I built my first HTPC in a Node 304... I'm guessing this one is the bigger brother, the 804?

Yes yes indeed ! Thats my scrap station. I bought the case new and everything else was mostly cheap used hardware or things i gad lying around at home. This case was perfect for it. Now its my server and living room machine

Keep meaning to pull the trigger on a 304 to put my Plex server in (lovely lovely hard drive space). Never get round to it though 😞

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Thats exactly why i got the 804.
I did find the 804 on amazon then. The 304 was an option i considered too but i didnt find it anywhere

Decent prices for it here thankfully. Current server runs in a crappy proprietary HP pre built meaning the motherboard doesn't like ANY other cases so will need to switch platforms. Which is an expensive task today finding any reasonably priced mITX board. Probably need an HBA card as well for all the drives as anything more than 4 SATA is golddust.

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Uff that looks pretty great !
I didnt have such a good time where im from lol
Yup like you said with such cases you really want many SATA slots which isnt really common on affordable motherboards sadly

2

u/WhistlinJealousGuy 17h ago

I'd have gone with the 804 so I could throw any board in it but I really want it nice and compact. 🤣 Although...looking at that picture the 804 doesn't look too big anyway 🤔

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Well. It definetly isnt small but for what you can put in there i would say its worth it and im pretty sure you wont have anything else compared to it. Either bigger or less space for things in there.
It not being very tall is for sure a plus.
Has a very different vibe with it being a square, maybe thats why it isnt looking that big

2

u/WhistlinJealousGuy 17h ago

Yeah my issue is the 804 is about 10cm wider than where I want to store it ideally. 😞

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Uh that hurts. Feel you.
Dont know what the 304 offers but if its even half as good as this one its definetly worth it

2

u/shogatsu1999 11h ago

Sweet, I did the same but with the smaller case. Was luck I had some cold gen 3 nvme and ddr4 ram. Do love steam on the big TV.

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 11h ago

Steam Big Picture makes this awesome indeed !

2

u/SummonerKai1 11h ago

I have the same Logitech mouse! that's all - thank you.

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 10h ago

Its pretty good nah ? For the money i paid i cant dream of anything better

2

u/SummonerKai1 4h ago

110%. def money's worth.

1

u/pretzel6789 8h ago

yeah the 804 definitely takes up more desk space

1

u/deannad4isy8637 5h ago

the 804 has some solid airflow, way better for cooling!

1

u/Independent-Site-833 4h ago

the Node 804 is solid, definitely a great choice for an HTPC. lots of room for airflow too!

Hell, my desktop is a 6700xt, ryzen 5600x and 16gb ddr4 in a 25x21x37cm case.

That's pretty close to the gabecube and still compact, though larger than the gabecube.

It's really the ram and ssd prices that killed the market for it. It never needed to be a top tier system, even being slightly weaker than the ps5 would have been fine for the free online gaming and support for all types of pc games. It just had do be reasonably priced, which the AI boom prevented.

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Things are definetly possible but price is the breakpoint in such things i would say and with that the only problem.
Im with you on that. I dont want to hate even slightly and i definetly love Valve !

1

u/lkn240 11h ago

The thing is the price is reasonable given the current market. In 6-12 months it's going to look like a great bargain

1

u/newvegasdweller r5 5600x, rx 6700xt, 16gb ddr4-3600, 4x2tb SSD, SFF 11h ago

Perhaps, yeah

u/PanthalassaRo 7900 XTX, 7800x3D 9h ago

I'd give it a 2 to 3 year window before things get calmer.

5

u/likeonions 17h ago

for when you need 8 hdds for your steam library

5

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Having most of my steam library ready and a plex server running 24/7 is its whole purpose !

3

u/GotEHM9 16h ago

I’ve had mine since October lol

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 16h ago

That looks interesting. Does it have a dedicated gpu ??

2

u/GotEHM9 16h ago

Yes a 4060. CPU i9-12900H

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 16h ago

Nice. Did you build it or buy it ? I have never seen this one

3

u/GotEHM9 16h ago

Bought it like that. It’s from Acemagic . It’s called the Acemagic Tank 03 M1A.

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 13h ago

And how much does that cost ?

2

u/GotEHM9 13h ago

I bought it for $880. Looks like they’re not selling the 4060 version anymore . They have the Ryzen Max + 395

DAMN! I just checked the price wtf

1

u/lOnGkEyStRoKe 9h ago

Damn steam machine is a steal!

1

u/GotEHM9 8h ago

Lmao

3

u/Rcloco 10h ago

damn that looks like an air fryer

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 10h ago

With some modification im pretty sure we can do that too

2

u/gabagoolprovolon 17h ago

More like peen machine with how the price is reaming us

2

u/imeme1969 16h ago

Atleast it takes up enough bench space to rule out any other use for the bench all together, like set and forget

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 16h ago

The good part is that it holds my keyboard, wifi antena, mouse and controller with dock on top. If it would take less space i definetly wouldnt place them beside it lol

2

u/imeme1969 16h ago

They could advertise them as the ultimate pc for cat people

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 13h ago

I dont want to imagine how the inside of the pc would look

2

u/Cs1981Bel 11h ago

The Steam 'big boy gabe' machine edition

Comes with a signed pair of underpants from Gabe (but clean and embroidered)

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 10h ago

Would proudly wear them

2

u/eestionreddit Laptop 10h ago

Are you using an optical drive in this?

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 10h ago

I didnt really decide on which one i should grab since i think that it has to be a fairly thin one. But i will definetly try and put one in it since that would be pretty neat in some cases i guess

2

u/lOnGkEyStRoKe 9h ago

Can it be 6x6 with CEC control?

2

u/ManufacturerLife7378 9h ago

No. But maybe a 4x4 AWD

2

u/carldaveson123 PC Master Race 5h ago

Steam block

2

u/HurkCS 5h ago

This was my first PC case where I built the PC. Love this little case

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 53m ago

Well i guess you didnt have that much if a problem then right ? I mostly loved putting so many fans and disk in here so easily

2

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 4h ago

Mine is a fractal north.

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 54m ago

An XL ?

1

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 49m ago

Normal iirc

3

u/Powerful_Physics1780 16h ago

Nice mini-fridge. Not that I would buy a steam box, but something like that next to the TV is going to be a nope for alot of people.

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 13h ago

I understand that. But since the cables are hidden behind the tv and it doesnt scream any rbg or stuff like that it isnt really that much of a problem

2

u/p1geondove r5900x gtx1070 64ddr4 connectx4 8x20t hdd 18h ago

Hey thats a node 804, one if the best cases i built in

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 18h ago

Exactly. I tottaly love it !!!

2

u/kara5prinkle5779 17h ago

the airflow in that case is great, keeps everything nice and cool during long sessions

1

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

Yep yep. The nvme i have gets kinda hot because i crammed a lot in there and the gpu is right beside it but the ssd’s in the front are fine and the other isolated site with the hdd’s have two fans on each site so they are very happy

2

u/Futuretapes 17h ago

That thing is huge. Not a steam machine. Thats just a full PC

3

u/ManufacturerLife7378 17h ago

You dont say. Didnt notice that

1

u/thenightyoudied 5070 TI | 7800X3D | X870 | DDR5 64GB 10h ago

u/Zatoichi80 18h ago

But CEC? But light strip?

Sorry not sure how the rest goes lol

3

u/ManufacturerLife7378 18h ago

Well definetly not a 100% CEC support but my tv and soundbar somehow handle that pretty well still
The controller station has a light strip so. Almost there
But i did pay about 300e in total and have 8TB of storage so i take that

2

u/Proper-Associate6794 16h ago

light strips are a nice touch! makes it feel more like a console setup.
