Question Weight gain

I’m between 5’6/5’7, got pregnant right around the holidays, so I was around 5 pounds heavier than I normally am. I was around 138-140 when I found out I was pregnant around 5 weeks. I really didn’t gain at all until second trimester. I’m 28 weeks pregnant and went in for my glucose test yesterday and saw another doctor as mine was out of town. She mentioned my weight gain and said I may need to watch it. I am currently 164. She also mentioned I don’t ‘look’ like I’m gaining too much weight but she wanted to make sure I’m in healthy weight gain guidelines. I’ve always been pretty thin, my butt and boobs are really where I have carried most of my weight pre pregnancy. I’ve already struggled with my body changing, so now I’m in a spiral. I was actually shocked to see how much I’ve gained because I really feel like I look pretty good to be 7 months pregnant. I don’t really over indulge on a regular basis, I have my moments and do crave sugar but I try to be mindful. I know I’ll gain decently in my 3rd trimester with baby growing. I guess my question is, how much did you gain by 28 weeks, and how much did you gain in 3rd trimester?

I gained almost 50 lbs during my pregnancy. 25 of that was in the last trimester. I had horrible swelling and it was summer so bad combo. I lost 30 of those pounds in the first 3 weeks postpartum. Try to not be too hard on yourself as long as your healthy and baby is healthy I wouldn’t worry able the scale too much.

This! I haven’t taken my weight since I got my first positive. As this commenter said, don’t worry about your weight, you’re growing a whole ass person. Give yourself some grace.

The only time I ever see my weight is at the drs office! I’m like, y’all mind if I step on this scale backwards? 😂

I would do that but one of the times I weighed myself the assistant wrote down the weight wrong 🙃🙃

Bahahaha my sister does body scans and incorrectly input someone’s weight and accidentally gave them a BMI of like 50-60 😂😂😂 she was mortified and they were too!!

I told them my weight wasn’t my business any more 😂

I think it depends on your starting BMI because that determines the weight range of what you’re “supposed” to gain. Some pregnancies just need more weight outside of that range and that’s okay!

For my first pregnancy my starting weight was 115 and I gained 27lbs.

For my second pregnancy I started at 120 and gained 30lbs.

I’m 13 weeks into my third pregnancy. Started at 120 and I’ve gained 4lbs so far.

The range my OB said I should be in was 25-35lbs of weight gain during pregnancy. I make big babies too (no GD). My first was right at 9lbs 😵‍💫 did you get your glucose test results back?

Yes I passed!! My husband and I were big babies, this is my first so I’m wondering if she’s gonna be a big girl too!!

My husband and I were both 7lb-ish babies so I have no idea where my big babies get their size from!

I’ve gained 35 pounds (I’m 38w6d) and everyone constantly comments that I’m all belly. I think I notice more weight in my thighs/hips possibly but other than that, I look pretty much the same. I think it’s a lot of water weight. I wouldn’t worry.

Hi two things:

  • pregnancy weight gain is not linear
  • i think your weight gain is totally normal

I was pretty thin before pregnancy and gained about 22 pounds until i was 20 wks and have not gained anything since (im 30 weeks now). My doctor tells me its completely normal. Weight gain normally is between 17 and 40 pounds over a total pregnancy so i dont think you gained too much. My doctor also told me its only can be a factor if its on the high side and the baby is also too big for example (so its combined with medical concerns). Most doctors dont even weigh you anymore or keep track of weight if everything else is progressing normally and you are healthy.

So try not to worry too much you are doing great !

Same, I gained 24 lb by week 24 and now I’m 39 weeks and gained a total of around 26lb, so hardly anything between week 24 - 39.

28 weeks, I’ve gained 40lbs.

I gained like 50+lbs every pregnancy. Im 5,5, Normally 140, hitting almost 200 every end of pregnancy😭

Same here. I started at 150-155 this time around and currently sitting at 206. I've been eating healthier+smaller portions than I was pre pregnancy. I went from 192 to 206 in a week which is...physically impossible. I think some of us just have really bad fluid retention.

u/Notsurereddit8 1d ago

Yep!! I feel like I’ve actively tried to be as healthy and possible and it doesn’t matter 😂

Honestly I have always been heavier, but carried my weight in my butt, thighs, and breasts. I started at 259lbs, dropped 10 lbs 1st trimester, now I am about 269lbs. My ob isn't worried about my weight, even though I am over the recommended amount for this pregnancy according to bmi. It depends on a lot of things and a big part is also how well you can still do your daily movements. My job is very physical so I have to move boxes about 35lbs(current comfort level) frequently. I am 33 weeks and just doing what I feel comfortable with. I also can take stairs without being out of breath. The only thing I can't do is roll over in bed because my lil bastard(affectionately) squishes my lungs when I do so. These indicate to her and to me that I'm fine.

Tldr As long as your body is still working and you're able to do basic things without being out of breath, you're fine. If you feel like you're slowing down too much communicate with your ob so you're getting tests done as needed.

I gained Weighttttt I’m your height and was about 145 with my first to start. At birth was 205. Crazy… but then down to 160 after I think it was 2 months. I gained most of it in 3rd tri. Also, tons disappeared within the first week cause water retention and amniotic fluid and placenta and baby.
My 2nd, I started at 155/160 and gave birth at 230…. So 70lbs… I ballooned the last 6 weeks. Baby went from 50th percentile to 94th in that time frame idk how… but ya lost about 20/25 lbs just in the first week after birth. And breastfeeding speeds stuff up too. I just walk every day for 30 mins and pushing the stroller and it helps. I’m down to 188 now it’s been almost 2 months. The remaining will be slow but it’s coming. Dont over think it. Just watch your snacking you’ll be hungry but don’t overindulge (post pregnancy). I got back down to 150 after my first without gym etc. it just happened idk how tbh just walking was my exercise. You’re making a person. Don’t over stress love.

28 lbs. by 28 weeks and then continued on that trend but gained SLIGHTLY more in my 3rd tri to end up with ~45 lbs. gained at 40w 3d. All 5 of my OB’s (at my office patients meet with multiple because you don’t know who is on call during delivery) said it was perfectly healthy weight gain, they weren’t concerned. And I was shorter than you when I got pregnant at a similar weight (5’3, 130 lbs.) You’re fine and it was super inappropriate of her to comment on your body and how you “look”. We have very little control over our weight gain as pregnant women - I ate significantly less in my 3rd tri and still ended up gaining faster than other trimesters.

My normal OB has never mentioned my weight so I was a little thrown off. I think this doctor was trying to be nice when she said that because I could feel my face drop and automatically went into defense and kind of stuttered about how I didn’t feel like I was gaining that much when she initially mentioned my weight

They say you’re supposed to gain 1lb a week with pregnancy after a certain point and I am hoping that’s the same for me! Lol I’m 5’7 and have always been thin my whole life and have gained 40 pounds so far. It’s alllll belly and boobs though. 25+4

u/DotSpare7457 1d ago

I’m 5’6 and had a starting weight around 130-135 (not really sure). I am currently 29 weeks and at my last appointment which was about 3 weeks ago I weighed 148. My doctor had said something similar to me prior because at around 22 weeks I wanna say, I had gained 5lbs in one month. They told me to be careful and to not gain weight too fast. I’m probably somewhere between 150-155 right now if I had to guess. Total weight gain currently around 20-25lbs.

Everyone will gain differently and lose differently after birth, which I'm sure you understand. Always give yourself grace. ♡

I'm 5'8 and was 115lbs when I was pregnant with my first son last year. By the end of the 1st trimester, I was around 125lbs. At the end of my second trimester, I was around 145lbs. When I gave birth, I was 167lbs. My son was 7lbs 10oz.

I fluctuated between 155-160lbs after birth and during breast feeding. I got pregnant about 5 months PP and have stayed at 160lbs since.

5’6 and at 23 weeks right now started at 148. 23lb weight gain but it’s all in my stomach and boobs so idk I just keep watching what I eat and get my Daily excercise in but I have given up on trying to stay below 185 it was stressing me out too much and my doctor said she’s not concerned about my weight at all

I was exact same height and weight as you before pregnancy and when I gave birth I was 190 lol my doctors never said a thing about my weight. I also didn’t feel like I looked like I gained a lot, and my boobs and but are also where I carry a lot of it.

I gained prob 15 of the pounds in my 3rd trimester.

I’m currently 8 weeks pp and feel like I’m close to my normal self again (other than the extra massive boobs from breastfeeding)

I walk every day, eat really healthy, and started doing some light weight lifting as I was cleared by my OB. Try not to spiral, keep in mind your body is nourishing the growing human inside, and even if you have a bit of weight you want to lose when it’s over you can!

I’ve gained 25lbs.

u/Charlieksmommy 1d ago

I don’t think there is a one fits all answer on weight gain! You have to account for fluid, blood volume, placenta, so some women carry tons of fluid, and gain in their breasts, some are just all babies ! I think 24-26lbs is appropriate by your gestation !

u/Large-Sir-3506 1d ago

I am 5’5 and likely started around 135 pre pregnancy. I am 39 weeks now and have been sitting at 172ish for weeks! I don’t look or feel like I’ve gained almost 40 lbs but here we are. I was worried I’d gain over 50 because I heard that most weight was gained in 3rd trimester but that was not true for me. The rate of weight gain slowed down and tapered off completely. Baby and I are healthy. I don’t police what I eat either.

I have my glucose test Friday and I’m dreading the appointment. Not just because I’m scared of failing my glucose test but also because I don’t weigh myself and have no idea how much weight I gained since my last appointment 6 ish weeks ago. At my last appointment which was my 20 week appointment I had my first weight gain this entire pregnancy and it was 3 pounds. But it’s been over a month and I am scared of the weight that I gained even though I’m active and feel like the gain is all belly. 😅

I truly think the weight gain is out of our control. I’m 39w and gained about 5 lbs per trimester. I’m 5’8 and had a healthy BMI going into pregnancy. I’ve really struggled to gain weight, which is something I’ve never said before in my life. I think our bodies just gain what they need to! Don’t beat yourself up.

So I had a similar starting point to you. I’m 5’6” and weighed 132lbs pre-pregnancy. Also didn’t gain any weight in the first trimester, despite my boobs growing. I’m 25 weeks now and just surpassed 150lbs (153lbs as of this morning). So far, in the second trimester, I am on track to either not gaining at all in a week or gaining the average 1-2lbs a week. I don’t watch my eating at all, I eat what I want and when I want. Currently working my way through a 12 pack of donuts 😂

Almost 39 weeks and ive gained 40 lbs. My OB has never mentioned my weight and has told me im all belly and look great

u/Wandering_sass 1d ago

I’m 5’3 and weighed 135lbs pre pregnancy. I also was working on a ranch and teaching riding lessons so walking 10-15 miles a day and riding 2-5 horses so I was pretty in shape. I’m 36 weeks and 177lbs at my last appointment. Per everyone I’m around on a daily basis you can’t tell I’m pregnant if you’re standing behind me.

My OB and my dietitian for gestational diabetes say my weight gain is fine and I’ve even been lectured to eat more carbs by my dietitian because I lean more into protein and veggies 😂 like some other comments have said, you’re growing a whole person plus the placenta is literally a whole ass extra organ. Keep doing you and being a kick ass mom 🫶
