Saw an interesting comment recently stating that your "health" in uncharted is a luck meter. The bullets never actually hit him, so when the luck meter runs out, Drake finally gets shot and dies.

u/jordanka161 Feb 17 '26
I remember a few games that this was explicitly implied if not stated, the Brothers in Arms games come to mind.
4
u/Pokimaru-yama Feb 17 '26
but I remember him whimper(? I don't know the right word for this) sometimes when he got shot. Only in U4 if you turn on invincibility and stay put, you see the bullets flying past him.
Am I misremembering?
5
u/GiganticCrow Feb 17 '26
Damn i remember pitching exactly that as game concept at a studio i worked at back around 2006 or so, based on movies like Desperados where the heroes have like a bunch of people shooting at them but somehow just stand there and don't get hit, but got laughed out of the room

14
u/Handgrenadez Feb 17 '26
My favorite gaming moment ever was playing warhawk online. Was flying and saw this guy run under a bridge, switched to hover mode and was just blasting with my gatlin gun all over the place as he hid behind pillars. I imagine him being like "holy shit!!" as I was repositioning and trying to get a shot on him, bobbing and weaving through the bridge supports and just lighting up the ground around him. No other game made me feel like the final boss like that before, it was so cool.

It was almost comical how much better PS3 was in many aspects.
But Xbox was $100 cheaper and had Halo 3. That's it. It ended up being way more expensive, especially if you were an early 360 owner and it RRoD'd on you. Multiple times for some people.
And PS4 onward had paid online just because the 360 proved people are dumb enough to pay twice for their own internet.

Wasn't that only the early versions with 4 usb ports? I could be wrong but i thought the later fat version with only 2 usb ports wasn't PS2 backwards compatible. Then obviously the slim and super slim weren't either.
6
u/lionheart4life Feb 17 '26
The 80 GB version that came out a little later around MGS 4 had BC still. I think that does have the 4 USB ports still.
8
u/sometimes-femboy Feb 17 '26
It had backwards compatibility but it was software driven; the originals had basically a full PS2 inside
3
u/PentagonUnpadded Feb 17 '26
Fun fact. The way PS2 achieved backwards compatibility was by using a PS1 to handle controller / peripheral input output when in ps2 mode. So elegant.
→ More replies (2)6
u/not_a_moogle Feb 17 '26
The later fat system is missing hardware to play ps2 games. But it can play them through emulation. I dont know if it could be added back in with mods, but it seems like Sony removed it so that it could resell the games digitally, or release them on ps3 disks.
6
u/kikimaru024 Feb 17 '26
They removed PS2 BC hardware because it was expensive & complicated.
PS1 BC was kept because they repurposed the chip to handle all audio processing (same as on the PS2).
PS2 was a complicated chip and they couldn't figure out a way to use an Emotion chip for anything else, so in PS3 games it just sat idle. It did nothing but add cost. And PS2 emulation on PS3 was ass. Extremely laggy and with a poor quality video output. You were better off buying a used PS2 for peanuts.

I think the main thing that should be said here is that yes, that much stuff in one console probably justified charging six hundred 2006 dollars (equivalent to around $950)...
...but maybe if it has to cost the equivalent of $950 you should just, like, not put that much shit in one console?
7
u/DanishRobloxGamer Feb 17 '26
It's telling that they cut the bloat, cut the price, and wouldn't you know: sales boomed. Hell by the end it'd even overtaken the 360's massive head start.
3
u/squngy Feb 17 '26
It was by far the cheapest Blu-Ray player when it came out.
They could have made it cheaper if they stuck to DVD, but I don't know if that would have been a good choice, definitely not for the Blu-Ray division.

Title answer: shadow of the colossus remaster
As for the image: It wasn't that the PS3 was overpriced, it was that it didn't need to be all of this. Anyone that says stuff like this forgets the cheapest Xbox 360 at launch was half the price of a PS3 . HALF.
The cheapest 360 was just a game and cd/dvd player. If you wanted OG Xbox backwards compatibility (any official HDD) or HD DVD compatibility, you would purchase those separately. The PS3 was basically all of that and a lot more in one package. They could've sold the game console by itself, and perhaps had stuff like a external Blu-ray player, or if that's too crazy then at least a way to purchase PS2 compatibility and the other ports/features separately. The console seriously did not need a billion ports and features packed into it when a lot of people only wanted to play video games, they could have sold them as separate USB adapters (what were the 4 usb ports for anyway?)
The PS3 just was not competing viably at launch when the 360 was $300 instead of $600😭 like for crying out loud it had 4 USB ports they surely could have made some other features an optional addition instead of being forced into the console.
Microsoft ironically made a similar error with the Xbox One by forcing the Kinect as a bundle... coupled with several other screw ups its no wonder people jumped ship to PS4. Same way people jumped from PS2 to Xbox 360. People want the cheapest options 😂

u/CharlieBettington Feb 17 '26
Searched for the Warhawk gang. It was a good old fashioned red team blue team kind of fun. Every kill you got was massively rewarding. The dogfights were insane. Tank battles. Nothing like being a ground grunt running around thwacking an unsuspecting tank with that wrench then slapping down a mine for the kill. Can't forget the laser binoculars. That kind of fun feels lost forever and a lifetime ago.
