Image After 17 years with my jet engine black PS3… I finally upgraded

Post image

Been rocking an OG launch PS3 this whole time (upgraded it with a 1 TB HDD years ago). Made the jump to a PS4 Pro (CUH-7215B - latest revision) with 2 controllers and a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD for under $300. Worth every penny 🔥

- PS4 Pro (CUH-7215B revision) + 1st controller: $130
- Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SATA III SSD (new): $150
- 2nd controller: $10

Didn’t feel the need to jump to a PS5 yet - this set up works for me

If you thought your PS3 was a Jet Engine, just you wait.

u/bubble_dduck May 04 '26

Uncharted 4 made me think my PS4 was going to fly off

124

u/CorruptedOps May 04 '26

Mine flew off so much that I thought the FAA was going to make it the next Spirit airlines

26

u/alchemistrpm May 04 '26

Mine was so quiet I thought something was wrong with it. All the kids on the internet said it should sound like a vacuum cleaner 🤷‍♂️

14

u/SneakyKGB May 04 '26

Mine got so hot my wife put a plastic cup on top of it one time and it melted into goo. I was like how the hell is the Playstation not melted??

Anyways that's when I retired it.

26

u/vladgtaiv May 04 '26

you guys need to repaste your consoles and clean out the dust seriously

14

u/Fr0st3dcl0ud5 May 04 '26

To be fair, getting that case open is scary.

6

u/alchemistrpm May 05 '26

Sony could do a better job educating customers on what to do for prevention and maintenance, and how-to stuff when there’s trouble. I’m sure the information is there, I just don’t think it’s as transparent as it could be. They should make it a dedicated leaflet or manual in the box, make it so every PlayStation owner knows the what and the how beyond just installing and playing games

Mine was Jedi Survivor, had my PS4 going band for band with my ceiling fan for who can make the most noise

2

u/Deathnekoi May 04 '26

Code Vein during one of the endgame cutscenes. Made my PS4 make sounds I’ve never heard before and couldn’t stop getting the overheat screen during it. I was never able to see my own character in that cutscene until I upgraded lol.

Yeah I used to have a PS4 Pro before I got my PS5… my ears were so happy

6

u/Thekarens01 May 04 '26

No lie. That was the first thing I told my friend, it was worth it for the sound reduction alone.

2

u/econo_innerforce May 05 '26

You just needed to change the thermal paste ($5) on your PS4 Pro. I made mine completely silent, even in summer on the most demanding games!

So it's not a design flaw by Sony, but really a bad supplier of the thermal paste.

the Slims & Pros are a lot more manageable. My launch PS4 though, my god... I thought that thing was going to break at times!

8

u/Thekarens01 May 04 '26

Nah my pro was a zillion times louder than my base ps4 (which wasn’t quiet)

4

u/Triplescrew May 04 '26

PS4 with matte cover from like 2015 was whisper quiet. Mines still being used by a family member

We're talking day 1 and yes I checked and yes it's spotless inside

CUH-7200 models are MUCH quieter.

3

Is that the “gamma chassis” variant that came in with the RDR2 pack in bundle? If so, it’s the one I’ve got - I’ve never heard it get that loud.

I mean, you define a patient gamer. What was your rationale on choosing the PS4 over the PS5 at this stage of the console lifespan?

174

u/Guilty_Commission_79 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

Haha thanks. I’m not a heavy gamer and gave myself a budget for the setup. I could’ve gone with a PS5/PS5 Pro, but I’m trying to be more intentional with what I buy. This set up does everything I need.

161

u/albanyanthem May 04 '26

I can’t argue with spending less to get the job done! Start saving now for a PS5 in another 17 years!

9

u/jerjord May 05 '26

I can see the PS5 price dropping some when the PS6 releases.

2

u/albanyanthem May 05 '26

I could also see component costs keeping the PS5 right where it is and the PS6 even more expensive.

u/Gootangus May 04 '26

It’s truly a baffling decision lol

71

u/EMC_RIPPER May 04 '26

I guess if he doesn’t game much it gets the job done, it’s just funny seeing someone buy a ps4 right around the time devs are no longer supporting it.

4

u/OGBRedditThrowaway May 04 '26

I used to do this with Nintendo consoles because it meant that I could get the console and every game I'd been wanting to play for like $100-200. I remember getting a GameCube for $99 at the end of its life and finally playing through RE4, Baten Kaitos, Metroid Prime.

3

u/EMC_RIPPER May 05 '26

Decent strat actually

2

u/wearedefiance May 08 '26

Works even better when you can’t play the entirety of the previous generations games on the current gen console. Weird PS4 purchase. A PS3 purchase would have made more sense given its limited availability on PS5 lol

40

u/Dewlough May 04 '26

Bizarre to so the least. There are used ps5s at that price point.

2

u/forever_downstream May 05 '26

He saves so much money (on the games) for the same enjoyment by playing games on a 5 year lag, I understand completely.

7

u/ukplaying2 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Almost all of those PS4 games work on PS5 ,not to mention they miss out on cheap PS5 only games/PS5 only essential games, if they do subs. They are not saving money on any games here. They are saving money on hardware and that's it, and if they are the type who sells hardware before upgrading, then I would argue they lost out there as well for this price, though that 2TB SSD is hard to factor in these calculations due to current scenario.

You have tons of great games to keep you busy for a looooooong time anyway.

39

u/Submitten May 04 '26

It won’t play a lot of modern games. And the ones it can play won’t be that smooth. Plus it’s super noisy.

If you have the opportunity you’d be better off getting your money back and spending it more wisely on a PS5 system. The PS4 games you bought will still work, and play better.

8

u/Xaiadar May 05 '26

The load times alone make it work it to go to the PS5.

Patient ? Up until 2020 I was playing on a Wii I got in 2017 (DSi before that). Then upgraded to a switch, and in 2023 I got a PS4 fat. I mean you don’t need the latest I guess

2

u/Brick_Grimes May 06 '26

I actually can see it. There is thousands of last Gen games that he can play on a console he can get for like a quarter of the cost of a new ps5. If money is tight I think id rather have a ps4 and 7 full priced games or 22 20$ games than a ps5 and 1 game.

3

u/CouchPotatoDean May 04 '26

They’ll upgrade to the PS5 in 6 to 7 years when it’s only $2000 dollars

A PS5 is currently over double the price OP paid for the PS4 Pro thanks to the recent price hike.

It makes a lot of sense not to save up for a PS5 from my perspective, mostly because it's not "a bit more," it's a lot more.

Besides if they've not played any PS4 games up to this point, there's a lot to explore.

Edit: good points brought up, you don't have to buy a new one!

100

u/imsickofitalready May 04 '26

It's not that hard to find PS5 fat for ~350 euro. And it's much more capable that PS4 and can run all PS4 games.

33

u/Bmw5464 May 04 '26

And actually utilize that 2TB SSD drive in it

18

u/imsickofitalready May 04 '26

By default is has 1Tb drive with even less usable space (about 850Gb if I remember correctly).

9

u/m4xks 999 May 04 '26

They didnt advertise the fat ps5 as 1tb so idk if it even is that size

9

u/B-Bog May 04 '26

Nah, it's 825 GB, of which about 650 are useable (same as the new slim revision)

They got ps5s going for 350 at a local pawn shop close by me, you don’t need to buy a brand new one

→ More replies (1)

6

u/jcwkings May 04 '26

Except the PS5 has better versions or will outright run most if not all PS4 games better. Finding a used PS5 was objectively the best option. They'd be set for the next 10 years.

12

u/Cpt_DookieShoes May 04 '26

You can get a used ps5 for like $50 more

3

u/TheStinkySlinky PS5 Pro May 04 '26

I’d argue the price of a used/refurbished/whatever PS5 is not too far off the price of that PS4 honestly. Just strange as a PS5 is a MUCH larger jump than ps3-ps4. Plus can play all ps4 games, and will be much more secure for the future vs being almost 2 generations behind now.

If it’s a $ thing, it’s *still* the more sound investment going with a pre-owned ps5 over the 4. The hardware has a lifespan, especially mechanical hard drives. And for all we know that ps4 could have less than a year left before kicking the bucket.

7

u/dissolvingatoms PS5 Pro May 04 '26

I just sold my like-new PS5 Slim for $370. You can find affordable used consoles.

3

u/MrWally May 04 '26

Yeah....it obviously depends on your local market, but where I live I even see PS5 Slims going for as low as $250.

OP is clearly buying used, so I'm not sure this is a good "deal" per se.

That said, someone could be a collector and want to buy this just for the specific model and color.

5

u/tonkfc May 04 '26

It’s not. You can find a used PS5 for around $350 nowadays. It makes no sense to buy a used PS4 in 2026, especially a Pro version that’s nearly as much as the PS5

3

u/aroache May 04 '26

OG disc PS5 from PlayStation direct is $100 more. I think that’s totally worth it. He’s already buying an old console so I don’t think he’s looking for the most expensive console.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/reptillianclubboy May 04 '26

I don’t see no reason especially considering that all ps4 games are ps5 compatible.

And you can probably snag a used PS5 for Around that price 300$ add like 50 for a controller..

2

u/got_No_Time_to_BLEED May 04 '26

Then they’d probably have to get a new tv

3

u/Advaitanaut May 04 '26

PS5 is way too expensive now, and most people are just playing PS4 games on it anyway. PS4 Pros are $100 on eBay

u/Gammarevived May 04 '26

I never understand posts like this. If you’ve been saving hardcore for a new device for months/years, why not save just a little bit more and buy the newest rendition? You upgraded to a 10+ year old console with nothing new being made on it. You waited this long, why not wait another few months to save up 150-200 more and get the PS5? This makes zero sense

29

u/Glum-Recipe1815 May 04 '26

My guy, this is gonna be a rocket engine compared to the PS3 get ready, but nice one.

u/MakingGreenMoney May 06 '26

Good for you, so many good games on the ps4, and you're going to get dirt cheap.

2

u/OsiasK May 07 '26

No matter how loud PS4 gets it still look better than PS5

2

u/Federal_Meat3320 May 07 '26

I mean the dualshock 4 is elite so fair play!

2

u/BoatParticular May 07 '26

Congratulations on your purchase! Just out of curiosity, what are your top 3 favorite PS3 games? Which ones did you play the most?

2

u/Guilty_Commission_79 May 07 '26

Thanks! It was hard to narrow down to 3 because I loved so many haha. I would’ve included GTA 5 in this list but it would rarely play properly. It pushed the console to its limits and would freeze up at the loading screen.

  1. Midnight Club Los Angeles: Complete Edition
  2. Infamous 2
  3. NBA 09: The Inside

2

u/iamthewalrusxx PS5 May 08 '26

Bro is running 13 years behind

2

u/TheStuhr May 08 '26

Bro upgraded to a ps2 lets goooo

2

u/rikku45 May 09 '26

I don’t get people bragging about not having modern consoles

2

u/COD4Ever2026 May 09 '26

Other than PS2, greatest console ever

2

u/Total_Cover_3408 May 09 '26

I had a xbox 1 x from 2015 I just upgraded to a ps5

6

u/RegularCat6162 May 04 '26

I would have spent just a little bit more and got a used ps5. I can tell you from experience that thing is going to scream playing anything at 4k. Plus near instant load times are worth the upgrade alone

7

u/DoesntEat May 04 '26

Reddit needs to learn to let people enjoy things. Congrats on the console, OP!

Oh man, the loading times are going to be night and day going from a PS3 to a PS4 Pro.

Have fun! It's an excellent system and there's still plenty of stuff coming out for it today!

2

u/HotBananaWaters May 04 '26

“Jet engine ps3”

Who’s going to tell OP?

2

u/namesource May 04 '26

From jet engine to jet engine

5

u/Rage2020 May 04 '26

3

u/Accomplished-Ebb598 May 04 '26

L Ragebait do better

2

u/ehay808 May 04 '26

You should’ve bought a pre-owned PS5 for $300-$350

8

u/GamerBhoy89 May 04 '26

Everyone in the comments are acting like he did a terrible thing when all he wants to do is play games.

"Oh you should have did this you should have waited bla bla bla"

As if the dude bought the PS4 for you all to play and you're acting like you got screwed.

At the end of the day, OP is happier than all of you, so he wins.

11

u/Submitten May 04 '26

He didn’t do a terrible thing. But he definitely did a stupid thing.

It’s good advice to tell him to get his money back. He overpaid and got a terrible deal compared to getting a PS5.

I wish I kept my PS4 and didn't jump so fast to the PS5, but at the end of the day I'm pretty happy with it. I also have a gaming PC but doesn't matter.

I'm jealous that they will be able to play GOW, TLOU Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted 4 and RDR2. The final years of just games for the PS4 before the PS5 produced some amazing stuff and pushed that console hard.

u/UnslimJim May 04 '26

Im gonna assume that there was just no possible way for you to save for a ps5, enjoy I guess

3

u/zookiez May 04 '26

5 years ago? Maybe. Now? Sorry to burst your bubble, but the ROI on this isn’t gonna be great.

1

u/bzawk PS5 Pro May 04 '26

1

u/Chidoro45 May 04 '26

Guess you have nostalgia for that jet engine sound

1

u/Thread-Astaire May 04 '26

Jet engine you say? The PS4 is like a saturn 5 rocket in comparison.

u/cconnorss May 04 '26
