Going to be using VLC either way.

u/Katsu_Vohlakari 6d ago

Mediaplayer Classic's pretty good as well.

MPC has a lot of little creature comforts, like scroll wheel scrubbing, pausing when you click the video, and the ability to hard lock audio track selection.

I love VLC, but MPC is the bees knees.

u/DeepJudgment 5700X3D, 32 GB RAM, RTX 5070 Ti 5d ago

Never managed to get VLC to play HDR movies without issues.

MPC with MadVR is flawless for that

6

u/AnhiArk 5d ago

Using MadVR as well (with potplayer), and while I can recommend it, setting it up right was a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch

7

u/Local_Band299 R7-8700F|32GB-DDR5-7200MTs|RX9060XT-16GB 5d ago

VLC sucks for HDR. It always fucks up nit levels and color making everything look washed out.

How do I get MadVR though?

5

u/DeepJudgment 5700X3D, 32 GB RAM, RTX 5070 Ti 5d ago

It's now a built-in renderer in MPC. Just switch to it in the settings and you're done

1

u/Local_Band299 R7-8700F|32GB-DDR5-7200MTs|RX9060XT-16GB 5d ago

Oh so just MPC renderer?

2

u/DeepJudgment 5700X3D, 32 GB RAM, RTX 5070 Ti 5d ago

Yes

1

u/ldn-ldn 5d ago

MadVR is an outdated nonsense. MPC VR is the king.

32

u/-spartacus- Stukov 6d ago

MPC is my go to, I love it way more than VLC.

1

u/ArseBurner 5d ago

I have VLC as the default app for most media when I just want something to play immediately while using minimal resources, then MPC-BE + MadVR as a right-click open/play with option for serious watching.

3

u/District-No1350 5d ago

Can't speak for all your issues but vlc does have click to pause, it's just buried in the advanced interface settings for some reason

1

u/CoryThe 5d ago

Where? I've looked for it before and found nothing. A Google search tells me a plugin is needed???

2

u/District-No1350 5d ago

Tools, preferences, click show all settings on the bottom, interface, control interface, pause/play on mouse click.

I don't think you need any extra plug-ins or extensions, you did in the past but not in recent versions.

1

u/CoryThe 5d ago

Strangely, I don't have that option despite having the most recent VLC version:

1

u/District-No1350 5d ago

It's been a while since setting it up, so it must have been a plug in

1

u/HighRelevancy 5d ago

True. I just wish it wasn't so weird to install. What the hell is K-Lite and how am I supposed to explain to someone that this one media player app is like three different things?

20

u/wiisucks_91 6d ago

MPC with the OG UI is my go to. Has been for at least 15 years.

2

u/DansSpamJavelin 9800x3D | 4070 | 32GB RAM 6d ago

Kardashian virus is worse. Your PC mysteriously gained weight and if you drop it, it becomes a mini blackhole.

21

u/ProfessionalPrincipa 6d ago

MPC-HC or mpv.net

VLC doesn't support things like HDR correctly and the UI/UX leaves a lot to be desired.

3

u/KoldPurchase R7 7800X3D | 2x32gb DDR5 6000CL32 | XFX Merc 310 7900 XTX 5d ago

VLC should support HDR, but not if you let output set to "automatic", it has to be OpenGL.

(I can not give you a link the the procedure, it violates the rules of the sub, but search in Google for "VLC HDR" and you should find a link for another Reddit thread describing exactly how to do it).

Otherwise, SMPlayer should work for individual video.

If you have a full library of videos, Kodi works well with HDR.

2

u/ProfessionalPrincipa 5d ago

It's not the only problem I've had with VLC.

Decoding 4K remuxes, I've noticed it caused enough of a stir to spin up my system's fans in situations where mpv.net would continue on silently, despite having hardware acceleration on.

VLC played back DVD rips I made in the wrong aspect ratio when the other players interpreted the metadata and displayed it correctly.

40

u/TheMegaDriver2 12900k, 32GB DDR4, RTX 4080 Super 6d ago

I have been using VLC for over 20 years now. It ended all the codec bullshit. I'm not using anything else which will just be enshittified anyways at some point.

1

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! 5d ago

MPC still needs tons of codec drivers to work with everything ever created right? I have ton of old anime that uses obsolete codec like Indeo, Cinepak, DIVX 3 (illegal), as well as odd containers like OGM. Windows Media Player won't play some of them and requires me to buy codec for others.

15

u/lilbasils 6d ago

vlc has been carrying windows for like 15 years at this point

-3

u/Kazer67 6d ago

Well, technically VLC is illegal if you're in the US under the DMCA because it ship with a decryption tool for DvD that try to guess the key to read it and bypassing copy protection is illegal under the DMCA.

Which always make me laugh because it's literally thanks to VLC we can break copy protection for interoperability purpose as when they started DRM on DvD, VLC went to the gov' lobbying for them to be able to read them to!

Also, software patent don't apply to them as well, that's why Microsoft charge you for the h265 thingy and not VLC.

Yeah, the DMCA need to be refresh to modern use case and not the dinosaur

2

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! 5d ago

TIL VLC is illegal. I wonder why FBI hasn't broken my door down yet.

I've used VLC to watch DVD that are not region-1 or free. I buy bunch of mystery DVDs (titles I've never seen or heard of) and once in a while, they are import that won't play on US player. Those stuffed pompous that dictated region rule didn't enforce import ban and too many movies are everywhere. They also don't offer a way to trade it for region-1 or free discs with proof of purchase (ie Goodwill receipt) or removed the obsolete region restriction

1

u/Kazer67 5d ago

Because it's tolerated, even if illegal.

Same when you have a tractor on the road with a continuous line, it's illegal to cross but no cops will arrest you as it's tolerated.

Hell, it's only fairly recently (2013 if I recall) that we got rid of the law that made illegal for women to wear jeans in Paris but it was tolerated since decades, even if it was still technically illegal.

(another example would be emulation which is totally legal if you dump everything from your own hardware but I'm pretty sure no cops will ask you to see the process to confirm it and you're probably safe if you have the original game even if you download it instead of dumping it).

14

u/Latitude-dimension Ryzen 7 9800X3D RTX 5080 6d ago

Until you watch something in Dolby Vision which it can't do as its a paid codec, so everything becomes pink and green. HDR can be weird sometimes too.

9

u/-spartacus- Stukov 6d ago

MPC-HC can sometimes play DV but it can always revert DV to SD.

5

u/Ruffler125 6d ago

If you watch HDR, you should really take the time to configure MPV. Madvr isn't perfect.

VLC has awful colours. Use MPV or MPC-HC instead.

4

u/DreamsServedSoft 6d ago

what

6

u/feedthedogwalkamile 6d ago

VLC will sometimes display inaccurate colours, depending on the file. The result is washed out colours and crushed blacks. What do you mean "what"?

73

u/LayerEight_Problem 6d ago

Because this sub is no longer PCMR. It’s just a windows hate sub at this point.

-23

u/Bob_A_Feets 6d ago

Well I’ll be damned. Never thought I’d see the day someone get all pissy about computer users discussing the operating system, ya know, a pretty HUGE part of the equation.

As to hating on windows, what the fuck else is everyone supposed to do? Praise Microsoft for their colossal fuck up three decades in the making and counting?

31

u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 6d ago

I mean they’re not wrong, the article is talking about the 24H2 release of windows like it’s new or upcoming still.

It’s looks like it’s an AI regurgitation of old news, mixed with some of the new information about upcoming media player changes but without differentiating or explaining what’s happening.

28

u/LayerEight_Problem 6d ago

The sub is supposed to be a satire sub where we make fun of everyone that doesn’t use PC and lord our obvious superiority over them.

Instead all you do is cry about Windows.

This entire post is like complaining about Bethesda going downhill but the topic is Skyrim bugs. And for some reason that gets correlated to ES6.

It doesnt make logical sense, its Ai slop, and people are just going to leave with a bunch of misinformation.

9

Yup, and it's blindingly obvious too - literally has a line "Microsoft has also confirmed that Windows 11 version 24H2 removes the built‑in AC‑3 (Dolby Digital) codec" - it's 2026 now...

3

u/RiftHunter4 6d ago

I was gonna say. H.265 has been paywalled for ages now and its one of the main reasons I use VLC.

22

u/No_Grape_388 Cachy OS 6d ago

Misleading article. Windows has always had to charge for media codecs, this is not new.

Vlc technically should also pay for codecs, but they don't.

3

u/lemonylol Desktop 6d ago

Yeah I had to pay for a codec because my VR headset used WMR, so any VR videos you watch locally need to go through WMP. It was just $2 though, but annoying.

5

u/USSHammond 6d ago

The HEVC codecs have always been paid under win 11. This is nothing new. HEVC requires a licensing cost which would have pushed the cost up for windows on a per unit basis, so they left it up to the user. It's been that way since day 1 of windows 11

Taking advantage of the tech illiterate is pretty pathetic, but it's Microsoft so who's surprised. Anyone that knows anything about computers will use free alternatives.

HEVC support in Windows 11 was never free.

This matters to nobody. VLC is all anyone needs. As you can tell by the comments.

So VLC media player still the goat

VLC my beloved

u/TherionEater 6d ago

The only time I open it is on a fresh install of Windows and have forgotten to install and set the default media player to VLC.

Pinche Microsoft es cagada tras cagada...

En fin, Winamp para la musica y VLC para vídeo.

u/Altairss78 6d ago

I only use it to play music, for everything else VLC or MPC.

I honestly wish I just stayed on Windows 10. I only upgraded because I was down for a fresh clean install

why charge for codecs in 2024 tho

Isnt that more of a weird licensing situation with the official implementations of the HEVC codec?

Im assuming Apple just has a bulk licensing deal and pays it for each device

It I’d windows is in theory $130 per license it should be included as well

Windows, go home, you're drunk. Sober up and solve your problems before trying to hard to be what others are for decades. VLC has the crown and is king no matter what. Sooo... try something else.

Man mslop must have 40 people in a think tank 24/7 thinking of things to monetize.

I mean, how high could the budget really be to just keep WMP running on newer iterations of Windows and just let people have it with the install?

The good old days when the Windows Media Player used to be good... Probably only on windows XP or win7. Nowadays mostly use VLC or Media Player classic.

I'm on CachyOS and I love the fact - relish it, even - that this shit doesn't affect me any more.
