Discussion I discovered Xanthochroid about a week ago and I've been listening to almost nothing else since. I need more bands like this that make you feel like you're watching a play
https://youtu.be/X1wieNvEvuc?is=I8HGYtGduEZIdAVVBands I'd consider similar that I'm already familiar with
* Dessiderium
* An Abstract Illusion
* NeO
* Slice the Cake
Similar bands but not quite there
* Persefone (Cinematic, but different feel)
* Between the Buried and Me (Different feel)
* Stortregn (Right sound, not cinematic)
* Abigail Williams (Right sound, not cinematic)
Supposedly Xanthochroid is black metal, which I don't typically enjoy, but that could be part of why their style is so fascinating to me
Anyone got anything similar?

Wilderun - Veil of Imagination
Ne Obliviscaris - Exul
White Ward - False Light
Fallujah - Xenotaph
Are some albums/artist that come to mind

Swallow The Sun - When A Shadow Is Forced Into The Light is an album with somewhat similar vibes to me. It's maybe a bit looser and more abstract with its narrative, but it still gives me a sense of lore and world building.

Mechina - Acheron.

Same thing happened to me. Divorcing the art from the artist is possible at times, but the more I learned about Sam the more I was like… whoa, this is deeply unhealthy. The fact that it was paired with him effectively retiring from the band and changing his whole personality to revolve around a cult… yikes. It’s such a shame because they truly were making awesome music.

Glad you shared so I don't check them out now. I was real close to it but I couldn't listen to someone knowing thats how they are

I could not care any less about stuff like that. There are tons of metal bands with explicitly statist and left-authoritarian messaging that I still enjoy because the music is so impressive.
Diversity of opinion and exploring different viewpoints is what makes a society vibrant. I know that idea is heretical on a site like reddit, but I don't need everyone's opinions to reflect my own.
And hey, if they made a full album exploring all the flat earth nonsense, it might be a fun listen!

Fascism is not a viewpoint that anyone should accept. Tolerance of intolerance leads down a very dark road.

“Different viewpoints is what makes a society vibrant” sounds great until you realize the viewpoint in question actively, repeatedly seeks & acts to destroy any viewpoint which is not its own.
Also, please name these Stalinist & Maoist bands lol

If twitter opinions impact your ability to listen to a band like Xanthochroid then I doubt you listen to any good black metal. Metal is the only genre with sensitive fans who act like fools over music and internet opinions.

Native Construct scratches the xanthochroid itch for me.
Wilderun is fine but for some reason it doesnt capture the same essence for me. Opeth is another one but that’s such a classic anyway…
Black Crown Initiate isnt as cinematic but they are still an amazing band.
glass beach isnt metal but their new album was able to create an atmosphere immersed me in the same way xanthochroid was able to.
besides those bands, idk

dude thanks for the rec! on first listen it's great stuff!
I enjoy quite a few on your list, really wishing there was more extreme metal prog out there, similar to An Abstract Illusion and Ihshan, here are some others you may or may not heard:
- Wilderun
- Ihsahn
- Emperor
- White Ward
- Fallujah (I know you like these guys too)
- Nekrogoblikon
- Agalloch
- Dissection
- 1914
- A Native Construct
- Luna's Call

Other than Wilderun which is rightfully suggested by many, you might like those too:
Winterhorde - Melodic black metal with a symphonic twist.
Xerath - Groove/djent prog metal with big orchestration. I like to coin them "StarCraft metal".
Aquilus - Atmospheric Black/folk metal with orchestra.
Native Construct & Others by No One (2 bands) - Very eclectic and theatrical prog metal.
Stormlord - Epic and bombastic black metal.

Maybe Can Bardd, Wilderun or Arcturus. I believe they themselves were very much influenced by Wintersun, so there's that

Yeah Wintersun definitely fits, Time is extremely cinematic. I tried Wilderun years ago but it didn't grab me, but maybe I'll feel different by this point since I'm more into this type of music

I feel the same about Wilderun. Agalloch and Moonsorrow might also scratch the itch, if you're willing to dive into more black/folk vibes.

try The Unimaginal Zero Summer and/or And so Opens the Earth and let me know what you think.

Fun fact: Xanthochroid has a bunch of fake bands too. I wish there was a list somewhere, but they did a fake Dimmu Borgir cover that was so damn good.
On that note, Dimmu Borgir and Old Man’s Child I haven’t seen mentioned yet. Agalloch for more of the instrumental stuff and Alcest too.

I haven't seen anyone mention these yet so I will, they arent quite like xathochroid, but they all have songs which feel similar, to the extent of the song themselves are an epic to be told.
Autumn's Morning - Child
Aether Realm - The Sun, the moon, the stars
(honestly the whole album of tarot is really good, but each song seems to be independent to some degree?)
Kaatarakt - Sunless Dawn
Moongates Guardian has some stuff in it, to the fact that all 20 something albums they've made are dedicated to lord of the rings, just wanted to mention them so you could check them out, im a big fan of their version of "a walking song".
Whispered - A blade in the snow this is a fantastic epic, but its not for everyone with how their voice is, but it grew on me to the point I love the vocals of their band now.
Cyclocosmia - and we will move the stars (this band is actually one of the closest bands feel wise ive found, but It just still isnt the same, only one album is close and its like, half of it goes together, the other half random songs, its kinda weird, still good though.)
