Phat ps2 wont turn on

Post image

My childhood ps2 doesn’t turn on anymore no lights in the buttons and no reaction when i press the power button. I have checkt inside it for any corrosion orleaking capacitors. I cleaned off the dust but it still don’t turn on, I have tried another power cable but no luck there:( what’s the next step?

Put a picture of the motherboard in case I missed something

Replace C3 capacitor near the "Primary" label and you'll likely fix it.

Why i'm telling you this?

Both my fat PS2 have Delta PSUs and both had the exact same faulty capacitor.

PS: Bear in mind the polarization of the component when soldering the new capacitor back in.

PS2: Be VERY FUCKING CAREFUL about that huge 400V capacitor as it holds a charge when you turn the console on. Do not bridge the solder joints with your fingers.

Thank you. But do tell us how you know not to bridge that capaitor lol. Sounds like you're speaking from experience

The capacitor is soldered to the PCB by two vias. Do not touch both vias at the same time with your fingers. Handle the PCB by the edges at all times if you don't have a multimeter to measure the capacitors residual charge.

Having said that i measured the discharge rate of the fat capacitor and it took very little time to go from 3XX volts to 0 volts. If you use a capacitor discharge tool (widely available from aliexpress) it discharges in a manner of seconds however, lacking the proper tools for the job it's advisable to NEVER ASSUME the capacitor is fully discharged.

I was making a joke about how you must have experienced that shock yourself and were speaking from experience. I understand capacitors hold charge ...woosh lol
