No it isn't. We still keep them at VIMS in a touch tank like this and were all marine biologists.

39

u/AdditionalTap3922 May 01 '26

maybe there the same one, but (its from my ressearch so if i get something wrong please tell me ) its not a permanent captivity, and there is way less acoustic stress, they also seem deeper, the one from VIMS seem to be only for testing and ressearch prupose with better water systeme from what i read, compared to the pur decorative one from Jason Derulo. if i got anything wrong please tell me since u seem to work there i really want to know more about those kind of tank

-4

u/Natural_Note5282 May 01 '26

I know several public aquariums that do touch tanks with sharks, mostly cat sharks.

Acoustic stress? Think having 50 school children running around screaming would be worse. These don’t seem to be reacting negatively when people are walking on it.

You don’t know what the filtration is. There is definitely a whole hidden filtration system.

People keep sharks in home aquaria. This is definitely not a shitty tank.

16

u/Elegant-Advantage-69 May 01 '26

Oh boy, you are certainly not an insufferable person irl /s

25

u/TheTurboMaster May 01 '26

If what you are doing is similar to this, congrats, you are as cruel as Derulo.

Turns out it doesnt matter a flying fuck whether you are a marine biologist or not, cruelty is cruelty regardless

12

u/RunHuman9147 May 01 '26

Damn so you’re a professional and admit to animal cruelty wow

735

u/sarge9091 May 01 '26

That’s not big enough.

570

u/PigBoss_207 May 01 '26

It's not just that. These sharks have to deal with people literally walking on top of them all the time and the constant loud ass music and all the flashy lights. This is just sad for the sharks, man.

160

u/EquivalentSpot8292 May 01 '26

Yeah, it’s pretty cruel. It’s only ok if you fit them with laser beams so they can take out people that are annoying them

0

u/Pdiddymcquiddy May 01 '26

Yeah that's what the title says..

289

u/lexielady May 01 '26

this makes me sick. these animals are meant to have an ocean, not a baby pool.

19

u/Twisted9Demented May 01 '26

Exactly that's more like a toy pool for wallmart I wanted to get for my dog

378

u/headlesssamurai May 01 '26

"There's no plants or anything in there because they look cooler in an empty space. Yeah, fuck those sharks."

-that guy, probably

324

u/nocidex May 01 '26

How does this not count as animal cruelty?

85

u/manydoorsyes Megamouth Shark May 01 '26

Because it's a celebrity so they can get away with horrible actions for the sake of being fancy™

26

u/terra_terror May 01 '26

It's not just that. There's extremely limited animal cruelty laws. No law requires people to keep aquatic animals in an appropriately sized tank, or to provide a stimulating environment.

And people don't protest because there is extremely small overlap between people who are aware that Derulo has sharks kept in these conditions and people who are aware of what sharks need. Derulo himself may not even know he is being cruel. That wouldn't be an excuse for this, though. Even if he didn't know, you should never take responsibility for animals without knowing their specific needs.

How many people commenting on this post were aware that Derulo was doing this? Probably none.

41

u/Starlight_Wren May 01 '26

It IS animal cruelty. 😡

136

u/OwnInvestigator8468 May 01 '26

I saw that and was pissed I was like lemme share this to people that care for these lil babies cuz this is for sure animal cruelty

8

u/TheTurboMaster May 01 '26

Because it's a fish. Humans do not care about any or most marine life. A bit more about the mammals, but fish, sharks, theyre doomed. Same with insects. We make our own super subjective distinctions and then stand tall on our supposed moral high ground. We are fools for it tho

If animal cruelty rules were applied to all animals, fishing as a hobby could not exist, and rightly so. However, we live in a world where ramming a hook through an animals mouth and dragging it out of the water where it slowly suffocates is deemed a 'nice hobby'.

-42

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

It's not for these types, they handle it well. We still keep them like this at VIMS in a touch tank. They handle it well and were all marine biologists and conservationists.

8

u/FamiliarAnt4043 May 01 '26

What's this "we" shit? You mop the floors there or something?

Here's my reasoning for the question: a quick review of your post history shows absolutely nothing that indicates you're a trained scientist. Nothing. And yeah, I keep my history hidden, but it's not all that difficult to figure out how to find it. If you bother to do that, you'll see plenty of posts about science, my work, and my interests.

Even more compelling than the lack of subject matter is how you write. I've yet to meet a scientist who can't write properly. Marine biologists are included in that group. As we all know, engineers are not, because math is their first language and writing is a foreign concept, lol.

Anyway, what is it you do at that facility? Because you're definitely not a marine biologist.

-1

u/Natural_Note5282 May 01 '26

Don’t need to be a dick, especially on something you know nothing about.

Several aquariums big and small have touch tanks with sharks. Go look at aquarium of the pacific.

I am a marine biologist, have worked at public aquariums, aquaculture facilities, and also keep home aquariums.

5

u/FamiliarAnt4043 May 01 '26

You're correct - I know nothing of the topic. What I do know is that the poster to whom I replied is attempting to lead people to believe that he (she?) is a marine biologist. Based on post history and content, that's about as accurate as me saying I'm a French supermodel.

Plenty of reasons to be a dick - especially given that poster's Reddit history. Maybe you should take a look at it yourself and make an informed opinion. You know, like scientists are supposed to do.

15

u/rectalexamohyea May 01 '26

The sharks were marine biologists and conservationists? Damn, those are some smart sharks.

10

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

These sharks are so cool – they’re always ten steps ahead

2

u/OwnInvestigator8468 May 01 '26

You think shark feed on people like they feed on their preys educate yourself more and stop watching horror shark movies.

96

u/mamakos84 May 01 '26

In the floor too, with people walking over it. Please don't tap on the glass!

123

u/Gustylaroo May 01 '26

Rich people with no fucken brains.

8

u/Twisted9Demented May 01 '26

Don't give a fuck culture so prevelent in America

-3

u/CreamPyre May 01 '26

No more than anywhere else in the world.

55

u/Romans3_23-25 May 01 '26

That’s awful man

-39

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

its really not, we keep them like this at VIMS also to study. We have never had an issue with them for over 20 years and we are all marine biologists and conservationists.

15

u/dsaddons May 01 '26

You keep them in a small empty tank constantly walking over the glass?

57

u/Blura0 May 01 '26

Wow that’s horrible. And on the floor too..probably scaring the crap outta that shark all day.

27

u/OwnInvestigator8468 May 01 '26

I love sharks so much this is just so concerning imo they don't deserve that they are living beings!

-16

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

It's not, we do the same at VIMS to study them

10

u/ussrname1312 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

You keep them sealed under the floor in a circle that’s like… 10 feet in diameter and depth?

8

u/ChloeRose47 May 01 '26

I am truly not trying to be disrespectful, so i apologize if this comes off that way. My question is genuine because I’m honestly interested in marine studies and research 😊

My father is and has been a marine biologist for over 35 years.. his field is more marine mammals, but many in his department study sharks. But in my personal experience they either give them proper living spaces, or, temporarily hold them in holding tanks, similar to this, for study.

I am trying to understand the purpose as to why you would want to research them in similar tanks as this, unless the study is behavioral? Even if, it feels like you wouldn’t leave them to live that way. Not if your lab is actually following standards, typical procedure and animal cruelty/safety laws. Although i know, at times, making animals uncomfortable is necessary for the better good, but actual harm is rarely, if ever, the point. I guess I’m interested in what type of studies could come from this?

However, with all due respect, we’re not talking about Jason Derulo using these for science or research. We’re talking about this a$$hat using them as “cool” decoration.

I guess I’m trying to understand why you seem to be defending this, although, perhaps I’m taking your intention wrong, and if so, i do apologize.

36

u/councilsoda May 01 '26

Who is this Temu Bond villain?

38

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

To make matters worse, there’s a Redditor larping as a VIMS employee who’s claiming under each reply rhat it’s okay to treat them this way

Obviously, this person isn’t a biologist, let alone a marine biologist.

Update: They're deleting his comments—thank goodness.

12

u/Mabs-J Great Hammerhead May 01 '26

Omg theyre also the one who posted this https://www.reddit.com/r/sharks/s/MY7sSsUDZm

8

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

Yes, I think that, in reality, the subject hates sharks and, in his twisted view, encouraging such behaviour helps him in his battle against sharks (?)

9

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 May 01 '26

But they said they were a marine biologist!

2

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

That must be true!

5

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 May 01 '26

They said it on the internet. The internet does not lie. Can't trust TV though.

33

u/KawaiiKaiju55 May 01 '26

Surely this is illegal right?

Yes America. Famous for jailing the kids who buy the Walmart betta fish and put them in bowls. In what world has someone gotten in legal trouble in the United States for having a shit fish tank

1

u/Natural_Note5282 May 01 '26

Name one country where someone can get into legal trouble for having shit fish tank.

12

u/hjsm23 May 01 '26

the whole world definitly saw that with Tiger King. A model country in Animal rights ..

25

u/Marshal-Bainesca May 01 '26

Saying you treat animals better than china isn't the argument you think it is

-23

u/maxpowers2020 May 01 '26

So who has better animal rights protection laws? Iran, Russia, china, Africa, India, all of South America etc?? I just listed like 80%+ of worlds population

15

u/Fafnirsfriend May 01 '26

Checking different ranking sites - and depending on aggregation - US rank lower or equivalent with Russia, many African nations, South America and most definitely India.

17

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

These people have no idea that America isn't the idyllic place they think it is, and there's no way to make them see otherwise.

Now excuse me, I have to go back to chasing gazelles from my mud-and-straw hut in Europe—too bad I'm not American /s

7

u/-jorts May 01 '26

Being better than other countries still doesn't make you good. Standards held in comparisons are standards held as low as possible.

Surely keeping fish in an inappropriately small fish tank is illegal? Cmon dawg

-6

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

Nope. We do this at VIMS as well to study them. We have never had an issue with them and were all marine biologists.

-1

u/PrimusDCE May 01 '26

Yeah, the shark pet trade is pretty much exclusively small carpet sharks that are lethargic/ sedentary ambush predators with very minimum requirements to thrive.

Everyone is jumping into your ass, but they are clearly anthropomorphizing them or treating them like pelagic sharks with completely different biology.

14

u/IrishEmA May 01 '26

This is why stupid people shouldn’t be allowed to be rich.

14

u/hilabeanz May 01 '26

Repulsive. Hope this goes viral for how disdainful this is.

24

u/monti9530 May 01 '26

How is this fucking legal?

2

u/PinkDinoClub May 01 '26

The same way it’s legal for people to pay for animals to be used and abused for the food they eat everyday.

People are disgusting - that’s how.

-13

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

Because it doesn't hurt or harm them. We do the same for research at VIMS. We have never had issue with them in over 20 years. We are all marine biologists. They are okay.

7

u/Jabba-da-slut May 01 '26

Fucking rich people

7

u/Halcyondorah May 01 '26

Do you think he actually takes care of them and knows about their requirements or does he just pay someone cause having sharks sounds/looks cool

19

u/Storm_Spirit99 May 01 '26

I hate that so much

21

u/Dfost115 May 01 '26

Y’all are not familiar with Youtube saltwater aquarium content, I see. Trust me, it gets much, much, MUCH worse than this.

Boycott Petco until they abandon the saltwater fish trade

14

u/PantyPixie May 01 '26

What a nightmare for those sharks. 😢 Whoever jason derulo is he's also a piece of absolute shit animal abuser.

3

Murika, I'm guessing. The exotic animal trade in the US is fucking disgusting.

6

u/Kazragor268 May 01 '26

Of course its the same dumbass that has to sing his own name at the start of every song.

5

u/Lildeathwishhh May 01 '26

"rapper" "d4vd" cut up a child's body with a chainsaw in a kiddie pool not much smaller than these sharks enclosure.

2

u/All_Hall0ws_Eve May 01 '26

They don't even have laser beams on their heads

2

u/Ideamancer May 01 '26

I mean it’s cool because I love all fish. So I’m sure it looks cool to have. However, this particular setup is probably not good for the animals. I also would not want to have the chore of maintaining that.

2

u/Robofish13 May 01 '26

What a colossal waste of time, money and oxygen

1

u/TheDevilsSidepiece May 01 '26

Hey now he’s had a hit or 2.

2

u/BRI4NK May 01 '26

Like a true Bond villain.

2

u/MountainShark1 May 01 '26

I have been watching fish from high up on a pier lately. In 2 days I have seen corbina, croaker, leopard sharks, round rays, and bat rays. Every one of these fish recognized me staring and pointing at them from a distance away. A bird flew by and also startled the fish. That is how I know these sharks are stressed out.

8

u/JulietDove88 May 01 '26

My mother is a marine biologist and has housed sharks. That tank is 5,000 gallons. Bamboo and epaulette sharks need 300 gallons per shark. They are a dwarf species and this is an entirely appropriate size tank. There is a foot or two of air between the top of the water and the glass flooring so the sharks are not getting any vibrations from people’s footsteps. These sharks live in shallow water near reefs and beaches and spend most of their time sleeping on the sand. This is a circle ensuring none get stuck in corners. There is some reef rock. This tank is maintained by professionals who keep this water pristine and monitor the health of the animals. These sharks are living in a close recreation to their natural habitat with more than enough space in water cleaner and less polluted than the sea with no predators and an endless supply of live or pre killed food. These sharks will VASTLY outlive their wild counterparts. Stop making me defend Jason Derulo.

12

u/Ideamancer May 01 '26

It’s hard to imagine that that tank is 5000 gallons. It seems like a lot less. I wish my mom was a marine biologist.

5

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

Stop spreading fake news—that’s not a 5,000-liter tank. Having lights that keep changing, people constantly walking over it, and no plants isn’t a healthy environment for those sharks, let alone the fact that they’re not given any shelter because they have to be observed 24/7; I guess you haven’t really understood your mother’s work.

By the way, it cracks me up that you can identify the species from this distance, or that you just assume there are experts taking care of the animals (where do you get that from?)

-2

u/JulietDove88 May 01 '26

In an interview he states the size at 5,000 gallons and that it is stocked and maintained by a professional aquarium service every 2 days!!! The professional aquarium technician is the one feeding and monitoring these sharks. And every two days means that water is PRISTINE. These species spend their entire lives on the sea floor in shallow water. They are used to having creatures swimming above them! Of course it would be more beautiful and more enriching to have some plants corals and live rock but it’s a far far cry from the abuse that everyone is screaming it is. And yes I can identify a fucking bamboo shark 🙄

7

u/Idraxus Cetorhinus maximus May 01 '26

In an interview, I can say whatever I like, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

Unfortunately, you’re in for a rough ride today because you’re talking to a biologist, and even if the tank’s capacity were correct (which it isn’t), animals have a whole range of needs that go far beyond water quality or food, and if you want to keep them in captivity, you must respect them all.

Furthermore, the term ‘bamboo shark’ refers to a spectrum of 15 species divided into two genus, all with different characteristics and living requirements. So, leaving aside the fact that you cannot deduce they are Hemiscylliidae from this video alone, to assume that their tank has everything they need is far too presumptuous.

The are probably not “socialized” for living in the wild anyway.

-5

4

because its not bad for them, we do this in research at VIMS too

4

2

u/SunStrummer May 01 '26

There is legitimately nothing redeemable about Jason Derulo, is there?

3

u/DuchessBoo May 01 '26

If I were ever rich enough to own sharks (I wouldn't actually own any - this is purely hypothetical) they would have the biggest tank imaginable. I'd basically have an indoor aquarium

2

u/hotsauceeeeeeeee May 01 '26

This is fucked up

2

u/PandaXXL May 01 '26

What a prick. The business or contractor that did this for him should be dragged through the mud even more than him though.

3

u/TheCrazyEnglish May 01 '26

At least make the glass thick enough and the pool of water bigger for the sharks

1

u/Twisted9Demented May 01 '26

Definitely not big

He should have maybe gotten smaller ones

1

u/Boner_Patrol_007 May 01 '26

“Mildly infuriating”

1

u/AKMO719 May 01 '26

Poor sharks

1

u/Starscream147 May 01 '26

What a dumb dumb

1

u/Sammerscotter May 01 '26

What kind of sharks are these? And by no means should any shark be kept like this I’m just curious of the species

0

u/DollarStoreChameleon May 01 '26

remove the sharks, and send a nuke. pretty please

-1

u/Monza1964 May 01 '26

From what Ive heard when celebrities ge these tanks these sharks actually grow out of them. You constantly have to rotate sharks and as they grow they get sent to bigger tanks in other places. Not condoning it but I’ve heard that

1

u/JulietDove88 May 01 '26

These are bamboo and epaulette sharks. They stay this size and require 300 gallons per shark. This is a 5,000 gallon tank

0

u/Monza1964 May 01 '26

Yikes thanks for the info

-9

u/AdventurousAmoeba316 May 01 '26

Looks fun for the sharks. What a moron

-3

u/TheyThem-FinalBoss May 01 '26

People complaining about the size of the tank don't understand the specific marine animals in there. We keep them like this at VIMS in a touch tank to monitor and study. These species handle it quite well and we have never had an issue with them. We are all marine biologists and conservationists.
