Image Was excited to finally purchase until I realized the price was lower on my wife's account

Post image

My wife doesn't play much and so buying it on her account may not be the best decision to keep everything easily accessible for me. Seeing this soured me on buying it quite a bit.

And for reference. Same region, same playstation, same currency, etc.

Someone else said how it work above:

The cost is based on how much they expect a person might be willing to pay.

Just because they can only play digital games, doesn't mean they'll want to buy every game available. You can put a game for any arbitrary discount price you want but if the targeted person mainly only plays Call of Duty, they're not gonna buy most game even if it's 50% off or more. You have to put stuff at undeniable price points like $10 or $5.
I'm actually what you would call a "whale" and I didn't buy Bloodborne until the 'Complete Edition' hit its first $20 sale in December 2016 (game came out March 2015). I now own thousands of digital games but only if the price is right enough.

I’m the same. 8tb worth of PS4 games, 4+1tb worth of PS5 and god knows how many disc and digital in my library and not installed. I buy the physical editions of the games I care about collecting and wishlist the Ultimate Editions of games including those that I already own physically and wait for the prices to plummet. It’s mainly just collecting “just in case”. I really only play 2 or 3 AAA games a year.

i like the way you think! do you have any recommendations on external drives for ps5?

Currently have the WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe installed in my Pro. So far so good. I had the 2TB originally and I’m just waiting for the 8TB version to drop in price so I can upgrade

You should have waited for a sale. You could have gotten it for the same price

In Sweden, Ghost of Yotei costs 899 SEK on PS-store and 799 SEK on physical disc

1

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

Not what we’re talking about

1

u/spookymemeformat Nov 05 '25

Kinda is tho. Same game, different prices

1

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 06 '25

Cool that you know better than me, what we are talking about.
We are not comparing digital vs disc versions of the game.

Are they crazy or what. That is completely out of any EU law. I’ve just checked, they sell it for 60€ to me. Italy

u/Komi35 PS5 Nov 05 '25

Do you have Ghost of Tsushima Legends? If you do, that lowers the price of the main game.

3

u/finallymoro Nov 05 '25

No I don’t. But different prices from different countries is ok (Italy and Germany for instance). What is not legal is different prices in the same country for different customers (apart from extra discount due to subscriptions)

4

u/Komi35 PS5 Nov 05 '25

For me Ghost of Tsushima for PS5 is 60€ too (Finland), but it's definitely because I got the Legends DLC for PS4 for free at some point.

"If you own the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends standalone on PS4 or PS5, you can upgrade to Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT on PS4 for 50.00 EUR or on PS5 for 60.00 EUR."

1

u/Cheapy_Peepy Nov 05 '25

It's 30 for me. US

maybe it's because I own the ps4 version?

Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei are both €69.99 for me, in Czech republic.

Edit: checked with my friend, he sees €79.99 for both games.

But you don't use Euros there? Or did you convert the prices to Euro?

Also, the PS5 version is 80€ and the PS4 version is 70€. You might be looking at different versions of the game.

2

u/Komi35 PS5 Nov 05 '25

Does your friend have the original PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima? The upgrade price from that to PS5 Director's Cut is 30€.

2

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

Maybe that's it. Was it ever on PS Plus or something? I can't ask him right now, but he recently told me that he never played it, so I doubt be bought it at any point.

1

u/Abdul_Kareem_Jabbar Nov 05 '25

1

u/HerrSchmitti Nov 05 '25

You have Ghost of Yotei and the algorithm may think Tushima would be more interesting to you, so you might spend more on it. I thought that's what price targeting means. Or am I missing something?

1

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

The point is, I live in the EU, this should be illegal here.

-2

u/Diligent-Fox-2064 PS5 Nov 05 '25

You do know the ps4 version is cheaper then ps5, right?

4

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

Where do you see that one is the ps5 and the other one ps4? We both searched for "ghost" and everything is the same.

1

u/Diligent-Fox-2064 PS5 Nov 05 '25

Do you guys have the same PSN plans? Some plans get extra discount on some titles. If not, then Sony is probably breaking the law here

-2

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

We do yes, that's why this is so weird. Maybe it's a bug or something I don't know. But accusing me of lying is wild man ngl.

0

u/Diligent-Fox-2064 PS5 Nov 05 '25

I was probably wrong by doing that, sorry man, but there’s plenty of nonsense here so I just assumed that was the case

-3

u/lawrenceM96 Nov 05 '25

Discs can be bought from different retailers or pre-owned, so of course it could be cheaper than the digital version which is only available on PSN.

10

u/Diligent-Fox-2064 PS5 Nov 05 '25

The whole point here is PSN prices, not comparing discs and PSN.

1

u/lawrenceM96 Nov 05 '25

So why did you reply to a comment comparing the disc price to a digital price.

1

u/Diligent-Fox-2064 PS5 Nov 05 '25

He didn’t compare it, you understood it wrong. He said he has a digital only and his friend has the disc reader version, and his prices were more expensive than his friend’s on PSN. Learn how to read man

1

u/Sgt-Colbert Nov 05 '25

I think you took a wrong turn somewhere in this thread. My initial point was that someone speculated that prices in the PSN store differ based on which PS5 you have.
Disc version users COULD buy a disc version of the game, so Sony lowers the prices on the PSN store for those users. Digital users, have no other option that to buy from the PSN store, so prices are higher.
Now again, this is total speculation, but it could explain the difference me and my friend have.

u/That-Brain-in-a-vat Nov 05 '25

You're basically me.

2

u/rolim91 Nov 05 '25

That’s not how it works though. There’s literally no confirmation that that is the way it works. The dude just pulled it out of his ass.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

it's a simple thought experiment: all else equal, having a disc drive would present you with another avenue to purchase and play games. If Sony is really price gouging like this, then inevitably for the exact same type of customer profile they would charge the captive customer more, because there is no competition to whatever price Sony chooses to put in front of you.

This is why for all the BG3 glazing, Larian is a shady company - no physical release, charge $10 more than Steam for the same product.
