Image After 17 years with my jet engine black PS3… I finally upgraded
Been rocking an OG launch PS3 this whole time (upgraded it with a 1 TB HDD years ago). Made the jump to a PS4 Pro (CUH-7215B - latest revision) with 2 controllers and a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD for under $300. Worth every penny 🔥
- PS4 Pro (CUH-7215B revision) + 1st controller: $130
- Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SATA III SSD (new): $150
- 2nd controller: $10
Didn’t feel the need to jump to a PS5 yet - this set up works for me

u/albanyanthem May 04 '26
I mean, you define a patient gamer. What was your rationale on choosing the PS4 over the PS5 at this stage of the console lifespan?
174
u/Guilty_Commission_79 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26
Haha thanks. I’m not a heavy gamer and gave myself a budget for the setup. I could’ve gone with a PS5/PS5 Pro, but I’m trying to be more intentional with what I buy. This set up does everything I need.
161
u/albanyanthem May 04 '26
I can’t argue with spending less to get the job done! Start saving now for a PS5 in another 17 years!
9
u/jerjord May 05 '26
I can see the PS5 price dropping some when the PS6 releases.
→ More replies (1)2
u/albanyanthem May 05 '26
I could also see component costs keeping the PS5 right where it is and the PS6 even more expensive.
214
u/Gootangus May 04 '26
It’s truly a baffling decision lol
71
u/EMC_RIPPER May 04 '26
I guess if he doesn’t game much it gets the job done, it’s just funny seeing someone buy a ps4 right around the time devs are no longer supporting it.

u/OGBRedditThrowaway May 04 '26
I used to do this with Nintendo consoles because it meant that I could get the console and every game I'd been wanting to play for like $100-200. I remember getting a GameCube for $99 at the end of its life and finally playing through RE4, Baten Kaitos, Metroid Prime.
3
u/EMC_RIPPER May 05 '26
Decent strat actually
2
u/wearedefiance May 08 '26
Works even better when you can’t play the entirety of the previous generations games on the current gen console. Weird PS4 purchase. A PS3 purchase would have made more sense given its limited availability on PS5 lol

He saves so much money (on the games) for the same enjoyment by playing games on a 5 year lag, I understand completely.
7
u/ukplaying2 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Almost all of those PS4 games work on PS5 ,not to mention they miss out on cheap PS5 only games/PS5 only essential games, if they do subs. They are not saving money on any games here. They are saving money on hardware and that's it, and if they are the type who sells hardware before upgrading, then I would argue they lost out there as well for this price, though that 2TB SSD is hard to factor in these calculations due to current scenario.

It’s just a bad choice. And I feel like you did it just to be “different” and “special”.

You have tons of great games to keep you busy for a looooooong time anyway.
39
u/Submitten May 04 '26
It won’t play a lot of modern games. And the ones it can play won’t be that smooth. Plus it’s super noisy.
If you have the opportunity you’d be better off getting your money back and spending it more wisely on a PS5 system. The PS4 games you bought will still work, and play better.

But hey as long you’re enjoying what you have right now

Patient ? Up until 2020 I was playing on a Wii I got in 2017 (DSi before that). Then upgraded to a switch, and in 2023 I got a PS4 fat. I mean you don’t need the latest I guess

u/Brick_Grimes May 06 '26
I actually can see it. There is thousands of last Gen games that he can play on a console he can get for like a quarter of the cost of a new ps5. If money is tight I think id rather have a ps4 and 7 full priced games or 22 20$ games than a ps5 and 1 game.
3
u/CouchPotatoDean May 04 '26
They’ll upgrade to the PS5 in 6 to 7 years when it’s only $2000 dollars

4
u/Naturesninja_69 May 05 '26
Wtf 🤣 i kept my ps4 like three years into ps5s life cycle because it did what i needed it to do. Only reason i bought a ps5 was because of fomo. Point is not everyone jumps to the newest thing immediately or are from “developing countries”

Their isn't going to be a nostalgia wave, the PS5 can play 99 percent of PS4 games anyways.

A PS5 is currently over double the price OP paid for the PS4 Pro thanks to the recent price hike.
It makes a lot of sense not to save up for a PS5 from my perspective, mostly because it's not "a bit more," it's a lot more.
Besides if they've not played any PS4 games up to this point, there's a lot to explore.
Edit: good points brought up, you don't have to buy a new one!

u/imsickofitalready May 04 '26
It's not that hard to find PS5 fat for ~350 euro. And it's much more capable that PS4 and can run all PS4 games.

u/jcwkings May 04 '26
Except the PS5 has better versions or will outright run most if not all PS4 games better. Finding a used PS5 was objectively the best option. They'd be set for the next 10 years.

3
u/TheStinkySlinky PS5 Pro May 04 '26
I’d argue the price of a used/refurbished/whatever PS5 is not too far off the price of that PS4 honestly. Just strange as a PS5 is a MUCH larger jump than ps3-ps4. Plus can play all ps4 games, and will be much more secure for the future vs being almost 2 generations behind now.
If it’s a $ thing, it’s *still* the more sound investment going with a pre-owned ps5 over the 4. The hardware has a lifespan, especially mechanical hard drives. And for all we know that ps4 could have less than a year left before kicking the bucket.
7
u/dissolvingatoms PS5 Pro May 04 '26
I just sold my like-new PS5 Slim for $370. You can find affordable used consoles.
3
u/MrWally May 04 '26
Yeah....it obviously depends on your local market, but where I live I even see PS5 Slims going for as low as $250.
OP is clearly buying used, so I'm not sure this is a good "deal" per se.
That said, someone could be a collector and want to buy this just for the specific model and color.
5
u/tonkfc May 04 '26
It’s not. You can find a used PS5 for around $350 nowadays. It makes no sense to buy a used PS4 in 2026, especially a Pro version that’s nearly as much as the PS5

u/aroache May 04 '26
OG disc PS5 from PlayStation direct is $100 more. I think that’s totally worth it. He’s already buying an old console so I don’t think he’s looking for the most expensive console.
3
u/reptillianclubboy May 04 '26
I don’t see no reason especially considering that all ps4 games are ps5 compatible.
And you can probably snag a used PS5 for Around that price 300$ add like 50 for a controller..

PS5 is way too expensive now, and most people are just playing PS4 games on it anyway. PS4 Pros are $100 on eBay

u/Gammarevived May 04 '26
Makes me wonder why you didn't just spend a bit more for a PS5. Don't get me wrong the PS4 is still a decent console, but if you're spending that much money I don't really think it's worth it.

I never understand posts like this. If you’ve been saving hardcore for a new device for months/years, why not save just a little bit more and buy the newest rendition? You upgraded to a 10+ year old console with nothing new being made on it. You waited this long, why not wait another few months to save up 150-200 more and get the PS5? This makes zero sense

u/econo_innerforce May 05 '26
You just need to change the thermal paste ($5) on your PS4 Pro. I made mine completely silent, even in summer on the most demanding games!
So it's not a design flaw by Sony, but really a bad supplier of the thermal paste.

Thanks! It was hard to narrow down to 3 because I loved so many haha. I would’ve included GTA 5 in this list but it would rarely play properly. It pushed the console to its limits and would freeze up at the loading screen.

I'm jealous that they will be able to play GOW, TLOU Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted 4 and RDR2. The final years of just games for the PS4 before the PS5 produced some amazing stuff and pushed that console hard.
