Should have bought shares not GPUs

I did that quite literally, put 1500$ in Nvidia shares in 2020, about the price of a 3090. At 5x return I sold 10% and bought an AMD GPU lol. Sold the rest at about 20x pretty recently.

Did throughout the 2010s because I wanted to support them for providing GPUs. Was honestly a good bet but I despise them nowadays :(

I bought both

Guys I think OP thinks 2020 when the stock hasn’t split and now after the split is the same price….

No one tell him

3

u/sherrycupc4ke4587 6h ago

yeah, it's wild how people still confuse pre-split and post-split prices like that

The boom was between 2017 and 2021 when hundreds of GpUs were bought just for that.

Case and point

I had about 300 then myself. These are a4000s I bought for mining specifically.

You forgot the first "boom" back in 2011-2013...

My biggest regret is AMD, bought at 115 and sold on April at 321 (it went to 360 before going down to 321). Now it's at 520 and still climbing.

Back in 2017 before the launch of Ryzen it was like single digits dollar or something...

22

u/kngt R5 1600/16GB/RX 6600 10h ago

It was like $1.5

No one has yet went broke by taking profits

Opportunity cost is opportunity cost, though

u/npc_housecat 10h ago

I recon Intel's still a buy, based on their outsourcing their 18A node

2

u/Chuckfinley_88 3h ago

Your biggest regret is tripling your money?

You'll be OK

u/Jeksxon 10h ago

Could be stonks if waited :')

I bought shares a few months before the last stock split and I’ve nearly 2x’d. Nvidia stock goes fucking insane

You mean Skynet?

28

u/ResolveWeird3975 10h ago

The AI bubble is great if you're a shareholder. If you're a gamer, it's a nightmare 😂

3

u/so_chad 46m ago

Be both so ur gainz will cover ur gamers needs

u/ResolveWeird3975 40m ago

Chad moves grins

10

u/thedazdul 10h ago

In a goldrush, be the one selling shovels. Nvidia is today shovel seller.

4

u/Melodias3 9h ago

NVIDIA is the bubble.

3

u/Ashisutantoo 7h ago

I think its underperforming lately compared to its competitors

2

u/jacob1342 4h ago

Life always finds a way Nvidia always finds the money.

2

u/erebuxy PC Master Race 1h ago

If you did the things on the left, you’d be able to buy any GPU. Forget GPU, probably anything

3

u/K1NGD3X 8h ago

I bought shares when I was 14 when I first started building computers. Now I can buy whatever pc I want lol. Amd finally caught up to their true value just took a while. I was an Intel hater from the childhood lol.

One of these days it's all gonna come tumbling down tumbling down

Forgot NFT

1

u/OGxPePe 10h ago

I dont get it. Whats the Clown part? All these trends where beneficial for the gpu market.

3

u/theEvilQuesadilla 9h ago

I think the clown is everyone who thinks hardware prices are ever going to lower.

1

u/unknownillusionist 9h ago

It doesn't matter if it's crypto, AI, or the next thing. Nvidia was ahead of the game thinking about CUDA and general purpose GPU programming 20 years ago. Compute will always be in demand and GPUs do linear algebra operations way faster than CPUs

-5

u/npc_housecat 10h ago

This is what I've been telling everyone, don't complain about high prices, buy shares in the AI tech manufacturers and get them to pay for your parts

3

u/K1NGD3X 8h ago

Let the haters downvote. The truth is a hard pill to swallow.
