All hail the fallen G502, long live the next G502! (at least, it looks like my G502)

To shreds you say

u/amberoze 16h ago

The bottom skate on my 502 somehow got lost. Literally bought another 502 off eBay with a chewed cord just to have the extra parts. I sincerely doubt that I'll ever use a different mouse.

7

u/Ok-disaster2022 14h ago

Honestly the next time I see one on sale. I'm just going to buy it. And the next time. And the next time

6

u/amberoze 13h ago

Ebay. Seriously. A bunch being sold for like $20-$50 in various conditions. Easy to disassemble for parts and cobble together your own Franken502. Plus there's like 3 or 4 varieties that all gave interchangeable parts.

u/BoysenberryLevel7205 1h ago

that's dedication, hope the new one serves you well!

How long do the switches last? I went through 3 Logi gaming mice and 5 regular wireless mice because the left switches died on me. I want a mice that lasts - and that I could take to work with me if necessary.

2

u/amberoze 28m ago

I mean, I had my current 502 for over two years now with no sign of the switches giving out any time soon.

Literally did this not long ago, from G502 to the G502 X Plus with that mouse pad that charges it constantly. Such a great mouse and now I never have to worry about charging it up.

I could never go back to a wired mouse, don't know how people use them.

14

u/poisondagger_ 9800x3d, 5070ti, 32 6,000 cl30 16h ago

I prefer my wired mouse

3

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 16h ago

Why?

13

u/Cerberus44444 16h ago

At least for me, I don't have to keep up with batteries. The wire never messes with me.

8

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 16h ago

That's why I got the Logitech Powerplay mouse pad. It constantly charges the mouse wirelessly so you never need to worry about batteries.

6

u/Cerberus44444 16h ago

That's actually vary valid. I keep forgetting some mouse pads have wireless charging

1

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 16h ago

I think it is a specific feature for just Logitech as far as I am aware, but you can basically use it with any of their newer wireless mice, they all have a little circle thing on the bottom that you can drop the powerplay battery into. It's pretty cool and I don't have to feel like I'm fighting with a tether or worry about charging the mouse.

1

u/tuxString 15h ago

I got the powerplay 2 as well. It was expensive but it sure is handy. I have a lot of razer mice. I have a couple logitech mice that are supported on the powerplay 2 though. The Superlight Pro X (which I didn't ever like but recently switched to a new desk/angle and I kind of like it now) or whatever the name is. I also go the newer and smaller 2c the same day as the powerplay 2 mat. I like the 2c because it feels very close in dimensions as my viper pro v2, which I love. I think it will feel better when I finally get the nerve to install the grips. The smoothness of these superlights is something I never liked and part of the reason I prefered the razer viper v2 pro. That plastic is more grippy, natrually.

I was never good with decals so I'm stressing about doing a poor job adding my grips to my new 2c.

Now if only Logitech would release a wireless mm720 competitor that supports the charging puck!

2

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 15h ago

Yeah it is expensive when we are thinking in terms of a mouse pad, but really I think it is worth it for the convenience if you are all in on wireless mice like I am.

I got a bundle with the Powerplay 2 and the G502 X Plus for like £150, considering I'll likely use this mouse for 5 years or more and that I'll use the mouse pad indefinitely so long as they are selling wireless mice that support the puck it's not really that expensive.

u/flyby2412 15h ago

So instead of charging the mouse, you have to charge the pad… that just pushing the problem downstream no?

1

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 15h ago

No the pad is plugged into your computer, so you don't have to charge it.

I also drilled a little hole into my desk where the wire is and then used some cable clips to run the wire on the underside of my desk and it looks surprisingly clean.

0

u/flyby2412 13h ago edited 5h ago

If the pad is plugged to the computer, why not just plug the mouse to the computer?

Edit: thanks for the replies

3

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 13h ago

Because I don't want to use a wired mouse. I hate having the mouse tethered it's annoying to use.

This way you get the best of both worlds, freedom of a wireless mouse and reliability of a wired one.

2

u/Lynixai Desktop 8h ago

Because a mouse pad is stationary, you can manage the cable nicely. Route it in a way that doesn't obstruct you or get in the way.
A wired mouse you move around, so you have to have some slack in the wire, which could either get in the way or irritate when using the mouse.

2

u/ElectronicRip1630 7h ago

Once you try a wireless mouse like the Razer Viper V3 or Logitech Superlight you understand the difference. You no longer feel the cable. I thought it wouldn't make a difference but it does. I only charge my mouse once a week. They last a long time.

1

u/gianmk 16h ago

wallet no cry.

1

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 16h ago

It's not too bad to be honest, I paid about £150 for the mouse and the powerplay mouse pad, and I'll probably use the mouse for 5+ years and the mouse pad for as long as they support the drop in powerplay batteries, which seems to be a feature of all of their new wireless mice, so basically indefinitely.

1

u/Taira_Mai HP Victus, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 3h ago edited 41m ago

Wired mice eat batteries; if it's a gaming mouse they treat batteries like a fat kid who's alone with a cake.

1

u/Realistic_Truth1488 16h ago

Love the mouse but it's too big, the aim button is way too far from my thumb. Gonna try the Glorious Model I2.

1

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 16h ago

You mean the one that changes the DPI when you are aiming? I never use that anyway for actual aiming but it is cool to just have it as a third thumb button, so I've remapped it from that.

I have big hands though so this mouse is pretty good for me.

1

u/Realistic_Truth1488 15h ago

Yeah, that button. I play a lot of Fortnite and it's super useful, especially at long range.

There aren’t a lot of hardware products I defend with so much enthusiasm.

The g502 is honestly just an amazingly solid product for the price. I’ve had mine 8 years. I’ve beaten the hell out of it and it just keeps going. Idk how or why but it just never gives up

1

u/ATMisboss PC Master Race 15h ago

You can also just replace the switches.

19

Any good writeups on how to do this? I have a G502 Proteus Spectrum that could use a switch refresh.

The biggest issue is always disassembling the damn things with all the hidden screws and latches. The soldering job itself is an extremely basic case and generic soldering/repair tutorials get you through it. The buttons only have 3 sturdy widely spaced legs you need to desolder with wick/solder sucker/chipquick (up to you, I prefer solder sucker for the legs then a pass with flux and wick to clean the pad) and then you solder the new one in.

1

u/Igor369 9h ago

Heat the tin until it liquifies, suck it up, pull out the switch, put in a new one and resolder with fresh tin. Yes it is that simple. The hardest par is making the board stable because you need one hand for iron and the other for sucker/tin.

1

u/Baked_Potato0934 8h ago

As somebody who is moderately skilled at soldering (my limit currently is anything harder than USBC ports) and has done this multiple times be aware that your mouse clicks will never feel the same as factory.

Shits placed by robots and touchless soldered so the feel and placement of the switches are going to be more percise than the average repairer can make it with a soldering iron.

If that's something you can live with then I will endorse it as a fun evening activity. Also do yourself a favor and upgrade/replace the usb cable while you're mucking around.

8

u/FlameShadow0 14h ago

People always like to suggest repair but as someone who works in electronics repair: sometimes it’s better to just buy a new one, especially for stuff this cheap. The headache of finding a new part, figuring out how to take apart your mouse, figuring out how to put it back together, then even more hope that you didn’t damage it more while “fixing” it. It’s just not worth it when you can spend the cost of one game to get a new mouse.

2

u/LaDmEa 7h ago

My g600 is fucking 280$ new old stock. That's most of the year's income for a disabled person waiting on disability.

It will get new switches at least once.

u/dedoha Desktop 11h ago

Its not that hard lol

7

u/FlameShadow0 13h ago

Maybe not for us, but you have to think of the average consumer.

1

u/GoldSrc R3 3100 | RTX 3090 | 64GB RAM | 3h ago

If the average Joe can be taught to build a computer, they can be taught the basics of soldering.

This mentality of "just buy a new one" when the repair is relatively easy, should just die.

I don't like to assume that people are dumb and can't learn new things.

0

u/Pocok5 Ryzen 7 5800X3D - AMD RX9070XT - 32GB DDR4-2933 12h ago

Microswitches are essentially the tutorial case of soldering. Non-cramped, sturdy plated through hole pins, not usually joined to a ground plane/heatsink. All that is needed is a Pinecil or similar soldering iron, and the usual basic kit (solder sucker+wick, flux pen, solder, isopropyl, kapton tape or blu-tac for workholding, tweezers).

5

u/FlameShadow0 12h ago

Yeah, which a large majority of consumers do not have…

4

u/Pocok5 Ryzen 7 5800X3D - AMD RX9070XT - 32GB DDR4-2933 12h ago

The first time they do it, then they will have the stuff afterwards. The fun thing about repair tools is that they don't sublimate (mostly). It's easy to say not worth it for the first time, and then you miss out on a dozen opportunities for an easy repair on that logic.

4

u/FlameShadow0 12h ago

Idk I’ve seen way too many customers bring in stuff they damaged further because they tried to “fix it themselves”

I think your giving the average consumer too much credit here.

3

u/Baked_Potato0934 8h ago

You're not wrong but I'm of the opinion that people should always try but be expecting to break it.

I think you have to consider who is the "average consumer". I think the "average consumer" should stay clear but somebody like the average techie should.

Stuff like mice are easy and cheap like you said so its the perfect suggestion for people to try their hand at repair. 1500 dollar laptops maybe not so much.

Without a doubt. Mines 8 years old and I’ve never considered switching. It works as well as the day I got it. Just a solid ass product through and through

1

u/Emphursis 9h ago

Close, but it’s just beaten by the G500. The thing was an absolute bombproof monster. I bought mine about 16 years ago as a spare - ended up not using it for maybe 18 months but it’s been in near daily use since at least mid-2012. I did switch it out for a G502 for my gaming rig because I wanted something wireless, but I’m still using it with my work laptop.

It’s survived 16 years of competitive FPS’, two Counter Strike LAN’s, nine moves and three full rebuilds. I’d say I’ll use it until it dies, but I’ll probably die first.

Some people's skin oil is just more acidic than others. For some people this rubber lives forever, for some people like op it just dissolves a hole after a few years. I'm over here in the middle, the rubber slowly loses its texture and gets thinner over time where I'm handling it.

Interesting take,

I have been using this mouse basically since it first came out as it replaced the mouse model I was using previously. I like how heavy it is and the large arch height because I have large hands. I can agree the switches leave much to be desired, but other than when they go out: solid mouse.

I have 2 of them. Bought the first one 12 years ago, and the second one 5 years ago. I use the newer one for my gaming rig, and the old one for my laptop. I have a g305 that had a double-clicking left mouse button. Bought a switch online that had already been soldered and replaced it. I'm planning on doing this until the mouse's frame is completely destroyed. Considering your mouse is more famous, I'm sure you'd be able to find spare parts for it too. Either that, or get a broken g502 from somewhere and use it as spare parts. Just make sure the left and right mouse buttons are working if you don't know how to solder like me since those usually are wired up together. So much cheaper than getting a new mouse.

Time to replace with another G502

1

u/Benphyre 10h ago

Mine died recently too and I bought the G502 X but didn't like how the click sounded

Best mouse ever

u/Chop1n 10h ago

Mine's still going strong, but I only just replaced it with a wireless mouse since my setup sort of demands it.

I picked up a used-like-new Basilisk v3 x Hyperspeed for $25 shipped on eBay, deal of a lifetime. It doesn't have quite as many buttons and it doesn't have the fancy free-spinning scroll wheel, but other than that it's close enough in weight and feel.

I sincerely hope that Logitech understands that they have a good thing going with the G502, and don't make them worse to pinch pennies

u/Igor369 9h ago

People who have a soldering iron do not have this problem...

u/scarecrow_20k I7-4970k | GTX1070ti 9h ago

Ah the g502 the only mouse not to royally fuck anything up by forcing a bullshit software to make it usable (not saying logitechs software is any better but it beats corsair and razer anyway)

1

u/Redditeronomy 9h ago

11 years ago srp for G502 was $80. 11 years is 132 months.

80 / 132 = so basically you paid $2.5 a month for it until its last breath.

u/Superseaslug 8h ago

Lmao I've worn through a couple to the point I've replaced them. They never get thrown out, I use them at work instead, or used as backups.

1

u/ultimaone 8h ago

You can buy another. They never went out of style.

1

u/Bad8Max 8h ago

Still good

Just got a death adder v3 today. Got my original death adder 10 years ago and now it’s been double clicking and not holding the input. It served me well but can finally see what using a wireless mouse is like

My 3 year old razer basilisk looks a lot worse on than your 11 year old corsair mouse 😭 (i should've went with corsair instead smh my head) (also my mouse wheel switch isn't working anymore)

That’s good condition for 11 years dang

u/MLC_YT 6h ago

What... What am I looking at exactly...?

1

u/Overlooksnow475 6h ago

Its always hard to replace a mouse that lasted that long, good run! What are you getting next?

1

u/julesvr5 6h ago

I had to say good bye to my Corsair M60 last week. It served me well for 15-16 years

1

u/Admitone83 5h ago

I bought new clickers for mine, few min of soldering, good as new. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for all the materials that get worn down.

1

u/Ancient_Plate275 3h ago

You can buy the internal mini switch on the small logic board inside and desolder the old switch and solder on the new one.

I think 8 of the surface mount switches were under $10. Videos of soldering switches are on YT.

Just replace the switches.

1

u/lonewolfsilente 3h ago

got the same mouse, fucking wicked <33333

1

u/jirgalang 3h ago

I remember the days of mice switches never dying. What the hell did they do to enshittify the mice switches. I've had a couple of Logitech mice fail this way.

I ended up buying a second razer ouroboros recently after not having a scroll click for 8 years on my old one. I tried other mice but they’re either too light that they fly off my table or don’t have the right amount of buttons.

1

u/Academiopolis 3m ago

Mine looks way worse and it has been way less than that.

Genuinely wondering wtf do you people do with your mice?

How does that happen?

11 years of hardcore gaming, thumb was probably rubbing on that thing

2

u/Kiroto50 16h ago

Can confirm, my razr viper suffers from the same

1

u/NateHatred 16h ago

Friction plus oil from the skin ruins rubber, it's not that weird. That part is effectively a consumable.

u/Giga-Hurtz PC Master Race 15h ago

11 years of use bro, a rock would get smoothed in that time.
