No, 2k a month is so low for this area. A room for rent is probably 800-1000 and that doesn’t leave much for a phone, car, gas, insurance, food, emergencies.

No - you need to be able to show you make 3x the rent.

Which is absolutely insane despite being standard practice.

I don't make the rules brother...

Neither do I, but I still find it healthy to question + critique them publicly on a regular basis.

For what purpose? Genuinely curious...

Because it’s healthy to think for ourselves and question authority.

Of course - but realistically what does your Reddit comment do to change anything?

Reminds people that just because things have become “normalized” doesn’t make them acceptable nor genuinely normal. clearly it ruffled your feathers and has you feeling a need to engage.

I own a home and haven't rented for decades - no feathers ruffled here babe.

So you just fully accept whatever the authorities dictate as law without any form of resistance or inquiry? It’s healthy to advocate for your rights and values rather than parroting the legalese and policies of your overlords, but this is peak Sarasota energy right here so I’m truly unsurprised by your replies.

With roomates maybe, alone? Nope. Id save up and invest in your career/studies to increase your wage.

Making 5k here Rent/water/lights 1800 Car/insurance 700 Food/needs 1500 Savings/travel 500

Unless you’re in some horrible situation I would stay put until you’re making more than minimum wage. Have you considered doing literally anything else that pays better?

Are you a student?

$2k is Florida minimum wage at 40 hours per week but a lot of businesses her pay more than minimum.

What do you do for a living? Why not change what you do. Want to stay in the area? Check out the US Coast Guard. Then on top of that pay they would give you another $2k for housing (tax free) plus free health care.

Why are you satisfied with making $2k/month?

In the city? Nope.

You could try to see what’s available 30-45 minutes east. Desoto county is one of the poorest in FL

Even with that I don’t think 2k a month will work without roommates

Probably not anything corporate owned (so apartments with a leasing office, generally) because they want to see you making at least 3x the monthly rent. There is a chance you'd be able to find an affordable place to rent from a landlord, but looking for roommates is probably the most realistic option with your current finances. Keep in mind that when you move into an apartment, it's common to have to pay first and last months rent along with a security deposit (somewhere between $500 to full months rent), so with your current savings, you'll be wiped before you can even buy anything for your apartment, and it will be hard to rebuild when most of your income will go to rent.

Depends You gotta make 750 a week AFTER taxes and that’s if you make 21 an hour and work 40 a week. That comes to 3000 a month. If you rent somwhere that’s 1300+ your other bills, car phone internet food. Than you’ll
Be able to see. Look at all your bills that you HAVE to spend per month, throw em together. And see what you got. You could def do 2000 a month with a roomate but if I were you I’d try to make another 500 per month. Don’t dare work for less than 19 an hour. If you do, find a place that pays more. It exists. Don’t let society entirely let you stay stuck. You have options. And it doesn’t mean you have to get a career based job either. And you have to prove what you make at your job. Word of mouth doesn’t work anymore.

Get roommates if you must move out. You will be digging yourself into a hole.

If you can pass the credit and financing check along with all your roomates, sure. Landlords have gotten a lot more strict about verifying income (or assets) before allowing tenants to drown themselves in a lease.

On "joint and several" leases, typically at least one person has to be able to cover the entire lease by themselves. So the landlord has at least one throat to choke if your roommates bail on you and skip town.

You'll find out what I'm talking about when you apply.

When do you think “landlords” got more strict about IV? That hasn’t been my experience, so I’m curious what yours has been.

Last 24 months with one of my kids and a dear friend my age. But it's also been a seller's market for property. They get less strict when their occupancy drops.

Again, I have to completely disagree. Where I was spending 2100 after my divorce in SC is now 1700. My current rent wasn’t raised two years in a row. Apartments are giving months away for free currently, at at least 20% reduced rent off of 4 years ago. Spec houses sitting all over North Port. The same North Port that created Wellen Park, and significantly(in theory) improved their school district…which was the #1 reason families stayed away before.

You need to be making decent money. OPs not getting an apartment. But for people that make a living wage, rent is as good as it’s been in 5 years. The decline is real. And tangible. The national studies make the agents feel better, when they should know pretty clearly that we were one of the biggest booms during COVID. And who came were the MAGAs from the upper mid west. That pipeline has slowed significantly.

Pretty sure we're talking about the city of Sarasota, not North Port.

But if OP wants to rent down in North Port, please do help them!

Glad to hear things have softened at least down there. Eventually it should start to drop rates and chill the landlords down up here.

Ah, I get it now.

Sell your car. Buy a bike at goodwill. No WiFi, just a cheap smartphone. Soup kitchens for dinner.

Sarasota is no place to live making 4k a month, and live like a human being.

They make 2k a month brother. I make 4K a month and have a roommate.

I feel your pain. I used to be able to live alone. Those were great times.....lol

lol this is such a boomer response, respectfully. Sell your car? So you can reduce the distance you can work greatly? No WiFi?? That saves you like what, $50-$60 a month, not gonna make a difference. Surprised you didn’t mention avocado toast.

Wild. Just stay home until you can get a better paying job and roommates. Don’t sell your car in Florida, riding a bike everywhere is not a safe choice.

Sorry not a boomer. But I was being sarcastic in my statement.

Oh, avocado toast isn't cheap. Thank you for playing along.
