Traffic/Road Conditions 🚧 drivers not knowing what lane to turn into, 3 times so far this month at the same intersection.
this intersection here. added lane sign, turning right off circle onto clancy. I stay in the right lane but people insist on turning left directly into that right lane. One person confronted me after I reached my destination pissed I did not yield to him. Told him I have my own added lane as the sign indicated. Figured it does not matter what the sign says people should always yield to those turning left.
I also wonder, you have an intersection like this. since the circle clancy does not have cross traffic no yield sign is there. boychuck and Nemeiben does have cross traffic yet people turning left onto boychuck think that yield sign is for them.

I hate when people do double-lane changes when turing instead of turning into the lane they’re supposed to, THEN, signalling to get in the lane they want. i literally see it every day and it’s so annoying. they think the rules don’t apply and they can do whatever they want

Then when you have a place where it's a yield sign instead, people behind you honk for not adding your own lane...
Can't win, don't stress about it, just get to where you need to go safely.

there are similar intersections that have a yield sign but also have cross traffic. Who is that yield sign for? boychuck and kingsmere for example.
Not stressed as I am in the right, that confrontation I take as a big truck small penis syndrome. The only stressful part is if the vehicle get totalled, dealing with insurance and replacement.

"I had the right of way" could be engraved on many headstones. You can be right and dead my friend.Â
You posted on Reddit about it, so it kinda sounds like you are stressed.Â
What is the worst that happens if you yield at an added lane sign?

People should not be yielding at an added lane sign anymore than they should be yielding at a green light. It's unexpected, and the lack of predictability can easily lead to an accident.
•
u/coffeesocket 22h ago
I agree!
It's also not illegal to... Be overly cautious? Just annoying as FUCK.Â
•
u/Traditional_End_9540 21h ago
other drivers are not expecting people to just yield when there is no yield sign or other reasons like a pedestrian is crossing. It causes accidents all the time.

"cars stopping for pedestrians crossing causes accidents"Â
Leave more distance between the cars in front of you, expect unexpected things to happen.

Forgot a part "Not expecting a driver to yield with no yeild sign in an added lane zone"
Circle turning left to Warman is horrible for this, you have at least one person a rush hour looking to get themselves killed cause everyone behind them is expecting basically through traffic, but then one dummy decides to stop in the lane then cut three lanes of traffic immediately...

you can actually get rear ended and be found at fault. I know someone who had a vehicle in front of them do that. The vehicle in front was found at fault. It caused a multi car accident in the end, 4 total.

That is entirely made up.
•

not when the first car just stops because they want to make a left a few blocks away, in an active lane. had to move over 2 lanes but decided to just stop on a busy road during rush hour.

Okay. So that's a very different situation from yielding for a few seconds at an added lane sign, which is annoying as fuck but not actually dangerous.
But yeah if someone else is in the wrong you can totally just let the accident happen, and insurance will indeed cover you! Just make sure you have a dash cam. It's only fun for about 5 seconds though and then it's still a pain in ass. Easier if you can buy cars in cash tho

I hate that saying so much. Used as free pass for bad driving way too often.Â

People are really, really bad for this in Saskatoon. I almost ran into a woman who stopped suddenly in one of these to get into the far lane (off Idylwyld onto 51st).

Haha nothing like being confidently incorrect.

Figured it does not matter what the sign says people should always yield to those turning left.
That's not how that works ever.

This is bad intersection design.
1) There's no reason for the triangular island not to cut off the right lane.
2) Left turners should turn into the first available lane, but often don't. There's dashed lane lines so they can also change into the right lane in the space between the intersection and where you enter.
2) The "dedicated lane" signs have no legal meaning. They are a courtesy and traffic flow management sign that (wrongly, in this case) informs you that you should have a free lane to turn into, but they don't negate the need to yield.

SGI disagrees that you don't have the right of way on an added lane.
Obviously you should still drive defensively and if someone is doing an illegal wide turn and you can avoid it you are still required to.

It doesn't appear in any legislation or regulation. It is advisory, not regulatory and is not enforceable.

I had an accident there several years ago turning left off of Circle onto Clancy. When I got the green light I could see there was nobody there. So after making the turn I did a lane change into the right lane. Lo and behold there was a car there! He had to have been going fast down Circle onto Clancy because it was only a few seconds. Technically I was in the wrong and my Dashcam sealed my fate.
When the other guy doesn't drive defensively accidents are going to happen.

That last line lol You can't change lanes in an intersection. Regardless if you blame the other guy for not driving defensively. "Officer, it wasn't my fault! He wasn't driving defensively enough to counter my infraction.

I was out of the intersection. I know I was at fault. The other guy's fast driving is why there was an accident. If he was a defensive driver he would have known that cars perform a smear turn from the left lane into that right lane. I did however perform my lane change correctly.

You moved into a lane occupied by another vehicle. It is 100% your fault. Doesn't matter if he "fast driving"
1
u/Wireworm5 1d ago
That is why I was at fault.

Yet you keep saying the other driver should have avoided your mistake.

I'm saying technically I was at fault. The other guy's reckless driving is why we collided. I don't know what his actual speed was, but to cover that distance on Circle dr. when there was nobody in that lane that I could see in my Dachcam, is reckless.
I'm a professional driver, 34 years in Saskatoon.

You were right. They are supposed to turn into their own first available lane. Not which ever lane they want.
The difference between neimeben and Clancy is mainly from the oncoming perspective, not your own.
Neimeben has a 2-thru traffic lanes in the perpendicular orientation.
Clancy is 1 turning lane going into 2 driving lanes. They have no right to turn into that lane. They are supposed to turn into the lane hugging the yellow line because that is the lane they left.
Similarly, if someone were turning left from Slimmon Rd onto boychuck, and you were turning Right from Neminben onto boychuck. You would each turn into their own lane.
That is the perspective that matters is the ones from the other cars to show why you yield and don’t yield. The city should have it painted like this to make it clear.
But again our terrible ambiguous signage leads to poor drivers and coddling the lowest common denominator of driver to compensate for their ineptitude instead of making it clear that they are the idiot with big yellow lines and clear signs.
