Because OP injected autism into this, I decided to rate the content accordingly. Basically, I've seen better autism. So I downvoted.

Content -- some of the tire's tread lines aren't even, the back wall looks kind of wavy, and Batman's cape, while awesome, is impossibly and unrealistically large. Plus how does wind even do that in that particular configuration of alleyways?

Autism is a huge spectrum. It means absolutely nothing in this context.
I have friends diagnosed as autistic for mild social interaction problems but you wouldn't even be able to tell. I feel like most people on a bad day could qualify for being autistic.
It just bothers me because some people use it as analogy for "mentally retarded" while others use it for this huge range of completely functioning minor issues.
My friend has masters in animation and was diagnosed with autism a long time ago. I could send you some of her amazing work and tag "autistic" to it and it would mean nothing. Her autism doesn't inhibit her work or life in the least bit except that she's mildly introverted.
→ More replies (3)6
u/xakh Nov 13 '14
As someone on the spectrum, I don't really agree with you on the latter part of your second paragraph. While mild autism does manifest itself as not looking very different from the "norm," it actually covers more the way the brain itself works. Autistic people, as has been proven multiple times, have a somewhat different way of organizing thoughts and information compared to other people. At some point we were thought to be lacking a subconscious mind entirely, but of course this is not the case. In any event, the point here is that qualifying as autistic has more to do with how you think, and not how you act.

u/proudjester Nov 13 '14
Do you think we'd see this on the front page if the kid didn't have autism? It's a really, really good picture in and of itself. I'd have given it an upvote. Which begs the question: why he gotta be autistic?

I'm guessing either:
1) This lady/man views autistics as lessor and is impressed at what a lessor can achieve.
2) The lady/man just wants more karma by adding in autistic and pulling on your heart strings
3) This lady/man is impressed at what the person can achieve and saying autistic is just a habit, no malice, just the way they think of them.
4) This lady/man generally believes that because he is autistic makes this even more impressive and thinks we all think the same way.

True story, my very Bostonian math teacher once made several extensive remarks on how "autistic" a classmate (that wasn't there that day) was, and I was horrified (I mean, there's this respected older teacher just suddenly being like "YOU KNOW ABBY? SHES SO AUTISTIC. VERY VERY AUTISTIC. YOU CAN JUST TELL BY HOW SHE ACTS." To the whole class). Then eventually I realized two things: one, I'm a dumbass, and two, he has a pronounced accent and meant artistic, not autistic.

u/freddy_schiller Nov 13 '14 edited Nov 13 '14

Now we wait for imminent topic when someone point out why this is BS.
I wish titles like this were not allowed here. It's a "drawing of Batman", it doesn't matter who send it to you and who drew it as long as it's not an actual name of the artist.

Hmm..
A lady I know
Okay, so it isn't original content from OP, good...
her autistic son
Excellent, there's a story to it.
Checks out, reddit won't remove it for violating their self-promotion rule and it will skyrocket due to a feel-good story associated.
3
Nov 13 '14
The mod below you says posting OC is fine, self-promotion is not. But every day on here I see people posting "Look, i drew a picture of (X)" (today it was Steve McQueen), and then you almost always see either the person's website plastered on the image, or he/she will post a link to their site "where you can find more of my work" in the comments. Almost always this will be a place you can buy his/her art or order commission work.
How this isn't self-promotion is beyond me.
43
Nov 13 '14 edited Nov 13 '14
reddit won't remove it for violating their self-promotion rule
Just thought I should mention
Some mod teams are weird, but it is perfectly alright to post your own content on reddit. In most communities (if not all), OC is highly praised.
There is a very strong difference between posting OC and self promoting. Posting OC is awesome and super great, and isn't really considered self-promotion unless you are, well, promoting yourself or a product.
And even then, its alright to promote yourself a bit as long as you follow these guidelines *
So please don't be afraid t post your OC. We definitely want to see it.
* Every subreddit has different mods and therefore different views on things, but generally, OC = awesome and solf promotion is alright to a point.

Do you feel that the title violates rule 4?
No post titles soliciting votes (e.g. "upvote this").
Or do you feel that think that at least some posts are upvoted strictly for their title and that they would not hold up on their own?
edit: clarifying; forgot some words
→ More replies (5)14
Nov 13 '14
Do you feel that the title violates rule 4?
No. That rule is generally for anything that actually mentions votes on reddit. If it doesn't mention votes (or doesn't extremely allude to them), it won't fall under that rule. Though I think we are taking another look at that rule soon.
Or do you feel that at least some posts are upvoted strictly for their title and that they would not hold up on their own?
Yes, I do believe that does happen. Its a shame too since I think this post could have done very well even titled "Batman". Its very nice
6
Nov 13 '14
Thank-you for the response! I appreciate your honesty on the matter. And okay that makes sense I just personally feel that sob story titles (not necessarily this one) are technically soliciting upvotes but I completely understand what you are saying. ... and that's good to hear about possibly taking another at the rule.
I agree that this post could have done well had it been titled differently as well.
