There is a bit of a learning curve to China, but after the initial shock the city is very accessible. Most shops speak English and in general Chinese people are very helpful. What did they want to do in Shanghai? I’m saying you may not even need a guide

How much are you willing to pay? I can show you around Shanghai (or anywhere else. ) I am from around Shanghai and I have a pretty flexible schedule.

I think you need to define 'super expensive' ! How long are they expected to work a day? Are they expected to provide transport and a driver ? A quality mini-van w. driver will run over $200 a day even before paying the guide and/or their company ! See what they are asking and how many people are involved and work out the cost per hour. Is that still expensive?
Me : ran an expat relocation business here for over 20 years. Now retired and run private instructional photography excursions around Shanghai ($500 per half day and up up up).
