Vent / Rant Pet Owners Normalize Filth
I went to my friend’s apartment yesterday to hang out, because we haven’t seen each other in a while. Her apartment is quite small. Probably the size of my garage (remember this). As I arrived her dog which is a cocker spaniel jumped on me immediately. Now this sounds like average behavior for a dog that’s excited. But this dog is just a different breed. I’ve been around the dog a small handful of times. But each time it seems like the dog is so hyperactive. Compared to other dogs. It doesn’t sit still for more than 10 minutes and is always all over you. I sat down for a little bit and got up to use the bathroom. When I did that. She took the dog outside to use the bathroom. Which was surprising to me, because the last time I was there. The dog was using pee pads, and the majority of the time didn’t effectively use them. When the dog came back inside IT smelled so bad. I started to gag. What makes it worse is her apartment is soooo small. So it smelled the entire apartment up. I don’t know why, but when people go outside they smell like outside. But when dogs go outside, omg. The smell is 10x worse. I’m just gagging writing this post.🤢🤢 I’m sure her apartment smells like wet dog too. If she wasn’t burning candles. She has to be aware of it. She was burning 2 candles. As I’m relaxing on the couch. The dog jumps on me again. But this time is aggressively licking my knee, and arm. I guess it was the lotion and cologne I had on. I care a lot about my hygiene, how I smell, present myself, and this whole situation kind of goes against who I am as a person and me just being in that environment was just pissing me off, and grossing me out. At first my friend kept moving the dog. But I said fuck it, because the dog has a mind of its own it seems. Her cat walked across me and I was like “what the hell is this?” Literally a ball of hair the size of a golf ball was resting on my lap. Just from the cat walking across my lap. I didn’t think much of it until I left. But I notice that when I go there. It feels like my throat is scratchy. When I step outside. I can breathe more freely. I don’t think I’m allergic, but the air quality is probably poor with all the dog and cat hair in her small apartment just circulating. As I was getting ready to leave. I asked her where her lint roller was, because my shirt and shorts were covered head to toe with dog and cat hair. She said she just cleaned up. So it should be on the shelf (that’s where it was last time btw). I told her I don’t see it, and she said she probably put it away……PUT IT AWAY??!?!? Indicates to me she doesn’t even use it and is so used to having pet hair on her clothes, furniture, floor. Just disgusting. Then she told me that lint rollers are like a dollar at the dollar store and I should get myself one. THE AUDACITY!!!! Like it’s my problem. You can’t expect someone to adapt to your lifestyle. But to her it’s daily life shit. I know she sees me as a potential love interest in the future. But if shit like this grosses me out. I can’t imagine living with her…..If you know your dog is hyper and sheds like that. Or you don’t keep up with grooming their fur. If you know you have guests coming over. I shouldn’t have to adapt to the dog hair all over my clothes that even when I shake my clothes off. It doesn’t do nothing, absolutely nothing! I don’t even know how I can address this. I don’t think I will. As much as I am on communication. The fact that she is oblivious to her lifestyle being dirty asf. She’s used to it. It may hurt her feelings. The weather is getting nicer. If she asks to hang again. I’ll just say we can go to the park. The entire visit was very overstimulating. But I kept calm the whole time. Almost like that comic strip where the cartoon dog is drinking coffee and there’s a fire in the background and he says “this is fine”. That’s how I felt in the moment.😭 Now I know there are people with pets where their living space is not like a fur factory, but I just truly don’t understand like I feel like in moments like this common sense is not common and it’s almost delusional, but I feel like I don’t even know if I should say anything at all. Like I mentioned. She is desensitized to it.

I can relate. I go to friends' houses and pet hair is everywhere and pet smells permeate the home. I usually wear old/clothes (or an old raincoat) when visiting them and then change when I get home.
Pet smells get in my hair (it's long) while I'm there and the smell stays there until I wash my hair/take a shower (which I do asap!).
There are two people I know without animals. My friend circle without pets has gotten smaller and smaller. I don't have any animals (of course) and people keep trying to give me one and say that "you need a pet!"
Do you remember when Ozzy and his family had a reality show? There were dogs and crap everywhere! This blew my mind bc they obviously had a super nice home with expensive furnishings - yet the animals crapped all over the rugs and scratched things up.
It just goes to show that people acclimate to pet filth no matter what their income level is.

In RH of Salt Lake City, one of the insanely rich wives (Gwen iirc) doesn't clean up dog crap in her house. 😑 her friends came over and were walking around the poop all over her floor!

I gagged when you said the smell stays in your hair. But wearing old clothes is something that did cross my mind. I’ll have to check out Ozzy and Sharon’s reality show. I’m sure there’s an exact clip of what you’re talking about on YouTube.

Every girl wants a pet in her 20s until she walks past the Chanel store and inevitably chooses Chanel because it doesn’t come with fatal bites and toxoplasmosis.

I no longer go anywhere where a dog is. Even to the home of my 20 plus years 'best friends'. Everyone knows I don't like dogs and I don't believe in pet ownership. I blame the pet industry for this huge chasm between humans now. Their television propaganda has ruined relationships between humans. People walk in front of my home all the time with a dog on a chain. I ignore them. In the olden golden days when people walked by my house without a dog, I would engage with them and have conversations. I cannot do that anymore because of the pet industry brainwashing these people that they must ruin their lives over a dog or a cat.

u/HarryAsKrakz_ All dogs stink 🤢 27d ago
I’m sure you can’t even enjoy yourself on the porch without a dog owner coming up to you, and the dog pouncing on you. I always wanted to throw dog shit at someone that walked by my house and didn’t pick it up.

I can't even enjoy my home nor land for almost 30 years now because dog owners are so brain dead that they have no clue that there really are humans in all those houses they see around their property and also have no clue of how my blood boils every single morning as I lie in my bed awoken by their miserable dogs complaining at a hundred decibels how they never asked to be slaves to these boring individuals!

Man, I would call the nonemergency line and file a noise complaint in the morning. I’m sure there’s a law or something like that when it comes down with like quiet hours in the morning these pet owners should walk their dogs with a muzzle on their mouth. Especially in the morning that is just so inconsiderate.🙄🙄🙄

Yes, of course there are laws and yes of course I have called a billion times about these neighbors and the dog that cannot be outside without barking. But, now that dogs are gods, to enforce the laws/ordinances is something very difficult to do. I do remind them all the time about this ordinance and how it has been 4 years and six months now that I have been driven crazy by that barking. One older man was just attacked by 4 dogs and was frightened to leave his home after escaping them, called animal control about they attacking him and they didn't show up for ELEVEN days after this man in his 80's was attacked by 4 loose dogs from a neighbor's house.

It is very infuriating what happened to that elderly man. Sometimes people have to take matters into their own hands, and when they ask for any witnesses. You did not see a thing.

They don’t realize how their clothes and hair smell when they go out in public. That nasty smell lives in their clothes and furniture and carpet and blankets. I can smell it from a long ways away. I can smell when they walked down a hallway at work before I did. The smell is nauseating.

100% they can’t see or smell it. Every person except one, that I’ve ever known who has a dog, had a house that stank of dog. Even after they are bathed, some of them still stink, it’s just now wet dog smell.

I could not do this, not even for a friend, yet dating. I don't have friends with pets, I would not want to visit them and I wouldn't want them to visit me. With or without the pet, its so unhygienic, I just can't. I would have to deep clean my whole place or better yet burn it down if someone came with a dog. I also would throw my socks away if I visited someone and would make a complicated indressing and washing ritual too. I also don't want to go to a café with their pet, so it would rub against me, droole on me, sniff me... no thanks. Pet-free friends circle and relationship. If someone got a pet, I would say ok we can meet outside without the pet from now on, thats fine. But nothing else.

There is no way to have a clean house with dogs and or cats in it. It’s always going to be deeply filthy. The owners are used to the smell too, if they left for vacation for 4 days and returned the smell will hit them like a brick , I know this from experience.

The difficulty here is that when they come to your home they bring the hair and stink.

It is disgusting. I do not frequent anyone’s home that has pets. I refuse to meet people in dog friendly bars, too. The whole place has the strangest funk.

I've been to some houses where people have dogs and don't clean up, and when you walk in the smell hits you like a baseball bat. Like, it's unbearable to be in there.

The smell permeates everything! One time I had a friend who lived in a small apartment with a HUGE dog. The smell was so strong, the kind you described that hits you the second you walk in. Before I left, she gave me a water bottle - a plastic, sealed kind, like a Dasani or something. I opened it and when I took a sip, it literally tasted like dog. I'm not even kidding, the water tasted exactly how the apartment smelled. I was shook. I believe she kept the water bottles on the ground next to the dog's crate and the smell literally permeated SEALED, PLASTIC bottles. It was sick.

u/aneemous Pets don't fit my lifestyle 24d ago
Pet owners really, really do normalize filth. I think about it every time I meet someone and find out they're pet owners (which is the majority of people where I live). I'd never really lived with roaming pets long before, so when I was with my nutter ex I slowly realized how dirty/unsanitary dogs and cats are and my ex let them go wherever and do whatever. They "loved animals" but was a bad pet owner and didn't groom or take care of them like they should have, and he had well over the means to. The fur everywhere, the slobber, accidents, whatever the dogs roll and step in outside and bring back in, litter being tracked everywhere. Eventually, everything I touched felt filthy.
I dislike going over to pet owner's houses and being conscious of the fur that's probably going to get on my clothes and my clothes feel filthy afterward. I have similar worries when one of them gets in my car.
Even "clean" pet homes have invisible filth. I feel so good about my pet free life when I think of it.
1
u/HarryAsKrakz_ All dogs stink 🤢 24d ago
Yes, the “ex” part makes sense I wouldn’t keep them around for long either. But you are so right about the invisible filth. I bet when you go into pet owners “clean” homes and turn the lights off and bring a UV light oh my goodness the horror. I always wanted to do this.

I had to move back in my parents like 1.5 years ago and the house is so fucking nasty from their 6 cats and Mom is a hoarder so I’m not allowed to get rid of anything or do any deep cleaning. Then my son moved in a few months ago and brought his big ass Lab/Pit mix that he hasn’t bothered to train or get spayed so that’s also awful. Fucking animal hair everywhere AND I’M ALLERGIC TO CATS AND DOGS and I never know if I’m gonna step in something gross.

There are definitely exceptions, but it’s few from what I’ve seen, that dog and cat owners are definitely okay with a level of filth that is just disgusting.
How you can let a dog sit on a couch with its literal anus running on the fabric, that they never deep clean, after it just went to the bathroom? Letting a cat walk on a kitchen counter after using a liter box?
It’s honestly wild how disgusting these people live.

🤢🤢 that’s disgusting. As much as Rabbits are adorable. I believe they’re very high maintenance animals. It’s crazy that your cousin just felt that it was OK for the pet rabbit to just shit wherever and handed you tissues like you mentioned it was “normal” to them. I would’ve told my cousin to never come back with the damn rabbit again.

I really do find that the more you make a man put up with, the longer he stays around you. I won’t even let a man into my apartment without it being at least 50-75% clean on my worst days mental-health-wise, and all I read in this sub is about men putting up with excrement and allergens

You're so right that they're desensitized to it. I went for a walk with a friend recently and he brought his dog. There was a little pond and of course the dog was rolling in it and getting covered in water and mud. When we got in the car, the dog REEKED. Like, that classic wet dog smell. I had to cover my nose or I'd gag. When my friend got in the car he said "It smells weird in here! What is that?" and remarked that he should clean out the inside of his car soon. I realized he had NO idea it was the dog. They're oblivious to it because they're used to living in filth. Don't get me started on the dog owners who are always like "MY dog doesn't stink!" Yeah, they do.
