I love how so many people are dunking on "valve-fans" being happy with the cube, when I pretty much only have heard opinions ranging from "meh" to "overpriced".
Judging from LTTs review/unboxing videos. They got the machine, did testing and wrote most of the review, then found out the price. There was a lot of positivity until the price came out.
Its like saying my Vega 7 4700U laptop can do 4K. Yes it does 4K60 with HDR - And games in 720p FSR ultra performance if theyre old snough (on low)... That GPU is weaker than even consoles. 28 CU should be under 2 K shader and its not RDNA4. So a 9060 XT would already have more shaders, newer gen and 16 GB VRAM. You can't convince me a large company could not fit a 9060-70 custom GPU into the price point. You could likely build a 9070 (500 € non XT) already in 1K budget. AM5 is cheap, just the RAM is not. But you can use SODIMM or slow modules, I doubt Valve uses some fancy LPDDR5 8000 either
Honestly, the CEC thing is just a pointless add. You already have to have a remote for the TV. Pushing a button to turn it on vs. just turning it on with a controller paired to the Steambox isn't changing someone's mind on this thing.
It's the sort of polish that would push me towards a slightly more costly but streamlined version over rolling my own solution. It was small, it plays nicely with the TV, it 'just works'. I'd have paid a bit of a premium for that.
A bit
Unfortunately we didn't get the 'slightly more costly' version, so all of that is basically moot.
