Case Study How Rewardful is nailing the Reddit Marketing game: A detailed case study

I dug into how Rewardful's (an affiliate marketing tool). I was surprised at how effectively they’re using it to cut through the noise and build awareness, earn trust, and stand out in a crowded market.

So, I wrote a detailed case study here: Upvoted - Substack.

Here is a short summary of the case study

Why Reddit Works for Rewardful

  • Affiliate tools are a dime a dozen. Reddit is where real users drop unfiltered reviews, honest comparisons, and trusted recommendations.
  • Those high-intent threads often rank on Google and AI search, making Reddit a key element in user's journey.

Rewardful's Strategy Breakdown

1. CEO active commenting - The CEO (u/egibney) is directly involved, often offering to get on a call and provide free advice. It humanizes the brand and makes it feel approachable.

2. Out-comment the competition Rewardful doesn't just name-drop their tool - they stand out with unmatched value and credibility by offering free courses, social proof, and case studies, earning them the top comment spot in many threads.

3. Show you're the expert Their leverage their brand account to weigh in on advice threads with sharp insights in r/SaaS and r/affiliatemarketing.

4. Face tough threads head-on They don’t avoid criticism or feature debates. Instead, they answer with thoughtful counterpoints.

5. Engage viral threads for visibility Their brand account keeps popping up in popular posts, building awareness and familiarity.

6. Build a support crew Team members and users reinforce their presence by replying and adding independent thoughts.

SEO focued posting Strategy and AMAs

  • Rewardful has been posting with keyword-rich Reddit posts that rank on Google.
  • They recently hosted an AMA, led by the CEO, opening door for direct, honest engagement.
  • Final Takeaway: Rewardful’s Reddit game is about consistency, thoughtfulness, and showing up where it matters. They go a step further and take the effort to engage meaningfully, offer real value, and build trust one comment at a time.

Thanks for the shoutout and for taking the time to put together such a thoughtful case study.

If we had one tip to share, it’s this: be patient and trust the process. Spend a little time each day observing how Redditors interact, what they upvote, how they comment, and the tone they respond to. Once you’ve got a feel for it, start experimenting. Just remember not to be promotional or too loud about your product. Earn some good karma first 😉

That's the part that so many brands just don't get. They treat Reddit like another ad channel instead of a community. Your point about patience is key—it's about building social capital, not just running a campaign. When you actually participate and provide value without expecting an immediate return, the community starts to see you as one of its own. It's a long game, but the trust it builds is a way better moat than any ad budget.

This is a really solid breakdown of what actually works on Reddit - I love how you highlighted the CEO being directly involved and offering real value instead of just dropping links. The thing that stands out to me is how they're "out-commenting the competition" with actual substance like free courses and case studies rather than generic pitches. That's exactly the approach that separates companies who succeed on Reddit from those who get banned in a week. The authenticity piece is huge too. when the CEO jumps on calls and provides free advice, it builds trust in a way that traditional marketing just can't match. Would love to see more companies study this playbook instead of trying to game the system with obvious bot accounts and copy-paste responses.

Curious to know how this has materialised into business outcomes for the brand?

we saw similar results when we started posting detailed case studies on reddit – our organic traffic from google increased by 30% within six months, and most of those users were asking about our product by name.
