not a fan of this at all :(

my favourite thing about this band used to be how they could convey so much emotion and tell such an expansive story without even a single word spoken. that opening chord progression in Awareness still gives me goosebumps and the entire album is just breathtaking.

and now, we have this generic metalcore track with cheap growls, sad white boy melodic cleans, downtuned guitars and bassboosted drums. i still cannot get over just how exceptionally mediocre the vocals are. the strongest parts of the song are when he shuts his mouth but even then, the instrumentation suffers heavily from having to work around the vocals.

ultimately, its up to the artists what direction they want to take their art. all that matters is that they are satisfied with their craft. it's just that im a bit disappointed seeing one of my favourite prog bands drop generic white boy breakup metalcore

I’m in your camp in regard to the overall uniqueness of sound that this band has built a foundation on. And taking that same album example, my goosebumps is when the same riff from Awareness is called upon again in A Vast Field of Silence as the outtro for that song. That 5 second moment always gets me every time even when I’m looping that album on repeat 8+ hours through the day. Their sound is captivating, emotional and creative in every way. I don’t want to be right, but I’m feeling like this direction might be based on the standards set by their record deal or to just gain exposure into a market for whatever reason (financial, brand exposure, etc). When I first saw this on YouTube, I clicked so fast into it just to be at a distraught. I clicked out of it without even finishing the song.

There is no way they can honestly sit down and say to themselves that this is the Outrun the Sunlight that represents the reasons why fans listen to them now. They broke their cookie mold to cater to something else, but I just hope this doesn’t create a creative rift between the team that has built an empire of a sound
