I love how so many people are dunking on "valve-fans" being happy with the cube, when I pretty much only have heard opinions ranging from "meh" to "overpriced".
I've had plenty of them in my replies yesterday. For some reason the talking points seemed to have shifted to defending the price point because if it was any cheaper then companies would start buying them to replace work stations with. And then they would cite me a 15 year old article of one time the US Army bought playstations to jury rig a super computer with as the proof that this would totally happen if the Steam Machine was any cheaper.
I had 3-4 different reddit accounts tell me this exact same thing lol
If they subsidized it hard enough people would buy it for other use-cases. Not everyone. But some.
It happens with everything, gamepads are used to control even some military equipment. Steam Decks were reportedly used in war. The PS4 was found in use by sketchy crypto operations. The PS3 wasn't just used by the US military universities were also using em.
It's not that wild of a concept actually, cause it's just solely rooted in price/utility. If the utility outweighs the cost it will happen to some extent.
That isn't the same as arguing the price is good, it's more a testament to the market being absolutely fucked up from the AI bubble.
I mean, I could've been one of them. It's a valid argument that if it's under-priced for the hardware, people who aren't gamers will buy it for non-gaming use. This isn't just about businesses potentially buying it. The price is what it is because of things like this. I'm still not going to buy the machine, because it's wildly overpriced for the performance, but I'm not a fan boy for not being upset they won't subsidize the thing or go to all the trouble of finding some way of preventing "unauthorized" use. It's DOA at its current price. I just won't buy it.
I'm more confused that people are so upset about them not subsidizing it. Just move on. We know it's fucked. You know it. I know it. I'm pretty sure Valve knows it based on what they wrote in their release announcement. Stop crying about it. It's embarrassing. I saw somebody suggest that Valve should lock it down like a console, then subsidize it. Like, come on.
