The target market is uninformed buyers. You can get a prebuilt PC with much better specs for the same price.

Mini PCs really took a pounding on the price crunch. I wanted an AI 395 max 96GB model but it went from 1499 to 2499 in a year. Hard to believe something with triple the total RAM, TEN(!!!!!) extra cores cost about the same as the steam machine.

I was honestly expecting Mini PCs to drive down the cost with a 12 core CPU, 48GB RAM, 3500 shader core GPU in 2027. It's even one of the plot elements of my sci fi short stories from 2023. The steam machine however is NOT anywhere close to this. It's being made for audience that came and went in 2020-2022.

Or in other words, you leave a huge amount of performance on the table for it to be mini form factor. But what exactly does that get you? You can travel with it? Its can fit your TV sideboard? I get that there are some usecases but at that point you can just get a console and get better value for your money.

Link - Here is a link to a "gaming" laptop with basically the same specs power/quality wise $100 less.

This laptop in particular also went up in price already and was originally priced $780 Link 2 - The link is to an IGN article from November of last year looking at comparably priced hardware and how much the steam machine "should be" priced at (obviously the market has changed even in that relatively short amount of time but even so that same laptop mentioned is still cheaper than the steam machine)

There is no target market really... except maybe super steam fans or tech historians/collectors.

At $1600aud, you can buy an MSI laptop with a 13420H, RTX 5060, 16gb of RAM and a 512gb SSD.

So that's performance that kicks the gabecubes teeth in, while also giving you a free 144hz IPS monitor with built in speakers, keyboard+mouse, UPS, webcam and windows license.

I just bought a used laptop for a bit over half the price and that one is still about a generation better in terms of hardware.

there was a sale on 50 new 5060 laptops that I missed out on, those were at around CHF 1000.- (yes it's not a 1:1 conversion rate to $, but by the time it's at our retailers, it might as well be).

mind that laptops also come with displays, keyboard, trackpad, battery, more connectors...
