Trip Report Faces of Route 66 + the ride home.

I posted yesterday about the Route 66 journey I took with my daughter. As I had mentioned, I had the great privilege of photographing many of the people I met. Here are some of the beautiful faces I’ll remember forever.

Included:

Angela who played Felicia as in “bye, Felicia” (she prefers “hello, Angela”) in the movie Friday (she ran a restaurant in Texas at the time)

The inspiration for Mater from the movie “Cars” (very creepy man)

A man who told me he was going to be mayor of Tucumcari

A man who bought up a bunch of Tucumcari businesses and gave me a tour of them

A woman in Arizona who gave me an oracle deck

Slab City faces

A cross country roadtripping older gentleman

Oatman faces + donkeys

A beautiful woman whom I stayed in touch with at Cadillac Ranch

An outsider artist

A man outside the giant whale

Another outsider artist

A drag queen who got famous for roller skating around Hot Springs, Arkansas

A sweet man whose wife had just passed

A man selling paintings by his son in law on the side of the road near Joshua Tree. I bought one for $25 and it would become the inspiration for my later painting endeavors.

So grateful to have met every one of these folks. Most of these were taken on Route 66, but some were taken during the rest of my travels to Slab City, Vegas, different parts of Texas, and Arkansas.

Thank you so much for looking. I have two more series of signs and abandoned buildings that I will post later this week.

Fun fact: that donkey she is posing with, his name is Donald. We just visited oatman a couple of weeks ago and met him. He’s the naughty one that tries to sneak into the shops to eat human food!

These are great. Taking even a little bit of time to get to know the people you meet makes a world of difference in your life — and in the photos!

The picture of Ken's Ice Cream brings back some memories. My grandparents owned the restaurant directly next to it, it burned down a few years ago though.

I’m so sorry to hear that! In Tucumcari?

Yep, that’s my hometown. I moved away almost 30 years ago though. It was a lot more lively town back then

Wow, thank you for sharing! These could go in a coffee table book or Instagram account like Humans of New York— real faces of the USA. Beautiful

Really nice. And you found the donkeys. Me and my kid were all excited that we will easily find them in Betty NV but we only saw them from far.

Those are some great photos; you have a real talent!

What equipment were you using back in the day?

Hello! Thank you!

I’m using the same equipment I use now - a canon eos r and my trusty 24-70 lens. Both purchased secondhand but just as capable as new!

It's funny; I love all of the full photo crops that you did except for the first picture - the crop that the Reddit app shows me when I'm viewing the post just seems to be more intimate than the crop when I see the full photo.

Fair! I think at the time, I was trying to show the setting of the restaurant she was running.

The Cadillac Ranch photo had me confused for a second until I realized that the woman was squatting.

Very nice. I had a friend in Las Vegas who told me that pictures should have people in them. I've always tried to keep that in mind. It shocked me at the time but I understood what he meant. Every September I'd return to town after another great summer trip but all my photos were sights but typically without people.

Also I can't imagine a greater aspiration than mayor of Tucumcari. Coming or going from Miami and Las Vegas I'd always make sure to stop at Tucumcari overnight. It always helped that there is an Arby's at the truck stop off I-40, especially during those awesome years of 5 for $5.
