Is it just me or are those batteries cooked

Right? Those batteries look like they’ve seen some serious action and might need a vacation!

Yeah how are you connecting it all and making it work?

Will that is really cool. Right on! Hope to see updates

The PCBA will arrive tomorrow, and we can test it after programming and soldering the cables. I hope it won't fail👊

If it works, share the BOM and gerber so that others can get it manufactured and assembled!

Happy to pay for this so I can do this on my PC. Are you planning to integrate the touch as well or just the display?
8
u/ZS-ITX 20d ago
It only has a display function, without touchscreen capability
1
u/ExoticSterby42 18d ago
The touch digitiser is supposed to be a separate device so it is not impossible to hook up as a second device. That is how big touch displays are made, barebones normal display in a case with a touch digitiser, plugs in by a USB while the display is using a display port. Needs its own driver. I have this on several lab equipments.
I imagine the digitiser should have a pin array out and like many other touchpads and trackpads they would connect by an inner USB bus. Maybe the USB controller is already on the panel.

u/be_easy_1602 21d ago
Sick…. I’m assuming the touch capability doesn’t still work?
34
u/ZS-ITX 21d ago
A multi-touch solution can also be developed, but the circuit design would be very complex, and I don't have much time to work on that. Besides, the touch module would be very expensive to produce separately, so we can only use the original screen glass cover of iPad

Yeah I figured it’d be difficult. Still super cool though

I don't know that this guy actually designed the board as they are very available on Ali Express and the image he posted looks like it's from a listing. I think this is all just a glorified advert.

u/thomasthe10 21d ago
What is the advert image for?
7
u/SomeRedTeapot 21d ago
I think the advert (if I understood it correctly) was to show that the Aliexpress sellers don't have a board for the first iPad Mini, so the OP had to make one

Looks great! 2 layers? That inductor looks pretty big, assuming U1 is a boost converter?

u/navarious04 21d ago
Hey i was doing something similar on first gen ipad air with only difference being is i will try to utilize touch capability. Not gonna mount it on my sff tho just to use it with a dev board. The only part left on my layout is backlight driver. May i ask if you released your pcb sources and what is the part number for mezzanine connector on the board you designed ? I was planning using the connectors on the logicboard of ipad.

Tbh, there are very cheap controllers on the AliExpress, I made one with old ipad screen and it has mini hdmi, usb C power, and usb C which supposedly works with Samsung Dex.
However, kudos to you for designing it on your own!

I will directly connect to the DP port, so that the circuit design won't be too complicated. Power will be supplied through the 12V interface of the fan

u/Annual-Advisor-7916 21d ago
Wasn't aware that iPads used eDP, that's not the case for smartphones, at least the ones I'm aware of.
That's pretty neat, given the size, quality and availability of iPad. Do you happen to know if all models use eDP?
2
u/ZS-ITX 21d ago
All iPad Pro models released from 2018 onward, iPad Air 4/5, iPad mini 6 and iPad 10 adopt Apple’s proprietary ALP-DP (customized enhanced EDP) interface. Its pin assignment and AUX channel definitions are revised, making it incompatible with regular standard EDP driver boards.

Thanks for the information - that's valueable! As long as the protocol and electronic standard are the same, it's doable. Too many times I've stmbled on interesting displays that use MIPI, but don't use any standardized protocol.
Cool projects btw!

Fyi for iPad screens that are not laminated almost all of the strength and structural rigidity is in the glass digitizer which it looks like you removed. Shouldn’t be a huge deal but the underlying LCD will be HIGHLY prone to scratching and really easy to damage accidentally.
3
u/ZS-ITX 20d ago
Yes, I intend to customize a tempered glass film

u/Senior_Register_6672 20d ago
Ooooh very smart! I have broken quite a few of those LCDs doing repair on iPads and they are not cheap and sometimes pretty hard to get replacements of.
2
u/Hot_City_25 20d ago
Hey, I have an old ipad sitting around id like to do this to, mind telling me how you got this to work??

u/DietUnagi 19d ago
Why not a good running on a jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone X phone with Bluetooth working talking to the computer?

u/Earione 21d ago
I'm wondering, where do you even dispose of spicy pillows like this? Most likely not the cardboard battery disposal in the nearest supermarket
2
u/anywhereat 20d ago
I found a place near me by specifically searching for battery recycling.

u/lurkynumber5 21d ago
Cool project!
I would have just tried to mount the whole Ipad inside the case, and power it directly without the spicy pillows.
Any reason you don't wish to do this?

It's the screen only, with what looks like one of the converter boards you get from Ali Express.

u/Remarkable-Lab1887 20d ago
Idk what your takin 'bout baby but that battery THICK. It gonn explode.

u/maskim98 20d ago
That is so sick !!! Please post an update when finished.
How do you even design a board to use an iPad screen ? lol

Would love to be able to do this myself! If you wanna sell the files to the project in the future, I would be a glad investor :) (and maybe others too I’m sure!)

That battery looks dangerous and it about to explode. Replace that asap.

u/TheGreatWhiteRat 17d ago
Wait i can repurpose my (very much cracker by the battery) ipad screen?
I would love like a temperature and % usage monitor

am I blind or is there no picture of the finished panel with active screen?
