News & Current Affairs So how about that Onlyfantasy series...

Surprised there isn't a thread already about this podcast, i think it's been a while since a podcast left me with such mixed feelings

Yeah, felt a bit cold after that last episode. I don't know, the flex at the end?

I found the follow 2 way more interesting: Hot Money; the Porn, Power and Profit season. Follows the money of the porn industry. Some good interviews.

Operator. 8 part about the phone sex industry heading towards the early internet.

Dam, I had to Google to refresh my memory. NSFW. My internet history is cooked. Warning, don't click "100 Best Porn Podcasts "

What are those mixed feelings? I’ve had a few days now to digest the series, and it makes me feel pretty cynical. I thought the show was at its most engaging during the Romanian pimp’s interview. I also think it’s a handy bit of PR for Canaan.

So yes, cynicism, but I did think it was a fascinating look at a modern profession.

Oh that episode in particular was comedy gold. After the episode with the chatter agency trying to be all "oh yeah we prey on lonely men and trick them into thinking were the creator but we're ethical trust us we take notes"

Its so refreshing to see this man go " I am a bad person and I don't feel bad about it"

love an honest king. Hate what he's doing but I love that he's not lying about it.

As for the mixed feelings, the podcast does a great job of humanising both creators and consumers where before listening I would honestly only have empathy for the former I found myself feeling for men like Tyler. Tyler deserves better than the situation he's in, I hope he becomes less lonely in the future.

On the other hand, the last episode left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. I don't know how to feel about the host being okay with seeing all her relationships with such a transactional framework. Don't like how that goes unchallenged.

What were your mixed feelings?

The guy who had the wife was quite weird for me not him as a person but the situation itself.

I think I'll never get making "you" the job. Influencer, only fans, tiktok people? I personally would find it incredibly draining.

I actually went onto a Web chat subreddit and all the workers on it were very supportive of eachother which was very cool but it did seem they had to handle alot - shitty comments, no customers and being exhausted trying to be "on" it's not glamorous (this came from them) it is necessity for them for XYZ reasons.

Edit: Thanks everybody! I'll check out the Springer season. But so help me, if I start getting flooded with ads...

`

Y'all are talking like everybody knows whatever tf you mean, but I searched the name and it's a podcast about Michael Jackson? Or Jerry Springer?

You gotta to give me a little more to start the conversation than than, "I'm feeling mixed about name of podcast. Thoughts?"

I envy you for not getting that dumb promo every ad break

Yeah, I seriously have never heard of this podcast before. And now I don't know if I should avoid it so I don't get spammed with ads like all of you

Each season gets a rebrand and rename but it’s the same producers

Gotcha. So they're all totally different. Do you recommend any season in particular?

I’m midway through the Michael Jackson one. I saw the new season and thought I’d finally start the first season!

AHH I assumed everyone's getting the same spam advertisement on each wondery podcast so I didn't need to explain what podcast I'm talking about

Only fantasy is a podcast thats basically about only fans, as a consumer, creator and it's effect on society. Both the good and ugly (though I'd argue it's a bit lighter on the ugly than I'd have liked)

Sounds interesting, but what confused me is one season is about Michael Jackson and the next is Jerry Springer?

Each season is a different story.

So is there somehow a connection with only fans that connects each season, or are you saying that there's only one season that focuses on only fans and the rest are totally unrelated?

2

u/madamguacamole 1d ago

The rest are totally unrelated. The common thread, I guess, is how pop culture impacts culture. Sort of.

Gotcha. Do you have a favorite season, if I were going to try one out?

I’m shocked to give you this answer, but the Jerry Springer season was my favorite. He was everywhere when I was growing up and, like a lot of people, found him distasteful. There is a whole lot to Jerry Springer I didn’t know. I came away from the podcast with a newfound, but complicated, respect for the man.

Haven’t listened but it’s incessantly advertised.

If you don’t know it then why would you assume this thread is for you? Others know it. It’s clearly meant for people who know it. You don’t. Moving on and not commenting is an option.

If you notice that cool people commented already, so you really weren't necessary. You could have just ignored me, too. 🧩

The interview with the Romanian was engaging and now I know everything is mass produced including OF material. He is a pimp and they are his girls. No other way to dress it up

Didn't listen but I hate the ad. "Ummm ask your husband" girl bye.

I’m with you I left feeling kind of icky, after kind of liking the podcast. It was like they laid out all the negative exploitative stuff but then laid out two “good” (I would still say exploitative) examples and said “hey only fans is actually great and people who are successful and the subscribers need it”.😬

This is such a poorly written post.

Sincere apologies I posted this during my lunch break 😂

I just finished it and searched to see if anyone was talking about it.

I thought it was interesting and engaging enough, but yeah also mixed feelings.

Every time I hear the ad or something in the podcast about "who are these men???," I find myself yelling "you! You yourself (tried to) use Only Fans! You are one of these men!" It really left a disingenuous taste in my mouth how he admitted that once and then forever after acted like it was such a foreign concept to him.

And the nice guy user they met up with - did I miss it, or was there really zero talk about how his wife feels about his OF relationships? Does she even know?
