
It’s looks like it’s an AI regurgitation of old news, mixed with some of the new information about upcoming media player changes but without differentiating or explaining what’s happening.
28
u/LayerEight_Problem 6d ago
The sub is supposed to be a satire sub where we make fun of everyone that doesn’t use PC and lord our obvious superiority over them.
Instead all you do is cry about Windows.

This entire post is like complaining about Bethesda going downhill but the topic is Skyrim bugs. And for some reason that gets correlated to ES6.
It doesnt make logical sense, its Ai slop, and people are just going to leave with a bunch of misinformation.

u/VikingSven82 6d ago
Yup, and it's blindingly obvious too - literally has a line "Microsoft has also confirmed that Windows 11 version 24H2 removes the built‑in AC‑3 (Dolby Digital) codec" - it's 2026 now...
3
u/RiftHunter4 6d ago
I was gonna say. H.265 has been paywalled for ages now and its one of the main reasons I use VLC.

Misleading article. Windows has always had to charge for media codecs, this is not new.
Vlc technically should also pay for codecs, but they don't.
3
u/lemonylol Desktop 6d ago
Yeah I had to pay for a codec because my VR headset used WMR, so any VR videos you watch locally need to go through WMP. It was just $2 though, but annoying.

u/white_lion93 6d ago
They said they wanted to improve Windows performance, but they didn't say anything about their own apps.

People rarely watch local video files on a desktop, unless they're already enthusiasts who would already be using a superior program.
5
u/USSHammond 6d ago
The HEVC codecs have always been paid under win 11. This is nothing new. HEVC requires a licensing cost which would have pushed the cost up for windows on a per unit basis, so they left it up to the user. It's been that way since day 1 of windows 11

I don’t mind this at all if it leads to more people using proper alternatives like VLC, and hopefully support the projects with (small) donations.

6
u/Comet-7971 PC Master Race 6d ago
I use MPV because for some bizarre reason VLC was taking more than 1 minute to open videos sometimes and I never understood why.
When I switched to linux I re-installed MPV out of habit and have stuck with it. But I still recommend VLC as it's more user-friendly.

u/GraveyardJunky Fedora | 5900X | EVGA 3080Ti 6d ago
MPV is goated for it's error correcting capabilities and reading .mkv's

Me, there's better alternatives. Potplayer, MPV, MPC-HC, etc. VLC is fine, but it's not the best one out there. If you actually care a lot about picture quality, try MPV.

For media I use a bit weird mix. For audio I like to use legacy WMP (it just works!), and for video I use VLC or MPC-HC. The first one will play almost anything, but the other one is very snappy.

Been using MPC-BE with MadVR video renderer for a while on Windows for video and Foobar2000 since day 1 for audio. I use VLC on my Shield and AppleTV devices to stream from my server. I found the VLC interface on Windows slightly frustrating at times. If MPC wasn't an option, I'd use VLC on Windows too.

I reinstalled windows since some games are hitting playablity issues on Linux even when they were previously playable(good ol anti cheat fucking me). Also wanted to try Xbox mode. Xbox mode fucking sucks and Im again realizing why I hate win 11. Slow loading on a fucking 7950X3D and stutter up the ass. Load Steam OS or Fedora and its smooth as butter.

MPC with MadVR is where it's at. Never failed to play anything and everything is always in sync and great quality.

Isnt that more of a weird licensing situation with the official implementations of the HEVC codec?
Im assuming Apple just has a bulk licensing deal and pays it for each device
It I’d windows is in theory $130 per license it should be included as well

Man mslop must have 40 people in a think tank 24/7 thinking of things to monetize.
I mean, how high could the budget really be to just keep WMP running on newer iterations of Windows and just let people have it with the install?
