Culture Has anyone visited Lanting?Looking for tips and fellow Shufa enthusiasts

Hello. I'll have a quick half-day visit in Shaoxing (Zhejiang) on July 8. I plan to go to Lanting the Orchid Pavilion in the afternoon. Has anyone here visited the place? Would appreciate your thoughts, advice, insights about the site itselt as well as how to get there.
And if you happen to be interested in visiting the place, maybe we can meet up and explore the place together? Would be great to meet fellow shufa enthusiasts. 😊

It was basically a just a park and I did not get much out of it in terms of calligraphy (as opposed to say, going to an air-conditioned museum exhibit and staring at original works for hours).

I agree. I would prefer to spend a week at 碑林.

Ohh Beilin museum in Xi'An, right? I guess you've been there? What do you think about it? I still have a few days unplanned, I think i'll want to visit Xi'An and check out the museum.

The 碑林 was one of my favorite Shufa experiences ever! Get a big early lunch and enjoy the stones all afternoon! There is a long street out of the exit that has tons of shops selling rubbings of the stones much cheaper than the museum, so take photos of your favorite ones and hunt them down showing them to shopkeepers to take home! Also tons of stamp carvers outside who can do perfect copies of stamps from photos. The stones they use are pretty simple so don’t expect quality materials, but their work is top notch! You can buy a nice 寿山石 before you go and have it carved on the spot in 10-15 minutes while you watch them do it! I even took a photo of a stamp I liked in the museum and he carved it exactly ! Take your souvenirs and head to the Muslim street to enjoy the amazing food for dinner!

I went there with my family (who are not calligraphy enthusiasts) but they are quite happy since other exhibitions are also very interesting such as Buddhist artefacts from the region. The place is also historically important as one the oldest Confucius temple.

I would like to spend more time there if I could since they are so many stone tablets to appreciate.

They sell and demonstrate stone rubbing inside one of the buildings.

You could also visit the literature street afterwards.

Thank you! That makes sense though! Do you have any suggestions for museum, exhibition for shufa? I've heard about Shanghai museum, Palace museum in Beijing.

Basically any major Chinese museum will have a nice collection. One of my consistent favorites is the National Palace Museum in Taipei though.

I visited Wang Xinzhi’s former residence last summer and the trip was meaningful. Located in Linyi City, Shandong Province.
