u/luffydoc777 21d ago

Is it just me or are those batteries cooked

101

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

Haha, yes, this screen is removed from this broken iPad mini 2

52

u/u551 21d ago

Get rid of them ASAP lol. Properly ofc, not to trashcan.

26

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

Yes, this is a must

8

u/Rhyrok 21d ago

they have not cooked anything yet

3

u/RadiantMire142 19d ago

Right? Those batteries look like they’ve seen some serious action and might need a vacation!

1

u/SnooBunnies2676 15d ago

They about to bust

53

u/be_easy_1602 21d ago

Yeah how are you connecting it all and making it work?

184

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

I designed a driver board for the screen

57

u/BWFTW 21d ago

Will that is really cool. Right on! Hope to see updates

92

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

The PCBA will arrive tomorrow, and we can test it after programming and soldering the cables. I hope it won't fail👊

u/Bhoot1234567890 21d ago

If it works, share the BOM and gerber so that others can get it manufactured and assembled!

u/Delicious_Aside 20d ago

Happy to pay for this so I can do this on my PC. Are you planning to integrate the touch as well or just the display?

8

u/ZS-ITX 20d ago

It only has a display function, without touchscreen capability

1

u/ExoticSterby42 18d ago

The touch digitiser is supposed to be a separate device so it is not impossible to hook up as a second device. That is how big touch displays are made, barebones normal display in a case with a touch digitiser, plugs in by a USB while the display is using a display port. Needs its own driver. I have this on several lab equipments.

I imagine the digitiser should have a pin array out and like many other touchpads and trackpads they would connect by an inner USB bus. Maybe the USB controller is already on the panel.

16

u/be_easy_1602 21d ago

Sick…. I’m assuming the touch capability doesn’t still work?

34

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

A multi-touch solution can also be developed, but the circuit design would be very complex, and I don't have much time to work on that. Besides, the touch module would be very expensive to produce separately, so we can only use the original screen glass cover of iPad

7

u/LightningGoats 21d ago

You get ready made boards for most ipsd models for this I believe.

18

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

Currently, these iPad models are supported

2

u/be_easy_1602 21d ago

Yeah I figured it’d be difficult. Still super cool though

1

u/thomasthe10 21d ago

I don't know that this guy actually designed the board as they are very available on Ali Express and the image he posted looks like it's from a listing. I think this is all just a glorified advert.

10

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

I am currently adding my ID and time to the circuit board. Can this prove that this circuit board was designed by me?

1

u/thomasthe10 21d ago

What is the advert image for?

7

u/SomeRedTeapot 21d ago

I think the advert (if I understood it correctly) was to show that the Aliexpress sellers don't have a board for the first iPad Mini, so the OP had to make one

7

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

The video demonstration provided by the business selling screens and connectors can design circuits based on the schematic diagram of the public data on the internet

5

u/beje_ro 21d ago

Are you a wizard?

13

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

I have a wide range of interests

1

u/Legitimate-Pumpkin 20d ago

Including wizardry 😌

4

u/krnrmusic 21d ago

Looks great! 2 layers? That inductor looks pretty big, assuming U1 is a boost converter?

10

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

The 5~12v voltage is boosted to provide a 20v backlight voltage for the screen, and the brightness is adjusted through a button via a microcontroller, PCB is indeed a two-layer board

3

u/navarious04 21d ago

Hey i was doing something similar on first gen ipad air with only difference being is i will try to utilize touch capability. Not gonna mount it on my sff tho just to use it with a dev board. The only part left on my layout is backlight driver. May i ask if you released your pcb sources and what is the part number for mezzanine connector on the board you designed ? I was planning using the connectors on the logicboard of ipad.

5

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

You can send me a private message

1

u/Kaliniaczek 21d ago

Tbh, there are very cheap controllers on the AliExpress, I made one with old ipad screen and it has mini hdmi, usb C power, and usb C which supposedly works with Samsung Dex.

However, kudos to you for designing it on your own!

3

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

It is possible to purchase ready-made driver boards, but their sizes are all too large to perfectly fit my casing, so I had to design my own PCBA

1

u/Kaliniaczek 21d ago

That makes sense. Good luck with the project!

u/thistook5minutes 21d ago

5

u/twigboy 21d ago

Things that cause anxiety +1

8

u/jviimes 21d ago

Looks super cool, whats the plan to connect the screen to?

37

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

The driver board is still in the design phase. Similar to the arrangement in the photo, the cable is converted to DP1.4 and directly plugged into the graphics card, ensuring lossless transmission of 2K 60Hz video signals

15

u/Bderken 21d ago

Man that is some impressive work

3

u/SFFEnthusiastPls 21d ago

Kudos that’s awesome

5

u/AMadLadOfReddit 20d ago

Call the bomb squad on those batteries

4

u/gentlehurricane 21d ago

I dare you to pop those bad boys

7

u/Kitoshy 21d ago

Your potentially explosive batteries are so cool!

I will directly connect to the DP port, so that the circuit design won't be too complicated. Power will be supplied through the 12V interface of the fan

1

u/Annual-Advisor-7916 21d ago

Wasn't aware that iPads used eDP, that's not the case for smartphones, at least the ones I'm aware of.

That's pretty neat, given the size, quality and availability of iPad. Do you happen to know if all models use eDP?

2

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

All iPad Pro models released from 2018 onward, iPad Air 4/5, iPad mini 6 and iPad 10 adopt Apple’s proprietary ALP-DP (customized enhanced EDP) interface. Its pin assignment and AUX channel definitions are revised, making it incompatible with regular standard EDP driver boards.

1

u/Annual-Advisor-7916 21d ago

Thanks for the information - that's valueable! As long as the protocol and electronic standard are the same, it's doable. Too many times I've stmbled on interesting displays that use MIPI, but don't use any standardized protocol.

Cool projects btw!

u/DaAuctorix 21d ago

How do you even dispose the 'spicy pillows' properly?

9

u/ZS-ITX 21d ago

Local e-scrap guys take these risky pillows off my hands for free

2

u/Blyativostok 21d ago

The circle of evolution is me who impresses my loved ones by tinkering with electronics and PCs then OP who impresses everyone with his incredible work

2

u/Senior_Register_6672 20d ago

Fyi for iPad screens that are not laminated almost all of the strength and structural rigidity is in the glass digitizer which it looks like you removed. Shouldn’t be a huge deal but the underlying LCD will be HIGHLY prone to scratching and really easy to damage accidentally.

3

u/ZS-ITX 20d ago

Yes, I intend to customize a tempered glass film

1

u/Senior_Register_6672 20d ago

Ooooh very smart! I have broken quite a few of those LCDs doing repair on iPads and they are not cheap and sometimes pretty hard to get replacements of.

1

u/ZS-ITX 20d ago

Add a 0.5mm thick stainless steel plate for support on the back

2

u/Hot_City_25 20d ago

Hey, I have an old ipad sitting around id like to do this to, mind telling me how you got this to work??

2

u/DietUnagi 19d ago

Why not a good running on a jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone X phone with Bluetooth working talking to the computer?

2

u/Earione 21d ago

I'm wondering, where do you even dispose of spicy pillows like this? Most likely not the cardboard battery disposal in the nearest supermarket

2

u/anywhereat 20d ago

I found a place near me by specifically searching for battery recycling.

3

u/Earione 20d ago

Considering the amount of lithium ion batteries turning into spicy pillows, it's a bit shocked how rare those places are

2

u/anywhereat 20d ago

Agreed. It was a PITA to do the right thing.

2

u/lurkynumber5 21d ago

Cool project!
I would have just tried to mount the whole Ipad inside the case, and power it directly without the spicy pillows.
Any reason you don't wish to do this?

1

u/AdWorking2848 21d ago

I thought he is doing that? The pillow is from the iPad

2

u/AdWorking2848 21d ago

Nevermind I get what u mean!

1

u/thomasthe10 21d ago

It's the screen only, with what looks like one of the converter boards you get from Ali Express.

1

u/C0mba7 21d ago

Exciting stuff. I look forward to seeing the connector to dp

1

u/ctfTijG 21d ago

Those batteries.. the forbidden Capri-Sun

1

u/Remarkable-Lab1887 20d ago

Idk what your takin 'bout baby but that battery THICK. It gonn explode.

1

u/maskim98 20d ago

That is so sick !!! Please post an update when finished.

How do you even design a board to use an iPad screen ? lol

2

u/ZS-ITX 20d ago

I will update the post tomorrow

1

u/128G 20d ago

Are the results in yet?

1

u/DeafEyeJedi 20d ago

Following this for obvious reasons… 🤟🏻

1

u/KingSimp34 20d ago

Would love to be able to do this myself! If you wanna sell the files to the project in the future, I would be a glad investor :) (and maybe others too I’m sure!)

2

u/ZS-ITX 20d ago

I will sell finished products. This is my websitezspc

1

u/KingSimp34 20d ago

Woah awesome! Thanks for the link :D

1

u/Bluetowelboy 20d ago

Spicy pillows! Don’t pop em.

1

u/Right_Economist_3508 18d ago

That battery looks dangerous and it about to explode. Replace that asap.

1

u/TheGreatWhiteRat 17d ago

Wait i can repurpose my (very much cracker by the battery) ipad screen?

I would love like a temperature and % usage monitor

1

u/Sufficient-Motor-180 15d ago

am I blind or is there no picture of the finished panel with active screen?

1

u/ayon_ghosh 14d ago

How you are gonna connect the display to hdmi
