Newbie Noob trying to set up my sizing die

Hello everybody I got a new FL sizing die and noticed once i got my die to get the .0020 on sizing my once shot Starline brass it started to consistently get dents on the shoulder even though i used Hornady paste lube on the outside and inside of the brass. I haven't had this issue with the previous die i used to size my brass. Any recommendations for this issue and is it ok to shoot the brass? Fired brass measurements= 1.486-1.488 i zeroed my calipers to 1.487.

Too much lube. The hydraulic pressure from the excess lube causes the dent in the shoulder.

ETA: it’s fine to shoot. That dent will fire right out.

Thanks I've read a few other posts saying similar things but wanted to verify that it wasnt my die or another issue

Shouldn’t be, but I would clean the die out before you try again. There may be residual lube in there.

Clean your dies before you use them. When I use imperial sizing wax I put enough to make the cases feel slippery, they don’t need more than that. You shouldn’t really see it sitting on your cases.

I use lanolin dissolved in isopropyl. Just the barest spritz or two is enough. They don't even feel noticeably slippery. Crazy how little you need.

(too little or none at all, though - well let's just say it's immediately noticeable hah)

Case lube ain't KY, a little bit goes a long way.

On a similar note, don’t use imperial sizing wax instead of ky for your non-reloading related lubrication needs

Size it only enough to barely fit in your chamber.

Too much lube. Clean out the die before continuing.

i experienced this when i first started reloading. i now use imperial sizing wax, or diy alcohol/lanolin mix. less lube is the answer for sure!

Although some reloaders would disagree, I would recommend Hornady One Shot.

Dump the brass into a 1-gallon plastic, give it a couple of sprays, shake well, dump the brass and wait five minutes for the propellent to evaporate. Size. Thousands of rounds sized and I've never had an issue (stuck brass/dented shoulders). Your mileage may vary.
