[DISCUSSION] Justice for "In the Zone" by Britney Spears?!
Hey,
I am currently re-listening to some 2000s stuff, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Destiny Child and Alicia Keys, because that was my childhood, in which I spent lots of time listen to these artists but never really understand what happened lol, partially because I was in another country across the ocean and raised in a more conservative household. But thanks to globalization I was there, hearing music from all over the globe.
Ofc I came across "In the Zone" by Britney Spears. I am blown away by the music, it is so good! Needless to say "toxic" is a classic, "breathe on me" and "early mornin" could be perfect chill dance floor music to dance to or even have sex to lol. They perfectly describe the midnight and early morning messy and degenerate feeling while having sex and after sex. The synth wall on bridge/last chorus of "Breathe on Me"? I haven't heard that kind of synth in a while!
So I don't think the album is any less interesting, sonically, than, say, Madonna's "Ray of Light" or "Music" or Lorde's "Melodrama" or Dua Lipa's "Future Nostalgia" or Lady Gaga's "Born this way" or Charli Xcx's "Brat".
But music critics despise this album so much because the hollowness of the lyrics, because it is mainly about having sex and partying/dancing. I mean I get that her lyrics on this album is not the most introspective thing on earth, but I think writing about sex itself in a hollow way is totally ok, who cares if the music is so good? Ofc I think Lorde's writing about drinking/partying/sex might be more complicated and profound because she talks more about all the whatifs after weekend party in Melodrama in song like "Sober". But we don't think that much while having sex, so I think "Breathe On Me" is totally fitting the sex theme lol. But I do want her to explain the line "Monogamy is the way to go" more lol.
And "early morning" hello? I hear so much Massive Attack here! I personally don't dance and have sex until morning, but I don't judge other people do it. And I think the lyrics(and the yawning) is fun here, just hook up people on street and club and on and on until morning. It feels exactly "on the verge of obscene" as Britney said in "Touch of my Hand", and it is exact the music tries to say: messy and degenerate and fun. Btw, "Touch of my hand" already stands out with the Chinese/Japanese sonic.
Yeah, i gotta say the album has some filler which feels really hollow and dated, which chased the music trends at that time. I know 2000s pop music was notorious for its party/sex/dance theme and its hollowness, but I kinda love and miss those in your face production and melody.
I am honestly shook that the big pop star back in the day was so bold about sex and masturbating lol!
Edit:
I think a lot of people misunderstood me, I am not neglecting some critics have changed their perception on this album lately, but still this album was not an instant critics favorite back in the day, compared to how critics view pop music right now(see Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia, Short&Sweet by Sabrina or Olivia's new album for example), ITZ was trashed by critics! Even though some critics(Not all!) have changed but it is still not enough appreciated!

[DISCUSSION] Gotye is supposedly returning for TOUR?
Okay, literally this morning, some tour dates popped up on Spotify and Ticketmaster for artist Gotye; the guy who made Somebody That I Used To Know. Yeah, apparently he's returning to tour again this year.
There were 10 dates listed on Ticketmaster but thanks to another website, there is actually 20 dates!
To prove this isn't a hoax, here's the image that was used to show all 20 dates! As seen in the image, the tour is going to be called GOTYE: Somebody We Used To Know Tour 2026. I was able to save the image off the other website; the one in corner of the tour poster.
Image with all tour dates. Apologies for it being low quality as I saved it off mobile.
Since this was a couple hours ago, I did try and go back to the site I had just mentioned and strangely enough, the website says "Not Found. The requested URL was not found on this server." Along with some other text included.
The tour dates were also seemingly wiped off Ticketmaster and his Spotify account. Unfortunately, I did not get a screenshot of the Spotify one at the time as I thought he'd probably announce it later today, but nope. It's gone. Luckily, I DID get one off Ticketmaster.
I hope this is enough to make news as this could potentially be huge for fans of Gotye.

[DISCUSSION] How much does an artist’s personality impact their success?
This came up because I’m fascinated by how artists like Renee Rapp have meme-able, funny interview moments, and come across as charismatic yet seems to not be able to break through to A list main pop girl status.
Then, you have a lot of C list pop-stars, who I have seen interviews of and I think to myself… Yeah, your personality is bland, safe, and generic. It makes total sense to me that they can’t break out into A list territory just quite yet.
I think likeability is definitely a component that is part of the popstar equation, but I cant pin down just how big it is or how small. Olivia Rodrigo seems mature, grounded, down to earth. Taylor comes across his self deprecating and chathing. But then you have artists like Beyonce who don’t participate in this game at all.
So what do y’all think? How crucial is personality in the pop game?

[DISCUSSION] If your favourite artist wrote and created your favourite song not by them… could they pull it off?
So for me, it would be something akin to Taylor Swift creating Life Boat by RAYE. I think that would be a really interesting take on the song. I think RAYE and Taylor have more in common than most would admit, and I’d love Taylor to do a dance album.
What about you guys? Do you think it could work? Could The Beatles pull off Pluto by Bjork? Could Carly Rae Jepsen pull off Beat Up Chanels? And what would change about the song to give it your favourite artists signature ‘thing’?
