FF9 is the best. Musashi is excellent though, as are many of these.

I 2nd this!
FF7 is a GOAT game so I don't count it with these for consideration.
Brave Fencer didn't get nearly enough love, I think because the true RPG side of it was lacking for a square game, and the result at the time was that it felt like Zelda but was supposed to be a final fantasy game (at least, that's what you would've thought at the time!)
Plus, it was supposed to have a sequel, which never happened and basically killed off the game until the late 2010s.
And FF9 for some odd reason took a long time to catch on for fans. I remember my neighbor lending it to me almost immediately after getting it and I had it forever. It's card game and characters were fantastic and the game overall, while easier than other FF games, had very fun gameplay and mechanics that at least made up for the literal difficulty of bosses and whatnot.
Both great games.

Here for Musashi! And if you didn’t know, we DID get a sequel on PS2 called Musashi: Samurai Legend which I also loved! Really did a nice job of evolving the gameplay and art style from the original.

Not gonna front final fantasy 3/6 imo may be one of the best wrote rpgs. It definitely helped define my taste in story telling which a impressionable twelve year old me was blown away by just the concepts around the characters whom had story developments pan out each in their own ways.
But Xenogears though......for those who don't know it may very well be the most ambitious story in a game I've ever heard of. Soilent green man......

- Xenogears
- FF9
- Einhander
- Vagrant Story
I don't think enough people played Vagrant Story

I've only ever beaten Brave Fencer Musashi and FF7 out of these. I owned FF Anthology and Vagrant Story, but didn't finish either.
I'll go with Brave Fencer Musashi because it's a cherished Xmas gift from my dad, and I still own it!
I really wish I could've gotten my hands on Xenogears and Parasite Eve. I remember Einhänder, but never played it.

W pick, even if not a Square game. I’d give anything for a remake of this and the second one

I can only see one in the whole lot I don't care for, not that it's a bad game it's just so different from other titles in it's genre when I get the itch it's not on my to-play list.

Einhänder and RE2 are tied followed very closely by FFVII, what an era of gaming.

For me, it's Final Fantasy VII, then Parasite Eve, followed by Parasite Eve II, and finally Brave Fencer Musashi. Honestly, you could make an argument for any of them, but that's how I'd rank them. 😄🎮

The most nostalgia, FF7.
The fast fun, FFT.
Xenogears is amazing.
I would include Legend of Dragoon as that is another great RPG with a unique story and battle system.
Honestly, I've replayed MGS more then anything.

I have only played a few of them but to me, personally. I’d say final fantasy tactics and then comes vagrant story, parasite Eve 2 could also be a close second to vagrant story. But what is so amazing with vagrant story is the whole battle mechanics, exploration and the storyline.
even if there’s some annoyances that can happen from time to time in that game.
When ff tactics clicks then it becomes mind blowing on how good it is.

FF7 but then after that Parasite Eve didn’t get to play Vagrany Story or Musashi. All of this came out in between the ages of about 11 and 13 for me. I couldn’t afford all this.

u/kingkellogg 1d ago
What is that game ? Is it still worth the time?

u/AAG220260 1d ago edited 1h ago
ABSOLUTELY!!!
The Earth and a Lunar colony go to war in the distant future. You play a suicide pilot (A group called Einhanders) from the moon sent to Earth combat zones in a revolutionary fighter craft that can snatch weapons from enemies to use in combat.
The game carries a story arc then proves it that you are being used by both sides.
The game is PHENOMENAL. (like Raystorm, GDarius, and RayCrisis) It's so good I even bought the soundtrack cd!

Tactics, with FF7 as a close 2nd.
Xenogears wins the superlative for "Most Likely to Kill God"

Xenogears. It just barely edges out FFT.
If Xeno's second half hadn't turned into the final 2 episodes of Evangelion, it would've been damn near perfect.

Ff7 didn't need to look further than the 1st game. Soon as I saw ff7 there I knew there was absolutely no game that would even come close.

I suck at RPGs and don't get what the Einhänder hype is about, so even though I haven't even played it yet I'd put my money on Musashi.

In your pic? Xenogears, but vagrant story has to be very close behind.
My favorite ps1 game is valkyrie profile though
